"I belong to nowhere now": An interpretative phenomenological analysis of Pakistani migrant women's lived experiences of identity, nostalgia, exclusion and wellbeing in Norway.

BackgroundMigrant women's health and wellbeing are shaped by intersecting structures of gender, race, religion, and postcoloniality. Pakistani migrant women in Norway occupy a particular intersection of these structures, in which collectivistic kinship expectations, patriarchal norms, and postcolonial inheritance interact with Norwegian institutional gatekeeping. Despite a growing Pakistani-origin population in Norway, little qualitative research has examined how the identity work of recent first-generation Pakistani migrant women relates to their psychological and social wellbeing.ObjectivesT

Feminist identity as a predictor of eating disorder diagnostic status.

Passive Acceptance (PA) and Active Commitment (AC) subscales of the Feminist Identity Development Scale (FIDS) were examined as predictors of eating disorder diagnostic status as assessed by the Questionnaire for Eating Disorder Diagnoses (Q-EDD). Results of a hierarchical regression analysis revealed PA and AC scores were not statistically significant predictors of ED diagnostic status after controlling for diagnostic subtype. Results of a multiple regression analysis revealed FIDS as a statistically significant predictor of ED diagnostic status when failing to control for ED diagnostic subty

Jesus, peyote, and the holy people: alcohol abuse and the ethos of power in Navajo healing.

Of the three religious healing traditions that coexist within the contemporary Navajo health care system, the Native American Church (NAC) and Pentecostal Christianity are more actively involved in the treatment of alcohol and substance abuse than is Traditional Navajo healing. This article examines these two more recent healing traditions as religious responses to the contemporary Navajo crisis of alcohol and substance abuse as well as to socioeconomic changes. These traditions offer new kinds of power, social networks, and personal meaning that facilitate a transformation of self, a revitali

Visual complexity in letter-by-letter reading: "pure" alexia is not pure.

Standard accounts of pure alexia have favoured the view that this acquired disorder of reading arises from damage to a left posterior occipital cortex mechanism dedicated to the processing of alphanumeric symbols. We challenge these accounts in two experiments and demonstrate that patients with this reading deficit are also impaired at object identification. In the first experiment, we show that a single subject, EL, who shows all the hallmark features of pure alexia, is impaired at picture identification across a large set of stimuli. As the visual complexity of pictures increases, so EL's re

Responses of mental health professionals to man-made trauma: the Israeli experience.

The reactions and responses of mental health professionals in the area of armed conflict is the focus of this paper. It examines the way the therapeutic community has dealt with the survivors of two catastrophes-the Holocaust and warfare. A parallel process of a gradual change of attitudes towards the survivors was observed: emotional detachment, lack of recognition in the early stages and, eventually, social acceptance and empathy. The origins of these attitudes will be discussed, and three explanations will be offered. Israel is a small, stress-ridden country that has known seven full-scale

When subordinates think of their ideals: power, legitimacy and regulatory focus.

Power influences the way people set and pursue their goals. Recent Studies have shown that powerful people, when compared with powerless individuals, have greater accessibility of their promotion goals (for instance, their ideals, their aspirations, etc.). In the current research we aim to explore the moderating role of power's legitimacy in such effect. In Study 1, after manipulating power and legitimacy, the accessibility of ideals was measured. Results showed that in the legitimate condition, the powerful, compared to the powerless people, showed greater accessibility of their ideals. Howev

Psychological correlates of the good old days bias in mild traumatic brain injury.

Non-neurological factors such as the "expectation as etiology" or the "good old days" bias (EE/GOD bias) may partially explain persistent symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). What is less clear from existing research is the degree to which EE/GOD bias is related to other psychological correlates of persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). We examined whether the EE/GOD bias was related to illness perception beliefs, intolerance of uncertainty, suggestibility, and domain identification. Participants with MTBI history and without (controls) reported frequency and severity of

See your friends close and your enemies closer: social identity and identity threat shape the representation of physical distance.

Three studies demonstrated that collective identity and identity threat shape representations of the physical world. In Study 1, New York Yankees fans estimated Fenway Park, the stadium of a threatening out-group (but not Camden Yards, the stadium of a neutral out-group) to be closer than did non-Yankees fans. In Study 2, the authors manipulated identity threat among people affiliated (or not) with New York University (NYU). When Columbia University was portrayed as threatening to NYU, NYU affiliates estimated Columbia as closer than did non-affiliates, compared with when Columbia was nonthrea

Student experiences of neurodiversity in higher education: insights from the BRAINHE project.

The number of students with identified learning differences (LDs) of all kinds is increasing in higher education. This qualitative study explored the experiences of 27 current and previous students with a range of specific LDs by means of semi-structured interviews, using a thematic approach. The findings revealed that participants shared many life experiences and preferences for learning irrespective of their type of LD. Participants generally held one of two views about their identity as 'neurodiverse': a 'difference' view--where neurodiversity was seen as a difference incorporating a set of

Accommodating risk: responses to BRCA1/2 genetic testing of women who have had cancer.

The relationship between risk awareness and anxiety has been the subject of extensive theoretical debate and empirical research. Previous studies of women with a family history of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer suggest that both healthy at-risk women and former cancer patients report increased anxiety upon learning about their increased risks of developing these diseases. Indeed, anxiety about genetic risks has been reported as influencing decisions about DNA-testing and risk-reducing surgery on healthy breasts and ovaries. This qualitative study of women who had been treated for breast/

The other side of the coin: growing up with a learning disability.

This study is a narrative analysis of the life history of Dale, a 25-year-old man with a learning disability who received sensory integrative treatment in early childhood. The analysis revealed that Dale's self likely developed through occupational engagement with three interconnected themes: "my mother said" and "parental tricks"; "adrenaline surges" and "hell-raising"; and work, "deal making," and self-construction. These themes depict Dale's self-construction, character development, occupation selection, and adaptation. In addition, these themes revealed how his parents used principles base

The transitional oedipal relationship in female development.

The concept of the oedipal transitional relationship is proposed as a way of understanding the nature of the psychological-interpersonal process mediating the little girl's entry into the Oedipus complex. This transitional relationship serves to allow the little girl to discover non-traumatically the father as external object in the context of the safety of the dyadic relationship to the mother. In this early phase of oedipal development, the little girl falls in love with the mother-as-father and the father-as-mother, i.e. the mother in her unconscious identification with her own father. In t

Acculturation, Bilateral Hostility, and Psychological Wellbeing of U.S.-dwelling Chinese during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked hostility against Chinese immigrants and sojourners in the U.S. and other countries. Making the situation worse, strong resentment against this group has also emerged in China due to the fear of returnees spreading the disease. Integrating research on acculturation and hostile media perception, we examined how such bilateral hostility along with different acculturation components (i.e., cultural identification, COVID-19-related media use, and individualistic-collectivistic value) influenced U.S.-dwelling Chinese's psychological well-being during the COVID-19 p

A multidimensional model of turnover intention in sport science academia.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the organisational predictors of turnover intention amongst higher education academics, particularly in sports sciences, where academics manage a unique dual role involving both theoretical teaching and practical sports lessons. METHODS: The study explores how organisational identification, commitment, psychological safety, job satisfaction, and mental well-being contribute to turnover intention. Data were collected from 263 sports science academics using validated scales, and hypotheses were tested regarding these variables' direct and indirect effects. R

Measuring associations among social identification, group norms, and alcohol consumption: Testing a social identity model of behavioral associations (SIMBA).

Drawing upon both social identity and balanced identity theories, the social identity model of behavioral associations (SIMBA) presents a novel way of conceptualizing and measuring the relationships among the constructs of social identity, group norms, and individual-level behavior-that is, as cognitive-behavioral associations that mutually interact in a triadic constellation and can be measured both implicitly and explicitly. While the social identity approach suggests that the interaction between social identity and group norms shapes individual behavior, the SIMBA-through adopting the metho

Postmemory.

The urgency of the problem of how to learn from the relatively recent past in order not to repeat its devastating effects, a problem that revolves around the ethics of memory and history, has combined with an awareness that later generations of victims and perpetrators-the "post" generations-may find themselves inhibited in relation to moving forwards because they are not truly "post" at all. It is as if they are haunted by the experiences of their predecessors, which is passed on in some way through stories and selective silences, as well as through the older generation's ways of handling the

Rethinking the nature of cruelty: The role of identity leadership in the Stanford Prison Experiment.

The Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) is one of the most famous studies in the history of psychology. For nearly a half century it has been understood to show that assigning people to a toxic role will, on its own, unlock the human capacity to treat others with cruelty. In contrast, principles of identity leadership argue that roles are unlikely to elicit cruelty unless leaders encourage potential perpetrators to identify with what is presented as a noble ingroup cause and to believe their actions are necessary for the advancement of that cause. Although identity leadership has been implicated
