Interspecies human x mouse cell hybrids were used to investigate the genetic basis of human permissivity to HTLV-IIIB infection. T cell hybrids between the mouse BW 51.47 T lymphoma line and normal, PHA-IL-2 activated, human peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were generated. These hybrids preferentially segregated human chromosomes, as assessed by phenotype and karyotype analysis. Viral integration occurred only in those hybrids expressing CD4+ at the cell surface. However, infectious progeny production was demonstrated only in two of the three CD4+ hybrids tested. By segregation analysis, w

Plant immunity frequently incurs growth penalties, which known as the trade-off between immunity and growth. Heterosis, the phenotypic superiority of a hybrid over its parents, has been demonstrated for many traits but rarely for disease resistance. Here, we report that the central circadian oscillator, CCA1, confers heterosis for bacterial defense in hybrids without growth vigor costs, and it even significantly enhances the growth heterosis of hybrids under pathogen infection. The genetic perturbation of CCA1 abrogated heterosis for both defense and growth in hybrids. Upon pathogen attack, th

The crucian carp Carassius carassius (Linnaeus, 1758), is native to many European freshwaters. Despite its wide distribution, the crucian carp is declining in both the number and sizes of populations across much of its range. Here we studied 30 individuals of a putative pure population from Helsinki, Finland. Despite clear external morphological features of C. carassius, an individual was of a higher ploidy level than the others. We therefore applied a set of molecular genetic (S7 nuclear and cytochrome b mitochondrial genes) and cytogenetic tools (sequential fluorescent 4', 6-diamidino-2-phen

Hybrid yeasts represent a promising strategy for developing robust microbial platforms capable of sustaining industrial bioprocesses under multifactorial stress conditions, including high ethanol concentrations, osmotic pressure, temperature fluctuations, and inhibitory compounds. This review examines yeast hybridization as an integrative approach that combines complementary genetic and physiological traits from distinct parental lineages to expand metabolic capacity and improve process performance. Evidence indicates that hybridization, particularly when coupled with adaptive evolution, can e

Blood flukes within the genus Schistosoma (schistosomes) are responsible for the major disease, schistosomiasis, in tropical and sub-tropical areas. This disease is predominantly present on the African continent with more than 85% of the human cases. Schistosomes are also parasites of veterinary importance infecting livestock and wildlife. Schistosoma population genetic structure and diversity are important characteristics that may reflect variations in selection pressures such as those induced by host (mammalian and snail) environments, habitat change, migration and also treatment/control int

Molecular hybridization with synthetic radioactive DNA (cDNA) complementry to alpha globin mRNA sequences shows that, as in most other Southeast Asian populations, the alpha globin structural genes are deleted in Filipinos affected by the alpha-thalassemia syndromes. Thus, all 4 alpha-globin structural genes are deleted in homozygous alpha-thalassemia with hydrops fetalis, 3 and 2 structural genes are deleted in hemoglobin H disease and alpha-thalassemia-1 respectively.

We have cloned a segment of the human gene encoding UDP-galactose translocator by genetic complementation of its defective mutant in mouse FM3A cells. Chromosome mapping using fluorescent in situ hybridization revealed that the cloned gene hybridized to the Xp11.23-11.23 region of the X chromosome. This region is shared by the locus of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, an X-linked recessive immunodeficiency disorder, characterized by defective sugar chains on cell surface components. Genetic and phenotypic similarities suggest a possible link between UDP-galactose translocator and the Wiskott-Aldrich

Segregation distorters (SDs) are genetic elements that distort the Mendelian segregation ratio to favor their own transmission and are able to spread even when they incur fitness costs on organisms carrying them. Depending on the biology of the host organisms and the genetic architecture of the SDs, the population dynamics of SDs can be highly variable. Inbreeding is considered an effective mechanism for inhibiting the spread of SDs in populations, and can evolve as a defense mechanism against SDs in some systems. However, we show that inbreeding in the form of selfing in fact promotes the spr

A 12-generation selection experiment involving a selected line (S) and a control line (C) has been conducted since 1992 with the aim of increasing the number of fertile eggs laid by the Brown Tsaiya duck after a single artificial insemination (AI) with pooled Muscovy semen. On average, 28.9% of the females and 17.05% of the males were selected. The selection responses and the predicted responses showed similar trends. The average predicted genetic responses per generation in genetic standard deviation units were 0.40 for the number of fertile eggs, 0.45 for the maximum duration of fertility, a

UNLABELLED: Island endemic birds are under greater threat than their mainland counterparts. Sedentary living and historically reduced predation may affect island bird sociality and inform their conservation and management. However, detailed studies on their sociality are uncommon. The federally- endangered koloa maoli ( Anas wyvilliana, Hawaiian duck, or koloa) is primarily threatened by hybridization with feral mallards and avian botulism outbreaks. We used capture-mark-recapture and genetic data on koloa on the island of Kaua'i, a stronghold of remaining koloa, to construct social networks a

Oaks are characterized by high plasticity and intense interspecific gene flow due to natural hybridization. This generates a wide phenotypic spectrum, which creates taxonomic confusion within the genus. We compared the acorn traits across a temperature gradient in two types of Mediterranean Quercus (Quercus faginea Lam. and Q. pyrenaica Willd.) and their hybrids. Genetic groups were identified using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLPs) analysis. Acorns sampled from each of the three genetic groups were used for comparative purposes by means of 15 morphological characteristics. Eight

PREMISE: Polypodium pellucidum, a fern endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, encompasses five ecologically and morphologically variable subspecies, suggesting a complex history involving both rapid divergence and rampant hybridization.
METHODS: We employed a large target-capture data set to investigate the evolution of genetic, morphological, and ecological variation in P. pellucidum. With a broad sampling across five Hawaiian Islands, we deciphered the evolutionary history of P. pellucidum, identified nonhybrid lineages and intraspecific hybrids, and inferred the relative influence of geography a

Although species can arise through hybridization, compelling evidence for hybrid speciation has been reported only rarely in animals. Here, we present phylogenomic analyses on genomes from 12 macaque species and show that the fascicularis group originated from an ancient hybridization between the sinica and silenus groups ~3.45 to 3.56 million years ago. The X chromosomes and low-recombination regions exhibited equal contributions from each parental lineage, suggesting that they were less affected by subsequent backcrossing and hence could have played an important role in maintaining hybrid in

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cultivated bananas resulted from inter(sub)specific hybridizations involving Musa species and subspecies (M. acuminata subspecies, M. schizocarpa, M. balbisiana) and the subsequent selection, centuries ago, of hybrids with parthenocarpic, seedless fruits. Cultivars have low fertility and are vegetatively propagated, forming groups of somaclones. Relatively few of them, mainly triploids, are grown on a large scale and characterization of their parental relationships may be useful for breeding strategies. Here we investigate parental relationships and gamete-type contributio

Managing the reproduction of shrimp farmed in captivity is essential for selective breeding and interspecies hybridization. Procedures have not been developed for conducting in vitro fertilization in penaeid shrimp. In this study, the feasibility of in vitro fertilization (IVF) of the pre-ovulatory oocyte of Penaeus indicus was examined. Additionally, the processes of fertilization and possibility of hybridizing P. indicus with P. monodon with utilization of IVF procedures was also evaluated. The IVF was conducted by dissecting ovaries with fully developed follicles, and mixing these (~0.1 mil

Interspecific hybridization substantially alters genotypes and phenotypes and can give rise to new lineages. Hybrid isolates that differ from their parental species in infection-relevant traits have been observed in several human-pathogenic yeasts and plant-pathogenic filamentous fungi but have yet to be found in human-pathogenic filamentous fungi. We discovered 6 clinical isolates from patients with aspergillosis originally identified as Aspergillus nidulans (section Nidulantes) that are actually allodiploid hybrids formed by the fusion of Aspergillus spinulosporus with an unknown close relat

Hybridization and polyploidy are pervasive evolutionary features of flowering plants and frequent among some animal groups, such as fish. These processes always lead to novel genotypes and various phenotypes, including growth heterosis. However, its genetic basis in lower vertebrate is still poorly understood. Here, we conducted transcriptome-level analyses of the allopolyploid complex of Carassius auratus red var. (R) (♀) × Cyprinus carpio L. (C) (♂), including the allodiploid and allotetraploid with symmetric subgenomes, and the two allotriploids with asymmetric subgenomes. The gradual chang
