Transfer of T-cell mediated immunity to Hymenolepis nana from mother mice to their neonates.

Administration of lymph node cells from Hymenolepis nana-infected mice into lactating mothers, or directly suckling neonates successfully transferred immunity to the neonates. The capacity of lymph node cells to transfer immunity was completely abrogated by pretreatment with anti-Thy-1.2 monoclonal antibody and complement.

Antibody responses in protein-energy restricted beef cows and their cold stressed progeny.

Antibody titers were measured in serum and colostral whey of pregnant beef cows immunized with tetanus toxoid and chicken red blood cells while being fed diets either restricted or nonrestricted in protein and/or metabolizable energy during the last 150 days of gestation. Serum antibody titers were also measured in the colostrum-fed, cold and noncold stressed progeny that were actively immunized with dinitrophenol conjugated to keyhole limpet hemocyanin. In general, there were no major or sustained differences in humoral immune responses to injection of tetanus toxoid or chicken red blood cell

Immunology of the infant rat experimental model of Haemophilus influenzae type b meningitis.

The age-related acquisition of serum anticapsular and bactericidal antibodies to Haemophilus influenzae type b observed in rats was similar to that of humans. The antigenic source for this "natural" immunity was not identified since neither pharyngeal infection with H. influenzae b nor enteric colonization by cross-reacting bacteria was detected. Infant rats surviving H. influenzae b bacteremia failed to respond immunologically to the capsular polysaccharide. However, surviving rats demonstrated no impairment of immune responsiveness to this antigen after subsequent immunization with live bact

Impact of the maternal microbiome on neonatal immune development.

Historically, multigenerational health and disease transmission have primarily focused on genetic inheritance. However, the discovery that beneficial microorganisms known as commensal microbiota outnumber human genes tenfold has reshaped this perspective, highlighting their critical role in maintaining homeostasis and protecting against pathogens. Unlike the human genome, commensal microbiota is not genetically inherited but is acquired anew with each generation. with initial gut colonization playing a pivotal role in shaping an infant's immune system, neurodevelopment, and long-term health, a

Acceptance of the respiratory syncytial virus infant monoclonal antibody nirsevimab among post-partum women in Italy.

The purposes of the cross-sectional survey were to investigate among a sample of post-partum women in Italy the attitudes and the behaviors about the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infant monoclonal antibody and to explore any associations with different characteristics. The survey was conducted between March and April 2025 in teaching and public hospitals randomly selected in Southern Italy. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire through a face-to-face interview for those women in the maternity wards and by telephone for those who were at home.A total of 476 women complete

Current concepts in maternal-fetal immunology: Recognition and response to microbial pathogens by decidual stromal cells.

Chorioamnionitis is an acute inflammation of the gestational (extraplacental) membranes, most commonly caused by ascending microbial infection. It is associated with adverse neonatal outcomes including preterm birth, neonatal sepsis, and cerebral palsy. The decidua is the outermost layer of the gestational membranes and is likely an important initial site of contact with microbes during ascending infection. However, little is known about how decidual stromal cells (DSCs) respond to microbial threat. Defining the contributions of individual cell types to the complex medley of inflammatory signa

Measles immunization strategy: measles antibody response following MMR II vaccination of children at one year of age.

Measles antibody levels were determined by the plaque reduction neutralization (PRN) test in 580 one-year-old children before vaccination and four to six weeks after MMR II vaccination. Fifty-one (8.8%) had maternally derived measles antibody at prevaccination, and this was more common among children of women born before 1967 (10.6%) vs. 4.3%; p < 0.01). Among those with maternal antibody, only 22 (43.1%) responded with a protective PRN titre of over 120, in contrast to 463 (87.5%) of the 529 without maternal antibody at prevaccination (p < 0.0001). Also, the geometric mean titre was significa

To B or not to B cells-mediate a healthy start to life.

Maternal immune responses during pregnancy are critical in programming the future health of a newborn. The maternal immune system is required to accommodate fetal immune tolerance as well as to provide a protective defence against infections for the immunocompromised mother and her baby during gestation and lactation. Natural immunity and antibody production by maternal B cells play a significant role in providing such immunoprotection. However, aberrations in the B cell compartment as a consequence of maternal autoimmunity can pose serious risks to both the mother and her baby. Despite their

Inactivated Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus vaccine complexed with specific antibody: enhanced primary immune response and altered pattern of antibody class elicited.

Complexes of formalinized Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus vaccine and specific IgG formed at antigen-antibody equivalence enhanced the immune responses of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). The predomonant class of antibody elicited by complexes was IgG. In contrast, lower titers of antibody and a more biphasic (IgG-IgM) response were observed after exposure of monkeys to the vaccine alone. In comparison to the response of monkeys primed with antigen, a more rapid secondary response was obtained in monkeys primed with the complexes of antigen and antibody formed at equivalence. A

Immunoglobulins associated with passive transfer of resistance to Taenia taeniaeformis in the mouse.

Mice were found to be protected against Taenia taeniaforMis infection by passive transfer of serum collected from donors 28 days after infection. The protective activity resided exclusively in the first fraction of 7S immunoglobulins eluting from DEAE-cellulose at pH 5.8 with 0.05 M phosphate buffer. This fraction contained 7Sgamma1 and 7Sgamma2 immunoglobulins but no detectable gammaA, gammaM or skin sensitizing activity. Fractions containing 7Sgamma 2 alone were ineffective in passive transfer.

[Neonatal Fc receptor : role and implications in maternal fetal medicine].

During pregnancy, the mother's IgG immunoglobulins cross the -placenta via the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), enabling the fetus to acquire passive immunity. In the presence of maternal allo- or auto-antibodies, placental transfer of these pathogenic antibodies mediated by FcRn can cause diseases in the fetus and/or the newborn. FcRn blockade therefore appears to be a therapeutic strategy in these high-risk pregnancies, firstly by reducing IgG recycling, -thereby reducing its concentration in the maternal circulation, and secondly by blocking placental transfer. The promising results of a recent

Maternal immunization and vitamin A sufficiency impact sow primary adaptive immunity and passive protection to nursing piglets against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus infection.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes a highly contagious enteric disease with major economic losses to swine production worldwide. Due to the immaturity of the neonatal piglet immune system and given the high virulence of PEDV, improving passive lactogenic immunity is the best approach to protect suckling piglets against the lethal infection. We tested whether oral vitamin A (VA) supplementation and PEDV exposure of gestating and lactating VA-deficient (VAD) sows would enhance their primary immune responses and boost passive lactogenic protection against the PEDV challenge of their pi

Susceptibility of mice treated with cyclophosphamide to lethal infection with Leptospira interrogans Serovar pomona.

Mice not normally susceptible to infection with Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona were rendered susceptible to lethal infections by treatment with a single dose of 300 mg of cyclophosphamide (Cy) per kg administered optimally from 4 days before to 1 day after infection. Cy-treated mice with either passively or actively acquired antibody were protected from death. Blood levels of leptospires in infected untreated and in Cy-treated mice remained similar until 2 days after infection, when untreated mice cleared the leptospires. Soon afterwards, opsonizing and agglutinating antibody appeared.

The effect of anti-lymphocyte globulin on cell-mediated reistance to infection.

The specificity of anti-lymphocyte globulin (ALG) has been used to analyze an immune mechanism which is mediated by immunologically committed lymphoid cells to the apparent exclusion of humoral antibody. Rabbit antimouse lymphocyte globulin completely suppressed the immunity which can be passively transferred with Listeria-immune lymphoid cells from actively infected donors. When prospective donors were given a single dose of 1.0 mg of ALG, it remained active against immune lymphoid cells transferred 24 hr later; yet immune cells in the spleens of donors could not be inactivated in situ by eve

Immunization with mRNA-LNP Elicits De Novo IgG Responses in the Presence of Maternal Antibody.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maternal antibodies can inhibit vaccine-specific humoral responses in early life, leaving infants at increased risk for severe disease for vaccine-preventable infections. In the case of SARS-CoV-2, infants under the age of 3 months represented most child hospitalizations, yet there is no approved vaccine for children under the age of 6 months. There is a clear need for effective immunization in early life to prevent infant morbidity and mortality. Here, we established a mouse model to define how maternally derived antibodies shape early-life responses to mRNA vaccination
