The Healthy Cities process uses action research to empower communities to take action for health. Five concepts that link community empowerment and action research are: focus on community, citizen participation, information and problem solving, sharing of power, and quality of life. Two city examples from Healthy Cities Indiana, a pilot program of CITYNET Healthy Cities, provide illustrations of these concepts. Twelve members of the Indiana hereditary amyloidosis type II kindred were tested for the presence of amyloid deposits. All were young adults (age 26-37), with no evidence of disease and with 1 affected parent. Six were found to be carriers of the variant gene, by DNA testing and/or reduced serum retinol-binding protein levels. Nevertheless, no amyloid could be found in any skin, rectal, or carpal tunnel biopsy specimens. A review of 18 cases of Reye's syndrome autopsied at Indiana University Hospital since 1970 was done to document pancreatic lesions associated with the syndrome. A spectrum of inflammatory lesions was identified and grouped into four categories: group 1, no changes; group 2, minimal microscopic changes; group 3, moderate changes, ie, focal necrosis, exudates, or congestion; and group 4, severe acute pancreatitis.
