The inversion-induced size illusion generalizes to real child faces but is absent for cartoon child faces.

Previous studies have revealed that inverted faces are perceived as physically larger than upright faces, called the inversion-induced size illusion-a phenomenon thought to arise from disrupted configural processing. It remains unclear whether this illusion generalizes across other face types (such as real child and cartoon child faces). Thirty Chinese university students completed a psychophysical size-comparison task using the method of constant stimuli under a simultaneous presentation paradigm with limited exposure duration. Experiment 1a replicated the classic inversion-induced size illus

Personalized medicine, scientific revolution or self-serving illusion: viewpoint from EORTC-PAMM Group.

Personalized medicine has redefined oncology by tailoring treatments to molecular and clinical characteristics. However, despite remarkable advances in biomarker discovery and targeted therapy, the integration of pharmacological principles into precision oncology remains limited. The resulting discrepancy between biological innovation and therapeutic optimization contributes to high attrition rates in drug development, inconsistent real-world efficacy, and escalating financial toxicity. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Pharmacology and Molecular Mechanisms Group e

[Simulated consciousness, pseudo-empathy and the illusion of attachment: what can psychiatry do with artificial intelligence?].

Over the past decade, the burden of mental disorders has grown while services remain capacity-constrained, pushing generative artificial intelligence toward psychiatric practice. This narrative review outlines how large language and multimodal models work and where they fail (hallucinations, goal drift, model drift), then appraises the evidence across diagnosis, therapy, and ethical-social implications. We review decision support based on digital phenotyping, clinical text, speech analysis, and wearable sensors, and summarize short-term findings and limitations of protocol-based and generative

Embodied virtual hands intensify kinesthetic illusion and are associated with spontaneous muscle activity: A sEMG study.

Visually induced kinesthetic illusion (V-KI) - the sensation of movement without actual limb motion - has been shown to enhance brain activity related to voluntary movement and to modulate descending volleys at the spinal level. In this study, we sought to determine whether these effects extend to peripheral muscles and whether the magnitude of this response depends on the strength of virtual body embodiment. Twenty-six healthy participants observed videos of their own hand performing wrist movements under conditions that manipulated spatial alignment and included a single tactile-priming sess

The effect of long-term specialized motor experience of the lower limbs on the moving rubber foot illusion.

Past research revealed that specialized long-term motor experience in the upper limbs can result in individuals experiencing variants of the rubber hand illusion less vividly than those without such motor experience. However, it remained unclear whether specialized long-term motor experience had an impact on the experience of body ownership illusions involving the lower extremities. Therefore, a moving rubber foot illusion (mRFI) task (real and rubber feet moved identically for 90s), in addition to control conditions, were conducted with two groups of young adult females, one consisting of 24 …

Exploring the classical and numerical Delboeuf illusion: the impact of transcranial alternating current stimulation on magnitude processing.

Understanding cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying quantity processing is crucial for unraveling human cognition. The existence of a single magnitude system, encompassing non-symbolic number estimation alongside other magnitudes like time and space, is still highly debated since clear evidence is limited. Recent research examined whether spatial biases also influence numerosity judgments, using visual illusions like the Delboeuf illusion. While findings support a generalized magnitude system, direct comparisons of spatial and numerical Delboeuf illusions are missing. This study explored …

The illusion of treatment choice in abortion care: A qualitative study of comparative care experiences in England and Wales.

Treatment choice is a key component of quality, person-centred care, but policies promoting choice often ignore how capacity to choose is unequally distributed and influenced by social structures. In abortion care, the choice of either medication or a procedure is limited in many countries, but the structuring of treatment choice from the perspective of people accessing abortion care is poorly understood. This qualitative study explored comparative experiences of abortion treatment choice in England and Wales, using in-depth interviews with 32 people who recently accessed abortion care and had

Role of kinaesthetic motor imagery in mirror-induced visual illusion as intervention in post-stroke rehabilitation.

Mirror-induced visual illusion obtained through mirror therapy is widely used to facilitate motor recovery after stroke. Activation of primary motor cortex (M1) ipsilateral to the moving limb has been reported during mirror-induced visual illusion. However, the mechanism through which the mirror illusion elicits motor execution processes without movements observed in the mirrored limb remains unclear. This study aims to review evidence based on brain imaging studies for testing the hypothesis that neural processes associated with kinaesthetic motor imagery are attributed to ipsilateral M1 acti

Modulation of the rubber hand illusion by transcranial direct current stimulation over the contralateral somatosensory cortex.

In the rubber hand illusion (RHI), illusory bodily ownership is induced by synchronous touch of a participant's hidden hand and a visible surrogate. This paradigm allows investigating how the brain resolves conflicting multisensory evidence during perceptual inference. Previous studies suggest that the conflict between visual and proprioceptive information preceding the RHI is solved by attenuation of the somatosensory input. To investigate whether excitability-decreasing transcranial direct current stimulation (cathodal tDCS) over the primary somatosensory cortex may enhance the RHI, thirty h

Evidence of top-down modulation of the Brentano illusion but not of the glare effect by transcranial direct current stimulation.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been widely used for modulating sensory, motor and cognitive functions, but there are only few attempts to induce and change illusory perception. Visual illusions have been the most traditional and effective way to investigate visual processing through the comparison between physical reality and subjective reports. Here we used tDCS to modulate two different visual illusions, namely the Brentano illusion and the glare effect, with the aim of uncovering the influence of top-down mechanisms on bottom-up visual perception in two experiments. In E…

Multisensory integration in hemianopia and unilateral spatial neglect: Evidence from the sound induced flash illusion.

Recent neuropsychological evidence suggests that acquired brain lesions can, in some instances, abolish the ability to integrate inputs from … th younger healthy participants (<30 year-old). This evidence indicates that the fission and fusion illusions are dissociable multisensory phenomena, altered differently by impairments of visual perception (i.e. VFD) and spatial attention (i.e. USN). The occipital cortex represents a key cortical site for binding auditory and visual stimuli in the SIFI, whi …

A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore: the illusion of money and the rapid encoding of its true value.

People often evaluate money based on its face value and overlook its real purchasing power, known as the money illusion. For example, the same 100 Chinese Yuan can buy many more goods in Tibet than in Beijing, but such difference in buying power is usually underestimated. Using event related potential combined with a gambling task, we sought to investigate the encoding of both the real value and the face value of money in the human brain. We found that the self-reported pleasantness of outcomes was modulated by both values. The feedback related negativity (FRN), which peaks around 250ms after

Movement under uncertainty: the effects of the rubber-hand illusion vary along the nonclinical autism spectrum.

Recent research has begun to investigate sensory processing in relation to nonclinical variation in traits associated with the autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We propose that existing accounts of autistic perception can be augmented by considering a role for individual differences in top-down expectations for the precision of sensory input, related to the processing of state-dependent levels of uncertainty. We therefore examined ASD-like traits in relation to the rubber-hand illusion: an experimental paradigm that typically elicits crossmodal integration of visual, tactile, and proprioceptive

Direction-specific fMRI adaptation reveals the visual cortical network underlying the "Rotating Snakes" illusion.

The "Rotating Snakes" figure elicits a clear sense of anomalous motion in stationary repetitive patterns. We used an event-related fMRI adaptation paradigm to investigate cortical mechanisms underlying the illusory motion. Following an adapting stimulus (S1) and a blank period, a probe stimulus (S2) that elicited illusory motion either in the same or in the opposite direction was presented. Attention was controlled by a fixation task, and control experiments precluded explanations in terms of artefacts of local adaptation, afterimages, or involuntary eye movements. Recorded BOLD responses were

Size-weight illusion and anticipatory grip force scaling following unilateral cortical brain lesion.

The prediction of object weight from its size is an important prerequisite of skillful object manipulation. Grip and load forces anticipate object size during early phases of lifting an object. A mismatch between predicted and actual weight when two different sized objects have the same weight results in the size-weight illusion (SWI), the small object feeling heavier. This study explores whether lateralized brain lesions in patients with or without apraxia alter the size-weight illusion and impair anticipatory finger force scaling. Twenty patients with left brain damage (LBD, 10 with apraxia,
