Recent methods for detection of viruses in clinical specimens include immunofluorescence, immunoperoxidase, immune adherence hemagglutination, radioimmunoassay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and immunoelectron microscopy. Some are useful for the detection of traces of viral antigens but are more complicated and time-consuming than others. Simple techniques of immunofluorescence and negative stain electron microscopy are used for the rapid detection of viruses in human adenoviral, herpetic, rubella, molluscum contagiosum, and vaccinial infections.

Anti-complementary activity was detected in the sera of 23 (59%) out of 39 patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis; in 10 (29%) out of 34 patients with primary hypothyroidism; in six (17%) out of 36 patients with thyrotoxicosis; and in only six (8%) out of 78 control subjects. Fractionation of Hashimoto sera by Sephadex G-200 chromatography showed that the anti-complementary activity was founding fractions of larger molecular size than monomeric IgG, being localized predominantly in the ascending limb of the second elution peak, suggesting that it was in the form of small immune complexes.

Bone-marrow-derived (B) and thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes can be distinguished by the presence of a number of receptors and differentiation antigens. The presence of these markers has facilitated the identification and characterization of the mononuclear cells in a number of animal and human lymphoid malignancies. We describe here the immunological properties of human leukemia cells that are highly unusual, since they simultaneously bear the receptor for sheep erythrocytes characteristic of human T lymphocytes and the receptor for antigen-antibody-complement complexes characteristic of human

The severe cutaneous adverse reaction epidermal necrolysis (EN) which includes toxic epidermal necrolysis and the milder Stevens-Johnson syndrome is characterized by epidermal loss due to massive keratinocyte apoptosis and/or necroptosis. EN is often caused by a drug mediating a specific TCR-HLA interaction via the (pro)hapten, pharmacological interaction or altered peptide loading mechanism involving a self-peptide presented by keratinocytes. (Memory) CD8 + T cells are activated and exhibit cytotoxicity against keratinocytes via the perforin/granzyme B and granulysin pathway and Fas/FasL inte

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between infection with SARS-CoV-2 and autoimmunity.
RECENT FINDINGS: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) associated coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although most of the infected individuals are asymptomatic, a proportion of patients with COVID-19 develop severe disease with multiple organ injuries. Evidence suggests that some medications used to treat autoimmune rheumatologic diseases might have therapeutic effect in patients with severe COVID-19 in

Eleven patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia of T-cell origin are reported. The identification of the leukaemic cells was performed with seven different membrane markers for either T or B lymphocytes. The reactivity of the leukaemic T cells with three different heteroantisera to T cells differed from patient to patient but was homogeneous in individual cases. This finding suggests that the leukaemic lymphocytes belonged to a single subset of T cells. These lymphocytes responded to allogeneic cells in some of these patients. In contrast, stimulation by non-specific mitogens was poor in mo

In six patients with acute leukemia (about 2% of the patients referred for acute lymphoblastic leukemia) the blast cells invading bone marrow and blood showed all the cytologic, cytochemical, and electron microscopy features of Burkitt's tumor cells. The presence of monoclonal surface immunoglobulins (their synthesis being proved by in vitro culture experiments), the binding of IgG aggregates, and the absence of rosette formation with sheep red cells documented the monoclonal B-cell origin of these blast cells which is in sharp contrast to the findings in common acute lymphoblastic leukemia. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gut flora/host interactions are fundamental for the maintenance of homeostasis. Evidence of possible regulatory effect of commensal bacteria on proliferative disorders of the colon is mounting. In this study, we explored the hypothesis that precancerous lesions, such as adenomas, present alteration of the local microflora and lead to an overproduction of antibacterial molecules of the innate immunity, namely α-defensins. Thus, the host-bacteria misbalance could represent a potential procarcinogenic factor.
METHODS: Biopsies from adenomatous polyps and normal mucosa, in the

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are immune-modifying agents that have shown efficacy in improving response rates and reducing infusion reactions associated with uricase therapy for uncontrolled gout by inhibiting anti-drug antibody (ADA) formation. However, increased gout flare rates following initiation of uricase therapy remain a concern, impacting patient quality of life and treatment adherence. Gout flares are an acute inflammatory reaction to monosodium urate crystals, driven by inflammasome activation. As such, it is possible that DMARDs could impact gout flare risk. In th

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of CO(2) insufflation with different pressures upon the injury, proliferation and secretion of peritoneal mesothelial cells and the possible effects of gastric cancer cells adhering to mesothelial cells.
METHODS: Primary cultured peritoneal mesothelial cells were divided into CO(2) and control group. In CO(2) group, the cells were exposed to CO(2) at different pressures (10, 12 and 15 mm Hg). And then the cellular injury was detected by LDH assay, the proliferation quantified by MTT assay and the secretion measured by ELISA. Flow cytometry was used to ana

As with other types of leukocytes, mechanisms that function to enable the recruitment of eosinophils into specific sites of immune reactions involve a complex and cumulative interplay of many molecules and pathways. No single chemoattractant is specific for eosinophils, but rather various chemoattractants active on eosinophils can also elicit migration of other specific cell types. Humoral mediators causing eosinophil migration include C5a and platelet-activating factor, whereas cytokines active as eosinophil chemoattractants include interleukin (IL)-2, IL-3, IL-5, granulocyte/macrophage colon

Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is the main pathogenic bacterium causing dental caries, and the modes in which its traits, such as acid production, acid tolerance, and adhesion that contribute to the dental caries process, has been clarified. However, a growing number of animal experiments and clinical revelations signify that these traits of S. mutans are not restricted to the detriment of dental tissues. These traits can assist S. mutans in evading the immune system within body fluids; they empower S. mutans to adhere not merely to the surface of teeth but also to other tissues such as vasc

When spleen, mesenteric lymph node, or Peyer's patch cells from mice primed 24 h before with either sheep erythrocytes (SRC) or horse erythrocytes (HRC) were transferred together with both SRC and HRC to irradiated mice, antibody responses measured 7 days later were very low to the priming antigen but high to the other antigen. This was demonstrated either by measuring numbers of antibody-forming cells in spleen or levels of hemagglutinins in serum. Specific unresponsiveness of the transferred cells was evident in both the 19S and 7S responses. It was observed only when strict experimental con

Receptors for polymerised human albumin (pHSA-Rs) were detected in unfixed cryostat sections from HBsAg chronic carriers using direct immunoperoxidase and immunoadherence methods. Although pHSA-Rs were detected by both methods, the receptors detected by immunoperoxidase were associated with HBV and showed properties different from the receptors detected by immunoadherence. The double immunocytochemical staining which detected contemporaneously pHSA-Rs and HBsAg in the same cell showed that there are two types of infected hepatocytes: one capable of synthesizing pHSA-Rs and HBsAg and the other
