Case Report: Late-Onset Pneumonitis after Apoica pallida (Insecta: Hymenoptera) Sting with Anaphylactic Reaction in the Brazilian Amazon.

Hymenopteran venoms, inoculated during stings by ants, bees, and wasps, are the most frequent cause of an IgE-mediated systemic hypersensitivity reaction in adults, which is a key process in drastic manifestations of anaphylaxis. Respiratory involvement is usually caused by pulmonary edema but is rarely described as including interstitial pneumonitis or acute respiratory distress syndrome. Here, we describe a case of severe allergic reaction after a sting by Apoica pallens with late-onset pulmonary involvement, including signs of vasoplegia (pleural effusion) and interstitial pneumonitis with …

Uptake of Neonicotinoid Insecticides by Water-Foraging Honey Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Through Guttation Fluid of Winter Oilseed Rape.

The water-foraging activity of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) on guttation fluid of seed-coated crops, such as winter oilseed rape (WOR; Brassica napus L.), has not yet been evaluated. We analyzed the uptake of active substances (a.s.) in guttation fluid by evaluating residues of honey-sac contents. In autumn, insecticide residues of up to 130 µg a.s. per liter were released in WOR guttation fluid; this concentration is noticeably lower than levels reported in guttation fluid of seed-coated maize. Until winter dormancy, the concentrations declined to <30 µg a.s. per liter. In spring, residues

Effects of a Chenopodium-based botanical insecticide/acaricide on Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and Aphidius colemani (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

UDA-245 is a Chenopodium-based natural insecticide. Forty-eight hours after treatment with this compound, Orius insidiosus (Say) and Aphidius colemani Viereck showed slight contact toxicity at 5 g AI liter(-1). There was no residual toxicity to A colemani. These two beneficials are currently used in commercial flower and vegetable greenhouses for the management of thrips, spider mites, aphids and small caterpillars. In contrast, abamectin and insecticidal soap were toxic by contact to both species. UDA-245 did not reduce the number of eggs laid by treated O insidiosus. The eclosion of these eg

Allergens in hymenoptera venoms. X. Vespid venoms versus venom sac extracts: comparison by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Vespid venoms were compared to venom sac extracts by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using non-equilibrium pH gradient electrophoresis in the first dimension and sodium dodecyl sulfate electrophoresis in the second. The gels were stained with silver. Fresh venoms from four species, Vespula maculifrons, Polistes fuscatus fuscatus, P. metricus and P. exclamans, were compared with commercially available venom sac extracts from the same species. In each case the venom sac extract contained all of the proteins detected in the fresh venom plus numerous additional proteins which ar

Cladistics of the Zethus spinosus de Saussure Species Group: A New Subgenus of Zethus Fabricius, 1804 (Hymenoptera, Vespidae).

Zethus Fabricius is the largest genus of vespid wasps with over 300 species worldwide that are divided into subgenera and further into species groups. Recent phylogenetic studies raised the number of subgenera from four to nine, six of which are in the Neotropics. However, three Neotropical species groups were not assigned to any subgenus due to lack of node support. The Zethus spinosus species group is such a case and, while previously inserted in the nominotypical subgenus, it was recovered closer to Zethus (Zethusculus), but with no support. Thus, a phylogenetic parsimony analysis of morpho

First records of Opius and Apodesmia (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Opiinae) from South Korea, with descriptions of newly-recorded species.

BACKGROUND: The subfamily Opiinae comprises more than 2,000 valid species worldwide. Members of this subfamily are koinobiont endoparasitoids, with parasitism generally culminating in the eventual death of the host. Several species of Opiinae have been utilised for biological control of agricultural pests. The genus Opius is the largest genus within Opiinae, with more than 1,000 valid species worldwide. It is divided into several subgenera, classification of which remains under active discussion. The genus Apodesmia was formerly regarded as a subgenus of Opius, but was elevated to genus level,

High burden of clonal mast cell disorders and hereditary α-tryptasemia in patients who need Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: In patients who require venom immunotherapy (VIT), there is a need to identify underlying mast cell (MC) disorders since these may affect the risk and severity of future sting reactions and the long-term effectiveness of VIT. METHODS: 1319 individuals with Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) who needed VIT from referral centers in Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, and Poland underwent examination for KIT p.D816V in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) using a highly sensitive PCR test and tryptase genotyping by digital droplet PCR. We also included 183 control individuals with large local reac…

Antimicrobial Activity of Propolis from the Brazilian Stingless Bees Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides and Scaptotrigona depilis (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini).

Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides and Scaptotrigona depilis are species of stingless bees capable of producing propolis, which has considerable bioprospecting potential. In this context, the objective of this study was to determine the chemical compositions and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of propolis produced by M. q. anthidioides and S. depilis. The ethanolic extracts of propolis of M. q. anthidioides (EEP-M) and S. depilis (EEP-S) were prepared, and their chemical constituents were characterized by HPLC-ESI-MS. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against bacteria and fungi, i

Toxicity of Essential Oils to Diaphania hyalinata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and Selectivity to Its Parasitoid Trichospilus pupivorus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

Diaphania hyalinata (Linnaeus, 1767) is one of the main pests of the cucurbit crops. Biological control and botanicals are used in integrated pest management (IPM), especially in agro-ecological agricultures where the use of synthetic pesticides is restricted. Toxicological effects of plant essential oils on target and nontarget organisms should be evaluated to determine its use in IPM. The toxicity of ginger, peppermint, oregano, and thyme essential oils to D. hyalinata eggs, larvae, and pupae and their selectivity to the parasitoid Trichospilus pupivorus and the LC50, LC99 and the relative s

Venom and Dufour's glands of the emerald cockroach wasp Ampulex compressa (Insecta, Hymenoptera, Sphecidae): structural and biochemical aspects.

The digger wasp species Ampulex compressa produces its venom in two branched gland tubules. They terminate in a short common duct, which is bifurcated at its proximal end. One leg is linked with the venom reservoir, the other one extends to the ductus venatus. Each venom gland tubule possesses, over its entire length, a cuticle-lined central duct. Around this duct densely packed class 3 gland units each composed of a secretory cell and a canal cell are arranged. The position of their nuclei was demonstrated by DAPI staining. The brush border of the secretory cells surrounds the coiled end-appa

Haploid, diploid, and triploid--discrimination ability against polyploid mating partner in the parasitic wasp, Bracon brevicornis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Because the quality of mating partners varies, females of several taxa have evolved the ability to discriminate against low-quality mates. Although males in the Hymenoptera are usually haploid, diploid males may occur in species with complementary sex determination. Diploid males are almost always sterile in most of the species studied so far. They are thus of very low quality as mating partners, especially when females mate only once in life. We hypothesize that hymenopteran females might have evolved the ability to discriminate against infertile diploid males and avoid mating with them. To t…

Safety profile of hymenoptera venom immunotherapy (VIT) in monosensitized patients: lack of new sensitization to nontreated insect venom.

BACKGROUND: Venom immunotherapy (VIT) has proven to be efficacious in reducing the severity of anaphylactic reactions following field stings in patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy. Due to sequence homologies in the allergens used in Hymenoptera vaccines, there is concern that immunotherapy could lead to sensitization to allergens to which patients were not previously sensitized. The relevance of such an undesired phenomenon is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence of sensitization to Hymenoptera venoms other than those to which the patients were already sensitized and to asses…

Impact of Naturally Composed and Size-Excluded Hymenoptera Venom Preparations on the Safety and Efficacy of Venom Immunotherapy: A Monocentric Experience.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: The first-line treatment for patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy, a potentially life-threatening condition, is venom immunotherapy (VIT). However, for reasons still unclear, honeybee VIT (HBV-IT) is less effective than yellow jacket VIT (YJV-IT). METHODS: This retrospective monocentric study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of naturally composed Hymenoptera venom (NC-HV) in a rush protocol involving a high total venom dose and to compare the results with those previously obtained using size-excluded Hymenoptera venom (SE-HV). Data regarding the num…

A horntail wasp from the Upper Miocene of France closely related to an extant Eastern Palaearctic species (Hymenoptera: Siricidae).

The new siricid wasp Xeris muratensis sp. nov. is described from the Upper Miocene (ca. 5.60 ± 0.3 Ma) Konservat-Laggerstätte of Sainte-Reine (Cantal, France). Its wing venation characters closely resemble those of the extant Eastern Palaearctic siricid species Xeris malaisei Maa. The new species has a completely black body, vs. presence of yellow spots on head and thorax in X. malaisei. The entomofauna in this lacustrine maar consists of a mixture of extinct species or taxa lacking modern relatives that disappeared during the Pliocene-Pleistocene, and taxa with no discernible difference from

An Overview of Ovarian Calyx Fluid Proteins of Toxoneuron nigriceps (Viereck) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae): An Integrated Transcriptomic and Proteomic Approach.

The larval stages of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), are parasitized by the endophagous parasitoid wasp, Toxoneuron nigriceps (Viereck) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). During the injections of eggs, this parasitoid wasp also injects into the host body the secretion of the venom gland and the calyx fluid, which contains a polydnavirus (T. nigriceps BracoVirus: TnBV) and the Ovarian calyx fluid Proteins (OPs). The effects of the OPs on the host immune system have recently been described. In particular, it has been demonstrated that the OPs cause hemocyte…

Effects of toxic baits and food-based attractants for fruit flies on the parasitoid Fopius arisanus (Sonan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of toxic baits and attractants for fruit flies on the biology of its parasitoid Fopius arisanus. We tested two food-based attractants; hydrolysed corn protein (Biofruit® 3%) and sugarcane molasses (7%), their mixtures with spinosad and malathion-based insecticides, and a ready-to-use commercial bait (Success 0.02 CB®). Malathion-based lures were used as references for mortality (i.e., positive control), while negative control was honey. The formulations Biofruit® + malathion (T1), molasses + malathion (T2), and spinosad + molasses (T3) were toxic to F.

A new group of species within the bee genus Ruizantheda, with a revised key to the males of the genus (Hymenoptera: Halictidae: Caenohalictini).

Males of the neotropical bee genus Ruizantheda Moure sensu lato (Halictinae: Caenohalictini) differ from those of other caenohalictine genera in having the outer gonostylar plate with a large membranous region that extends to the ventral region, and the ventral gonostylar lobe retrorse. These features permit the placement of six additional species described here, four of which are new, in the genus in this broader sense. The males of these six species share the following characteristics: profemur swollen; mesofemur exceedingly swollen; mesotibia slightly swollen with flat, minutely ridged vent
