A 79-year-old man had carcinoid syndrome and bilateral pulmonary nodules, which were biopsy confirmed as well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor. PET/CT with Ga-[DOTA-Tyr]-octreotate (Ga-DOTATATE) showed multiple Ga-DOTATATE-avid bilateral pulmonary nodules, left hilar lymph node, as well as diffuse increased Ga-DOTATATE uptake in the prostate. A review of the history revealed that this patient had elevated prostate-specific antigen level. The prostate biopsy did not reveal evidence of prostate cancer but showed benign prostate hyperplasia.

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) is a group of autosomal recessive disorders characterized by defects of adrenal steroidogenesis due to mutations in one of the following enzymes: 21-hydroxylase (21OH), 11β-hydroxylase (11βOH), 17α-hydroxylase (17OH; also known as 17, 20-lyase), 3β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (3βHSD2), steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), P450 cholesterol side-chain cleavage (P450scc), and P450 oxidoreductase (POR). More than 95% of congenital adrenal hyperplasia cases are due to mutations in CYP21A2, the gene encoding the adrenal steroid 21-hydroxylase en

OBJECTIVES: Open arterial revascularization using venous segments is frequently associated with the development of intimal hyperplasia (IH), leading to severe restenosis and graft failure. The lack of treatment to prevent this pathology is a major problem. Therefore, we generated a new porcine model, which closely mimics the clinical development of human IH, to test the therapeutic potential of candidate drugs.
METHODS: A patch of jugular vein was sutured to the right common carotid artery of pigs, to expose the vein to haemodynamic conditions of the arterial bed. Four weeks after surgery, th

A 41-year-old woman developed persistent unilateral conjunctivitis following an upper respiratory infection. A white cystic lesion of the inferior fornix was noted on computed tomography scan to extend behind the orbital septum into the anterior portion of the orbit. Following subtotal excision, histopathology showed benign pseudoadenomatous (pseudoglandular) hyperplasia. The case represents the 5th report of this lesion occurring in the conjunctiva and the only instance of its extension into the orbit.

BACKGROUND: Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a gingival lesion of unknown cause. The purpose of this study is to present a series of LJSGH cases and compare the findings with the literature.
METHODS: After obtaining institutional review board approval, cases of biopsy-proven LJSGH from 2008 through 2018 were retrieved from the University of Pittsburgh Oral Pathology Biopsy Service archives and reviewed. In addition, a comprehensive review of the literature was performed.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight cases were identified. No significant sex predilection was noted (male-

INTRODUCTION: Pituitary hyperplasia due to primary hypothyroidism is rare and underdiagnosed.
CASE REPORT: We report an 18-year-old patient referred for a pituitary mass revealing primary hypothyroidism. Biological parameters confirmed severe primary hypothyroidism and hyperprolactinemia. Outcome was favorable with l-thyroxin supplementation resulting in TSH and prolactin levels normalization and pituitary mass resolution.
CONCLUSION: Pituitary hyperplasia due to primary hypothyroidism, although rare, should be recognized to avoid unnecessary surgery leading to irreversible complications.

A disease can be defined as an abnormal anatomy (pathology) and/or function (physiology) that may cause harm to the body. In clinical benign prostatic hyperplasis (BPH), the abnormal anatomy is prostate adenoma/adenomata, resulting in a varying degree of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) that may cause harm to the bladder or kidneys. Thus clinical BPH can be defined as such and be differentiated from other less common causes of male lower urinary tract symptoms. Diagnosis of the prostate adenoma/adenomata (PA) can be made by measuring the intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP) and prostate v

ACTH-independent macronodular adrenal hyperplasia is a rare cause of Cushing's syndrome (CS), accounting for <2% of all endogenous CS cases; however it is more frequently identified incidentally with sub-clinical cortisol secretion. Recently, cortisol secretion has been shown to be regulated by ectopic corticotropin, which is in turn produced by clusters of steroidogenic cells of the hyperplastic adrenal nodules. Hence, the term 'ACTH-independent' is not entirely appropriate for this disorder. Accordingly, the disease is designated primary macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (PMAH) in this review

Adrenal steroidogenesis is a dynamic process, reliant on de novo synthesis from cholesterol, under the stimulation of ACTH and other regulators. The syntheses of mineralocorticoids (primarily aldosterone), glucocorticoids (primarily cortisol), and adrenal androgens (primarily dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulfate) occur in separate adrenal cortical zones, each expressing specific enzymes. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) encompasses a group of autosomal-recessive enzymatic defects in cortisol biosynthesis. 21-Hydroxylase (21OHD) deficiency accounts for more than 90% of CAH cases and, when

Condylar hyperplasia (CH) is a pathologic condition that causes overdevelopment of the condylar head and neck as well as the mandible. Slowly progressive unilateral enlargement of the head and the neck of the condyle causes crossbite malocclusion, facial asymmetry, and shifting of the midpoint of the chin to the unaffected side. The etiology and the pathogenesis of CH remain uncertain. The diagnosis is made by clinical and radiologic examinations and bone scintigraph. A difference in uptake of 10% or more between condyles is regarded as indicative of CH, and the affected condyles had a relativ

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm that is characterized by a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations as an initial sign or symptom of multiple myeloma are rare. A 58-year-old male patient presented with generalized gingival enlargement for last 6 months. Based on clinical presentation, a diagnosis of gingival hyperplasia was made. After Phase I therapy, excisional biopsy was taken in anterior mandibular region and excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. The histopathology report revealed a lining of stratified squamous epitheliu

Cutaneous pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia is a benign proliferation that can be associated with many nontumoral and tumoral conditions. In the literature, squamous proliferations of different types have been associated with several types of adnexal adenomas. However, we found no reported case of association of hidradenoma papilliferum with pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia. We had the opportunity of studying this type of an association in a 38-year-old man. The hidradenoma was located deep in the corion of the biopsy and the uppermost squamous epithelium showed a pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia

A 16-year-old girl with polycystic ovarian syndrome presented with numerous rufous papules arising within a large depigmented macule that developed following a severe scald injury on the back. Histopathology revealed that many mature sebaceous glands were growing in the middle and bottom of the epidermis with slight acanthosis. On the basis of patient history, clinical manifestation and histopathology, we suggested that this patient's skin lesion be diagnosed as 'sebaceous hyperplasia within epidermis after scald'.

We report an unusual case of pituitary hyperplasia secondary to primary hypothyroidism clinically masquerading pituitary apoplexy. A 22-year-old female presented with intermittent headache, easy fatigability, facial puffiness, coarseness of facial features, and hoarseness of voice for six months duration. Diplopia and diminution of vision was also observed for the last 15 days. Brain imaging findings showed pituitary enlargement, the thyroid function test were suggestive of primary hypothyroidism. Patient did well with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Hyperplasia of the coronoid process of the mandible has been observed in conditions like Oral submucous fibrosis, TMJ ankylosis, etc. The etiopathogenesis of this coronoid overgrowth has not been clearly sequenced or adequately hypothesized, and no definite mechanism has so far been advocated to explain this elongation of the coronoid process in the above mentioned conditions. Coronoid hyperplasia is seen in both these conditions despite being completely unrelated etiologically. However, progressive hypomobility of the mandible seems to be the common underlying condition in both the cases. We

The carotid bodies tend to enlarge after long-standing cardiopulmonary disease. Our objective was to investigate whether cardiac hypertrophy is associated with carotid body hyperplasia. Fifteen autopsy cases with combined left and right ventricular hypertrophy were examined and compared with two control groups (16 cases). The study involved a meticulous dissection of carotid bifurcations, thin serial sections, and morphometric analysis of carotid body volume and cell types (progenitor, dark, light, and sustentacular). There was a significant increase in sustentacular cells in all individuals w

Focal epithelial hyperplasia is a rare, contagious disease associated with infection of the oral mucosa by human papillomavirus types 13 or 32, characterized by multiple soft papules of the same color as the adjacent normal mucosa. It mainly affects the lower lip, buccal mucosa, and tongue. The purpose of this case report was to describe a rare verrucal lesion located in the upper gingiva that was clinically and histologically consistent with focal epithelial hyperplasia.

The majority of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) seek medical help because of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Pharmacological treatment of BPH is indicated if the patient has no absolute indications for prostate surgery or benign prostatic obstruction (BPO), but LUTS with a decrease of quality of life. Plant extracts can be prescribed in men with mild to moderate symptoms. alpha-Blockers can quickly and effectively decrease LUTS and symptomatic disease progression. If patients have predominantly bladder filling symptoms and a small prostate, muscarinic receptor antagonists are
