Using herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) to attract specific natural enemies in the field has proven challenging, partly because of a poor understanding of: (i) which compound(s) to manipulate to attract specific taxa, and (ii) the ecological conditions over which HIPVs are effective. To address these issues, we quantified the response of a complex arthropod community to three common HIPVs (methyl salicylate, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, and phenylethyl alcohol) as individual compounds and equal part blends in corn and soybean fields. Of 119 arthropod taxa surveyed, we found significant responses

The phylum Arthropoda includes arachnids and insects. Although their bites typically cause only local reactions, some species are venomous or transmit disease. The two medically important spiders in the United States are widow spiders (Latrodectus), the bite of which causes intense muscle spasms, and the brown recluse (Loxosceles), which may cause skin necrosis. Widow bites usually respond to narcotics, benzodiazepines, or, when necessary, antivenom. Most recluse bites resolve uneventfully without aggressive therapy and require only wound care and minor debridement. Tick bites can transmit dis

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne parasitic neglected tropical disease. In 2000, WHO launched the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) as a public health problem. In 2020, new goals for 2030 were set which includes a reduction to 0 of the total population requiring Mass Drug Administrations (MDA), a primary tool of GPELF. We develop a mathematical model to study what can happen at the end of MDA. We use a game-theoretic approach to assess the voluntary use of insect repellents in the prevention of the spread of LF through vector bites. Our results show that wh…

Larvae of some leaf beetles carry masses of feces covering parts or all of the body, which is called a "fecal shield". In general, the shield is thought to be a defense structure against natural enemies. However, some studies have suggested that defense effectiveness varies depending on the natural enemy. In this study, we used a fecal retention leaf beetle Ophrida xanthospilota (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), and 2 local generalist predators (an ant, Camponotus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and a stinkbug, Arma custos [Hemiptera: Pentatomidae]) as a system to test the hypothesis that the f

Environmental stress can disrupt multi-trophic interactions between plants and associated insects through modifying plant volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Dioecious plant species exhibit sexual dimorphism in metal accumulation and tolerance between males and females under heavy metal stress. However, whether these differences lead to sex-specific variations in VOC emissions and herbivore resistance across multi-trophic levels remains unclear. In this study, we used full-sibs of female and male poplars to investigate how soil cadmium (Cd) stress and plant sex influence emissions of co

Anti-predator strategies are significant components of adaptation in prey species. Aposematic prey are expected to possess effective defences that have evolved simultaneously with their warning colours. This study tested the hypothesis of the defensive function and ecological significance of the hard body in aposematic Pachyrhynchus weevils pioneered by Alfred Russel Wallace nearly 150 years ago. We used predation trials with Japalura tree lizards to assess the survivorship of 'hard' (mature) versus 'soft' (teneral) and 'clawed' (intact) versus 'clawless' (surgically removed) weevils. The ecol

Head lice, like many insects, produce a protective coating for their newly laid eggs that is essential to the survival of the species. Knowledge of the composition of the sheath, which is the glue by which the egg is attached to human hair, and the nit laying process could lead to production of agents that could be used to attack louse infestations by interfering with the normally protected environment of nymph development within the egg. The physical removal of nits has become an important part of treatment of head louse infestations given the "no-nit" policy in schools. Biochemical analysis

Contact urticaria refers to a wheal-and-flare response occurring on the application of chemicals to intact skin. Standard closed patch tests read at 48 hours after application yield misleading information; observations should be made instead using open patch tests 15 to 30 minutes after application. There are three major subdivisions of the syndrome: nonimmunologic cause (such as application of histamine), immunologic cause (immediate hypersensitivity), and uncertain cause (such as application of ammonium persulfate). Our patient had contact urticaria due to the insect repellent, diethyltoluam

Ticks are known to be able to transmit a broad spectrum of agents of diseases in cattle or sheep. Therefore, measurements are needed to keep ticks away from the body of any ruminant belonging to the agricultural life stock. The present study dealt with investigations to measure the efficacy of the insecticide deltamethrin (Butox® 7.5 pour on) against specimens of two important species (Ixodes ricinus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus). Four sheep and four young cattle were treated lege arte along the vertebral column with 10 ml Butox® (deltamethrin) per sheep or 30 ml Butox® per cattle. Day 7, 14,

BACKGROUND: In 2025, the UN estimated that 305 million people would need humanitarian aid, and by 2030, two-thirds of the poorest populations will reside in areas of fragility, conflict, and violence. When individuals are forcibly displaced into malaria endemic areas, the risk of severe disease and mortality can be high. Novel vector control tools suited to the emergency context, for which conventional interventions suffer from biological and operational limitations, are urgently needed to interrupt vector-borne disease transmission among the world's most vulnerable. This study aimed to evalua

Vector control is essential for eliminating malaria, a vector-borne parasitic disease responsible for over half a million deaths annually. Success of vector control programs hinges on community acceptance of products like long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). Communities in malaria-endemic regions often link LLIN efficacy to their ability to control indoor pests such as bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L. and Cimex hemipterus (F.)) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). Despite this, little is known about the potential repellent effects and toxicity of LLINs to bed bugs. Herein, we demonstrate for the fi

BACKGROUND: Imported fire ants are highly destructive invasive pests that damage agriculture and ecosystems. Their control largely depends on synthetic pesticides, which raise concerns about environmental contamination and resistance. This highlights the need for natural product-based alternatives.
RESULTS: Oregano essential oil from Origanum vulgare exhibited potent repellency against red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) and hybrid imported fire ants (S. invicta × S. richteri), with a minimum repellent effective dose (MRED) of 15.6 and 7.8 μg g-1, respectively. Gas chromatography-mass

The study investigated the knockdown and repellent efficacy of smoke from native plants, Vitex payos (Lour.) Merr., Peltophorum africanum Sond., and Adansonia digitata L., against malaria vectors in Bare ward, Mazowe district, Zimbabwe. Three to five-day-old An. gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) were exposed to smoke from the three plants over 150 minutes during knockdown tests. Mortality was scored after 24 hours. A randomized 4 x 4 Latin square design was used to assign plant smoke and control treatments to huts and nights during repellency tests. Repellency was estimated as percentage reduction in

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellents that drive mosquitoes away from treated areas, and odour-baited traps, that attract and kill mosquitoes, can be combined and work synergistically in a push-pull system. Push-pull systems have been shown to reduce house entry and outdoor biting rates of malaria vectors and so have the potential to control other outdoor biting mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti that transmit arboviral diseases. In this study, semi-field experiments were conducted to evaluate whether a push-pull system could be used to reduce bites from Aedes mosquitoes.

The mosquito Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (Theobald) is the principal vector for malaria in Latin-America. Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the key vector of four important arboviral diseases: dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya. Controlling larval stages to reduce the production of new adult mosquitoes is part of the integrated vector management strategies. However, there are few studies about the olfactory behavior on immature stages of mosquitoes, especially in An. pseudopunctipennis. In this work, we have evaluated the behavior of An. pseudopunctipennis and Ae. aegypti la

Methyl benzoate (MB) is a plant-derived volatile organic compound with insecticidal properties, but such activity has not been evaluated against the sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a major crop pest. In this study, we tested methyl benzoate control efficacy on B. tabaci infecting tomato plants in a greenhouse, specifically measuring contact and fumigant toxicity, as well as repellent activity. For direct spray applications of 0% (control), 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% MB onto tomato leaves infested with adults of B. tabaci (< 5-d-old), 2% MB showed the hi
