Immune Control of Avian Influenza Virus Infection and Its Vaccine Development.

The avian influenza A virus (AIV) is naturally prevalent in aquatic birds, infecting different avian species and transmitting from birds to humans. Both AIVs, the H5N1 and H7N9 viruses, have the potential to infect humans, causing an acute influenza disease syndrome in humans, and are a possible pandemic threat. AIV H5N1 is highly pathogenic, whereas AIV H7N9 has comparatively low pathogenicity. A clear insight into the disease pathogenesis is significant to understand the host's immunological response, which in turn facilitates the design of the control and prevention strategies. In this revi

Epidemiology and Control of Opisthorchis viverrini Infection: Implications for Cholangiocarcinoma Prevention.

It is known that Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) is the most significant risk factor for the development of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA); hence, it is also known as carcinogenic parasite. Effective control and elimination of OV infection should significantly reduce O. viverrini-related CCA. This chapter includes details of the three recently developed innovative tools, namely the Isan cohort database software, an OV-RDT for screening of O. viverrini, and an ultrasound telecommunication system. Past and current control programs, i.e., education, medication, and sanitation were discussed and stressed th

Functional flexibility and plasticity in immune control of systemic Salmonella infection.

Immunity to systemic Salmonella infection depends on multiple effector mechanisms. Lymphocyte-derived interferon gamma (IFN-γ) enhances cell-intrinsic bactericidal capabilities to antagonize the hijacking of phagocytes as replicative niches for Salmonella. Programmed cell death (PCD) provides another means through which phagocytes fight against intracellular Salmonella. We describe remarkable levels of flexibility with which the host coordinates and adapts these responses. This involves interchangeable cellular sources of IFN-γ regulated by innate and adaptive cues, and the rewiring of PCD pat

Infection prevention and control staffing and programs in Middle Eastern Countries.

INTRODUCTION: Infection prevention and control (IPC) programs in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries are evolving. The objective was to characterize IPC personnel and programs in MENA countries, with special emphasis on the differences between Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and non-GCC countries. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in 2019 among IPC members of the Arab Countries Infection Control Network (AcicN). The survey focused on three domains; demographic and professional characteristics, organizational structure, and IPC program characteristics.…

Chronic Kidney Disease and COVID-19 Infection: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: To organize efforts to manage the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is necessary to understand which groups are at higher risk of infection. Kidney disease seems to be substantial in COVID-19 patients, but there are limited data on COVID-19 incidence and fatality among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. In this study, we intend to examine the association between CKD and susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were selected from those recruited in a population-based cross-sectional survey of CKD prevalence and associated risk factors in I

Reimagining zoonotic malaria control in communities exposed to Plasmodium knowlesi infection.

Plasmodium knowlesi malaria infection in humans has been reported throughout southeast Asia. The communities at risk are those living in areas where Macaque monkeys and Anopheles mosquito are present. Zoonotic malaria control is challenging due to the presence of the reservoir host and the possibility of human-vector-human transmission. Current control measures, including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), are insufficient to address this threat due to gaps in protection associated with outdoor and early evening vector biting and social and economic activities,

Green Nano-Biotechnology: A New Sustainable Paradigm to Control Dengue Infection.

Dengue is a growing mosquito-borne viral disease prevalent in 128 countries, while 3.9 billion people are at high risk of acquiring the infection. With no specific treatment available, the only way to mitigate the risk of dengue infection is through controlling of vector, i.e., Aedes aegypti. Nanotechnology-based prevention strategies like biopesticides with nanoformulation are now getting popular for preventing dengue fever. Metal nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by an eco-friendly process, through extracts of medicinal plants have indicated potential anti-dengue applications. Green synthesis

B cell-derived IL-27 promotes control of persistent LCMV infection.

Recent studies have identified a critical role for B cell-produced cytokines in regulating both humoral and cellular immunity. Here, we show that B cells are an essential source of interleukin-27 (IL-27) during persistent lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) clone 13 (Cl-13) infection. By using conditional knockout mouse models with specific IL-27p28 deletion in B cells, we observed that B cell-derived IL-27 promotes survival of virus-specific CD4 T cells and supports functions of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells. Mechanistically, B cell-derived IL-27 promotes CD4 T cell function, antibody

[Retrospective Analysis of Severe Renal Infections Requiring Nephrectomy to Control Infection].

Patients who contract severe renal infections often suffer from urosepsis. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are required. Sometimes, the treatment with antibiotics is not enough for control of the infections. Most of the patients also require surgical interventions including transurethral drainage and nephrectomy. Twenty-two patients with severe renal infections treated between April 2010 and October 2019 at our institute were evaluated retrospectively. Eleven patients had undergone nephrectomy. Open nephrectomy was performed on 10 patients. Laparoscopic nephrectomy was attempted in th

Repurposing Saquinavir for Host-Directed Therapy to Control Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection.

Despite the available antibiotics, tuberculosis (TB) has made its return since the 90's of the last century as a global threat mostly due to co-infection with HIV, to the emergence of drug resistant strains and the lack of an effective vaccine. Host-directed strategies could be exploited to improve treatment efficacy, contain drug-resistant strains, improve immune responses and reduce disease severity. Macrophages in the lungs are often found infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and/or with HIV. The long-term survival of lung macrophages infected with Mtb or with HIV, together with t

[Covid-19 in patients on dialysis: infection prevention and control strategies].

Covid-19 is a disease caused by a new coronavirus presenting a variability of flu-like symptoms including fever, cough, myalgia and fatigue; in severe cases, patients develop pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis and septic shock, that can result in their death. This infection, which was declared a global epidemic by the World Health Organization, is particularly dangerous for dialysis patients, as they are frail and more vulnerable to infections due to the overlap of multiple pathologies. In patients with full-blown symptoms, there is a renal impairment of various degrees in

Strategies to Control Human Lymphatic Filarial Infection: Tweaking Host's Immune System.

Human lymphatic filariasis (LF), a parasitic infection caused by the nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori, and transmitted by mosquito, results in a debilitating disease commonly identified as 'elephantiasis'. LF affects millions of people in India and several other tropical and sub-tropical countries imposing a huge economic burden on governments due to disability associated loss of man-hours and for disease management. Efforts to control the infection by WHO's mass drug administration (MDA) strategy using three antifilarials diethylcarbamazine, albendazole and ivermect

Efficacy of ivermectin to control Strongyloides stercoralis infection in sheltered dogs.

In dogs, information on treatments against S. stercoralis infection is rare and anecdotal. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the treatment outcome of S. stercoralis natural infection in sheltered dogs. Furthermore, based on the potential risk of infection, people working in the infected shelter were also tested. Seventeen sheltered dogs positive to S. stercoralis using the Baermann test were treated with ivermectin 200 μg/kg/sid/os for two consecutive days. Only two dogs showed clinical signs suggestive of strongyloidiasis (diarrhea, weigh loss) at diagnosis. All dogs showed consiste

Z-DNA Binding Protein Mediates Host Control of Toxoplasma gondii Infection.

Intrinsic to Toxoplasma gondii infection is the parasite-induced modulation of the host immune response, which ensures establishment of a chronic lifelong infection. This manipulation of the host immune response allows T. gondii to not only dampen the ability of the host to eliminate the parasite but also trigger parasite differentiation to the slow-growing, encysted bradyzoite form. We previously used RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to profile the transcriptomes of mice and T. gondii during acute and chronic stages of infection. One of the most abundant host transcripts during acute and chronic infe

Hints for control of infection in unique extrahepatic vertebral alveolar echinococcosis.

The prognosis of vertebral alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is poor. We report on the unique outcome of a patient with preexisting liver cirrhosis, in whom a diagnosis of vertebral AE was established on vertebral histopathology (D4 corporectomy in 2010 for paraplegia). Therapeutic drug monitoring of albendazole (ABZ) showed that a low dosage was appropriate. The patient recovered and ABZ withdrawal was decided in 2014, with no relapse 18 months later. In this patient, infection was purely or mainly localized in the dorsal spine, and this may have been favored by liver cirrhosis. A longer follow-up
