Self-reported functioning among patients with ultra-rare nemaline myopathy or a related disorder in Finland: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Nemaline myopathy (NM) and related disorders (NMr) form a heterogenous group of ultra-rare (1:50,000 live births or less) congenital muscle disorders. To elucidate the self-reported physical, psychological, and social functioning in the daily lives of adult persons with congenital muscle disorders, we designed a survey using items primarily from the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System, PROMIS®, and conducted a pilot study in patients with NM and NMr in Finland. The items were linked to International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) cat…

Assessing injury-related movement difficulties: A method for analyzing the association between functional limitations and social participation.

BACKGROUND: The conceptualization of disability has shifted from a medical to a social model with a consequent focus away from impairments and toward activities and participation. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) provides a common point of reference and a common language in a developing disability discourse. OBJECTIVES: We sought to apply a model for the measurement of disability based on the activity and participation constructs of the ICF to persons with movement difficulty as a result of injury-related causes. METHODS: Data from sample adults ag…

Integrating a biopsychosocial perspective: WHODAS 2.0 enhances functioning assessment in Parkinson's disease.

Functioning is a critical health indicator alongside mortality and morbidity, yet it remains under-assessed in Parkinson's disease (PD), where symptom-based scales predominate. Identifying functional limitations across multiple domains is essential to improve care and guide tailored interventions. The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), offers a biopsychosocial measure of disability applicable across conditions and cultures. This cross-sectional study aimed to describe …

Functioning in the fibromyalgia syndrome: validity and reliability of the WHODAS 2.0.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is both a challenging and disabling condition. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) classifies FMS as chronic primary pain, and it can negatively impact individuals' functioning including social, psychological, physical and work-related factors. Notably, while guidelines recommend a biopsychosocial approach for managing chronic pain conditions, FMS assessment remains clinical. The WHODAS 2.0 is a unified scale to measure disability in the light of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Thus, this stu…

[Experience with personalized medicine with respect to disability assessment in patients suffering from mental and behavioural disorders].

The article presents the outcomes of the new disability assessment paradigm, which was running for three years and concerns patients with mental and behavioural disorders. This paradigm for assessing the state of health, decrease in the working capacity, and disability in patients with mental and behavioural disorders has been asserted since 2010. It is based on the findings of the project entitled, "Advances in medical science reflected in functional health state assessment and working incapacity in relation to International Classification of Diseases and International Classification of Funct
