Three types of infant formula (soy, extensively hydrolysed and amino acid) may be appropriate for treating cows milk protein allergy. Selection of a formula depends on the allergy syndrome to be treated. Extensively hydrolysed formula is recommended as first choice for infants under 6 months of age for treating immediate cows milk allergy (non-anaphylactic), food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, atopic eczema, gastrointestinal symptoms and food protein-induced proctocolitis. Soy formula is recommended as first choice for infants over 6 months of age with immediate food reactions, and fo

BACKGROUND: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may influence immune development. We examined the association of PUFAs in human milk with food sensitization and atopic dermatitis among breastfed infants.
METHODS: In a selected subgroup of 1109 mother-infant dyads from the CHILD Cohort Study, human milk was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography to quantify PUFAs including arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). At 1 year of age, food sensitization was determined by skin-prick testing for egg, peanut, cow's milk, and soybean, and atopic dermatitis was diagnosed by pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: The presence of veterinary drug residues in food-producing animals and animal products is regulated through the enforcement of maximum residue limits (MRLs). To answer the need of the food sector to monitor these substances in a wide range of food commodities, stakeholders at AOAC INTERNATIONAL identified the need for a reliable confirmatory screening method. Such a qualitative approach is required for compliance checking and to support product release in manufacturing.
OBJECTIVE: Data were collected from five independent laboratories that applied the First Action Official Method

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fermented dairy food (FDF) operationalized in this study as cheese and yogurt, contains beneficial microbes and bioactive metabolites that may support maternal and offspring health, yet FDF intake and its association with maternal-offspring health outcomes is understudied in the US population. We evaluated the associations between FDF intake during pregnancy from the participants of The Growing Life, Optimizing Wellness Study (GLOWING, ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT01131117) and gestational weight gain (GWG), macrosomia (body weight ≥4000g at birth), and mother and infant micr

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition interventions may have favourable as well as unfavourable effects. The Maternal and Infant Nutrition Interventions in Matlab (MINIMat), with early prenatal food and micronutrient supplementation, reduced infant mortality and were reported to be very cost-effective. However, the multiple micronutrients (MMS) supplement was associated with an increased risk of stunted growth in infancy and early childhood. This unfavourable outcome was not included in the previous cost-effectiveness analysis. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the MINIMat interventions remain co

PURPOSE: To determine the stability of appetitive traits during infancy and their association with early life exposures.
METHODS: Participants were from the BiTwin birth cohort (longitudinal study of Portuguese infants). Appetitive traits at 3 months were measured using the Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (n = 347) and at 12 months with the Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire for toddlers (n = 325). Stability was assessed with multi-level models. The association of early life exposures (weight for gestational age, mode of feeding, prematurity, smoking during pregnancy, maternal pre-

It has recently been suggested that doctors have a duty to act in their patient's best interest and that this duty demands that life-sustaining treatment--including food and fluids--should sometimes be withheld or withdrawn and the patient allowed to die. In this article, the author explores the scope of the 'best interests principle' in the context of treatment decisions for seriously handicapped newborn infants. She argues that those who hold that it is permissible to starve or dehydrate an infant to death are mistaken to think that this course of action is in the infant's best-interests. Wh

BACKGROUND: Thiamin deficiency is a major public health concern in several low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)-current attention to the problem is lacking.
AIM: This review discusses prevalence of thiamin insufficiency and thiamin-deficiency disorders (TDDs) in LMICs, outlines programmatic experience with thiamin interventions, and offers recommendations to improve public-health and research attention to thiamin in LMICs.
DISCUSSION: Thiamin insufficiency, i.e. low-blood-thiamin status, is endemic among several Southeast Asian countries: Cambodia (70-100% of infants and 27-100% of repro

BACKGROUND: Human milk is thought to reduce infant atopy risk. The biologic mechanism for this protective effect is not fully understood.
OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that infant consumption of 4 microRNAs (miR-146b-5p, miR-148b-3p, miR-21-5p, and miR-375-3p) in human milk would be associated with reduced atopy risk.
METHODS: The Breast Milk Influence of the Microtranscriptome Profile on Atopy in Children over Time (IMPACT) study involved a cohort of mother-infant dyads who planned to breastfeed beyond 4 mo. Infant consumption of the 4 human milk microRNAs (miRNAs) in the first 6 mo

As the prevalence of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy continues to increase without an imminent cure, prevention has become an urgent need. A breakthrough study that shows that early consumption of peanut can prevent the development of peanut allergy has led for a push in early interventions. Theories associated with the increasing prevalence of food allergy lend themselves to areas of potential intervention, e.g., age at time of food introduction, infant feeding practices, microbiome influences, diet composition, vitamin D deficiency, and increasing rates of eczema. This review fo

As most parents and caregivers are aware, feeding children a nutritionally balanced diet can be challenging. Children are born with a biological predisposition to prefer sweet and to avoid bitter foods such as green leafy vegetables. It has been hypothesized that this predisposition evolved to attract children to energy-dense foods while discouraging the consumption of toxins. Although this may have enhanced survival in environments historically characterized by food scarcity, it is clearly maladaptive in many of today's food environments where children are surrounded by an abundance of sweet-

BACKGROUND: The effect of infant feeding practices on the development of food allergy remains controversial. We examined the relationship between timing and patterns of food introduction and sensitization to foods at age 1 year in the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort study.
METHODS: Nutrition questionnaire data prospectively collected at age 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months were used to determine timing of introduction of cow's milk products, egg, and peanut. At age 1 year, infants underwent skin prick testing to cow's milk, egg white, and peanut. Logistic regr

A case study which illustrates the infant's ability to regulate caloric intake through adjustments in formula intake is presented. A daily record of infant formula and supplemental food intake of a normal, bottle-fed male infant was kept from 1 week to 9 months after birth. The infant's physical growth was assessed at regular intervals. Measurements included weight, recumbent length, head circumference, and skinfold thicknesses. Feeding was ad libitum, and caregivers were highly responsive to the infant's satiety behaviors. Under these conditions, the infant adjusted his caloric intake as supp

Cronobacter is an emerging bacterial pathogen associated with infections such as necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, and meningitis in neonates and infants, related to the consumption of powdered infant formula. In addition, this bacterium can also cause infections in adults by the ingestion of other foods. Thus, this review article aims to report the occurrence and prevalence of Cronobacter spp. in foods of plant origin, as well as the possible sources and routes of contamination in these products, and the presence of pathogenic strains in these foods. Cronobacter was present in a wide variety

Early nutrition is considered to be crucial for development of persistent obesity in later life. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of complementary feeding patterns across European countries. Most European infants introduce solid foods earlier than 6 completed months of age as recommended by WHO. The commonest risk factors for early introduction of solid foods have been shown to be smoking mothers of young age, low SES and no breastfeeding. The foods most frequently introduced as first solids are fruit and cereals followed by other foods that vary depending on the country of resi

Dry infant foods are not sterile and could be contaminated with various bacteria including certain pathogens. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in infant foods and to characterize these strains. A total of 367 infant food samples, including 143 samples of powdered infant formula milk (PIF) and 224 samples of infant rice cereal (IRC), were collected in the Shaanxi Province of China during the period of July to August 2010 and screened for S. aureus. All S. aureus isolates were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility testing, pulsed-field gel …

Vitamin A deficiency remains a significant health risk in developing countries, affecting infants and children in particular. To counter child malnutrition, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed to ensure that their children receive adequate macro- and micronutrients, including vitamin A. However, this assumes that the mother has sufficient vitamin A intake to provide enough vitamin A to her child. This study investigates maternal and infant intakes of locally available foods of high vitamin A content in a rural agricultural community in Kenya. The study aims to establish the community risk for
