Modification of oxidative stress through changes in some indicators related to phenolic metabolism in Malva parviflora exposed to cadmium.

This study was conducted to investigate the role of phenolic compounds in the antioxidant defense system in Malva parviflora L. plants treated with cadmium (Cd). After surface sterilization, the seeds were sown on seedling trays. Forty-day-old plants were then transferred to hydroponic cultures with Cd (40 μM) or without Cd (control). Some biochemical and physiological parameters were assayed on the sixth day after Cd treatment. Based on the results, the plants showed an increase in leaf soluble carbohydrates, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) ac

Transcriptome and metabolome analyses provide insights into root and root-released organic anion responses to phosphorus deficiency in oat.

Roots and root-released organic anions play important roles in uptake of phosphorus (P), an essential macronutrient for food production. Oat, ranking sixth in the world's cereal production, contains valuable nutritional compounds and can withstand poor soil conditions. Our aim was to investigate root transcriptional and metabolic responses of oat grown under P-deficient and P-sufficient conditions. We conducted a hydroponic experiment and measured root morphology and organic anion exudation, and analysed changes in the transcriptome and metabolome. Oat roots showed enhanced citrate and malate

Changes of Metabolomic Profile in Helianthus annuus under Exposure to Chromium(VI) Studied by capHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS and MS/MS.

The application of capHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS and MS/MS to study the impact of Cr(VI) on metabolites profile in Helianthus annuus is reported. Germinated seeds were grown hydroponically in the presence of Cr(VI) (25 mgCr/L) and root extracts of the exposed and control plants were analyzed by untargeted metabolomic approach. The main goal was to detect which metabolite groups were mostly affected by Cr(VI) stress; two data analysis tools (ProfileAnalysis, Bruker, and online XCMS) were used under criteria of intensity threshold 5 · 104 cps, fold change ≥ 5, and p ≤ 0.01, yielding precursor ions. Metabolomics Reveals Distinct Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolic Responses to Magnesium Deficiency in Leaves and Roots of Soybean [Glycine max (Linn.) Merr.].

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency, a widespread yet overlooked problem in agriculture, has been reported to retard plant growth and development, through affecting key metabolic pathways. However, the metabolic responses of plant to Mg deficiency is still not fully understood. Here we report a metabolomic study to evaluate the metabolic responses to Mg deficiency in soybean leaves and roots. Hydroponic grown soybean were exposed to Mg starvation for 4 and 8 days, respectively. Metabolic changes in the first mature trifoliolate leaves and roots were quantified by conducting GC-TOF-MS based metabolomic a

Comparison of the response to phosphorus deficiency in two lupin species, Lupinus albus and L. angustifolius, with contrasting root morphology.

White lupin (Lupinus albus) produces cluster roots, an adaptation to low soil phosphorus (P). Cluster roots exude large levels of P-solubilizing compounds such as citrate and malate. In contrast, narrow leaf lupin (L. angustifolius) is closely related to L. albus, but does not produce cluster roots. To examine the different strategies for P acquisition, we compared the growth, biomass allocation, respiratory properties and construction cost between L. albus and L. angustifolius under P-deficient conditions. Both Lupinus species were grown in hydroponic culture with 1 or 100 μM P. Under the P-d

Transport via xylem of trichloroethylene in wheat, corn, and tomato seedlings.

Transport via xylem of trichloroethylene (TCE) from roots to shoots in seedlings of wheat, corn, and tomato was measured following a 24-h exposure of plant roots to hydroponic solutions containing TCE. Dewdrops on plant leaves were also collected to test the foliar uptake by plants and the volatilization of TCE from shoot to air. Results indicated that the TCE concentration in xylem sap of wheat and corn decreased significantly with increasing TCE concentration in external solutions, where the initial concentration was set at 10-30 mg l(-1). The translocation stream concentration factor (TSCF)

Is there a critical level of shoot phosphorus concentration for cluster-root formation in Lupinus albus?

This study examined the effects of localised phosphorus (P) supply on cluster-root formation and citrate exudation in white lupin (Lupinus albus L. cv. Kiev Mutant). White lupin plants were grown in nutrient solutions with a range of P supplies in a split-root system with one root half deprived of P and the other root supplied with 0, 2, 5, 8, 10 or 75 μm P. Plants were also grown in soil with or without organic matter added to the top layer. The proportion of cluster roots as a percentage of the total root biomass decreased similarly on both root halves with increasing P supply in the hydropo

Magnesium deficiency phenotypes upon multiple knockout of Arabidopsis thaliana MRS2 clade B genes can be ameliorated by concomitantly reduced calcium supply.

Plant MRS2 membrane protein family members have been shown to play important roles in magnesium uptake and homeostasis. Single and double knockouts for two Arabidopsis thaliana genes, AtMRS2-1 and AtMRS2-5, have previously not shown significant phenotypes even under limiting Mg(2+) supply although both are strongly expressed already in early seedlings. Together with AtMRS2-10, these genes form clade B of the AtMRS2 gene family. We now succeeded in obtaining homozygous AtMRS2-1/10 double and AtMRS2-1/5/10 triple knockout lines after selection under increased magnesium supply. Although wilting e

Nano-selenium alleviates cadmium stress in cherry tomato via modulating subcellular distribution and secondary metabolism.

Cadmium (Cd), a toxic heavy metal, harms plant growth and human health. This study shows that under hydroponic conditions foliar nano-selenium (SeNPs) spraying better alleviates Cd stress in cherry tomatoes than sodium selenate. It boosts seedling biomass, chlorophyll levels, and photosynthetic parameters, reduces malondialdehyde and proline levels in leaves, enhances superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities. Consistently, gene expression analysis revealed that SeNPs markedly upregulated antioxidant-related genes (CAT1, POD) and the auxin-regulating gene (IAA) in leaves. Impor

Bacillus-derived selenium nanoparticles modulate chromium(VI) toxicity through regulation of metal uptake and oxidative stress in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.).

This study explores the bioinorganic potential of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) biosynthesized by Bacillus sp. (AKS_bp1, PQ824612) in mitigating hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] toxicity in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). SeNPs were produced via microbial reduction of sodium selenite and characterized by nanoscale size (~ 100-150 nm), negative surface charge (- 20 mV), and biomolecular capping. Under controlled hydroponic Cr(VI) exposure (0-100 ppm), SeNP treatment significantly reduced Cr accumulation in plant tissues, with decreases of 24% in roots and 45% in shoots, indicating restricted transl

In-situ preparation of highly dispersed Fe doping C3N5 induced by inorganic iron salts with effective activation of PMS for photocatalytic degradation of chlortetracycline.

A highly dispersed Fe in situ doped C3N5 (Fe-C3N5) photocatalyst utilizing inorganic iron salt was successfully prepared, which was applied in photocatalytic synergistic advanced oxidative degradation of chlortetracycline (CTC) under the activation with persulfate. BET measurements revealed that uniform Fe doping increases the specific surface area, thus enhancing the reactive active sites. Photoelectric tests indicate that Fe doping optimizes the energy band structure of C3N5, thereby enhancing electron transfer, and the photogenerated electrons facilitate the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycle, which is

Physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic integrated analyses reveal key factors involved in manganese sulfate mitigating cadmium toxicity in wheat.

Manganese (Mn) has been reported to play a beneficial role in alleviating heavy metal toxicity in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms through which manganese sulfate (MnSO4) mitigates cadmium (Cd) toxicity in wheat remain poorly understood. Herein, we conducted a hydroponic experiment to explore the Cd and Mn accumulation, cell wall components, antioxidative system, transcriptomic and metabolomic responses of wheat seedlings after MnSO4 application under Cd stress. Results showed that MnSO4 application significantly decreased root and shoot Cd contents (69.98 % and 29.04 %) by increasing

Investigation of phloem transport of foliar-absorbed Cd in wheat.

The transport pathway of foliar absorbed Cd in wheat has not been clarified. Hydroponically raised wheat seedling stems were steam girdled to disrupt phloem transport, then the leaves were exposed to Cd solutions (40 or 60 mg L-1) containing 20 mg L-1 Rb (a phloem transport indicator) for 16 h. Plants were harvested 7 days later and divided into roots and leaves, while the stem was divided into two parts above and below the girdling location, with phloem sap collected from the upper part. Samples were analyzed for Cd, Rb, Cu, Zn and Mn concentrations; root glutathione concentration was also an

Quantitative Trait Loci Mappings for the Sulfur Utilization Efficiency-Related Traits at the Seedling Stage of Wheat.

BACKGROUND: Sulfur (S) is a vital element for the normal growth and development of plants, performing crucial biological functions in various life processes. METHODS: This study investigated thirteen S utilization efficiency (SUE)-related traits at the seedling stage of wheat using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population. The quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were mapped by genetic mapping. Thirteen S utilization efficiency-related traits were investigated under two hydroponic culture trials with low S (0.1S, T1), moderate S (0.5S, T2), and high S (1.5S, T3) levels, using the wheat RILs. Preparation of calcium-based phosphate adsorbent and mineral-rich humic acid fertilizer from biomass ash and bamboo by hydrothermal-pyrolysis: Performance and mechanism.

Biomass ash (BA) contains alkaline cations such as K, Ca, and Mg. Due to its high pH, direct application to the soil may result in soil salinization. Composting of BA with organic matter is an effective strategy, but the composting cycle is long and there is a large amount of insoluble residue in the product. Therefore, this research proposed for the first time using the hydrothermal method to rapidly convert BA and bamboo powder (BP) into water - soluble fertilizer (WSF) within 4 h. The insoluble hydrothermal residue was further converted into calcium - rich biochar phosphorus adsorption mate
