[Spontaneous recovery from cytomegalovirus pneumonia].

A 30-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus was admitted to our hospital because of a slight fever and diffuse interstitial shadows on a chest X-ray film. She had taken prednisolone (60 mg per day) at another hospital for six weeks. At the time of admission to our hospital, she had been treated with antituberculosis drugs (streptomycin, isoniazid, and rifampicin) for two weeks because of suspected miliary tuberculosis. Chest radiography on admission revealed diffuse nodular and micronodular shadows in the middle and lower lung fields on both sides. Examination of transbronchial lung

Immunoglobulin inclusions in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

The occurrence and characteristics of intracellular immunoglobulin inclusions in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are described. Lymphoma cells from three patients with immunoblastic sarcoma contained classic cytoplasmic, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive Russell bodies. Immunoperoxidase staining revealed monoclonal IgG (k) in two cases and a polyclonal pattern in the third case, where the tumor evolved from a reactive lesion. Unusual cytoplasmic inclusions were observed in the neoplastic cells of two patients with follicular center cell lymphoma. In one case large globular structures lacking a disti

Overflow urinary incontinence as an early manifestation of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder with highly heterogeneous clinical manifestations, often leading to misdiagnosis. Urinary incontinence as the initial and predominant symptom of NIID has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A Chinese male in his early seventies presented with an 8-year history of nocturnal urinary incontinence and a 4-year history of progressive memory loss. Detailed clinical, neuroimaging, electrophysiological, and genetic assessments were performed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed high-intensity sign

Nuclear and cytoplasmic huntingtin inclusions exhibit distinct biochemical composition, interactome and ultrastructural properties.

Despite the strong evidence linking the aggregation of the Huntingtin protein (Htt) to the pathogenesis of Huntington's disease (HD), the mechanisms underlying Htt aggregation and neurodegeneration remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the ultrastructural properties and protein composition of Htt cytoplasmic and nuclear inclusions in mammalian cells and primary neurons overexpressing mutant exon1 of the Htt protein. Our findings provide unique insight into the ultrastructural properties of cytoplasmic and nuclear Htt inclusions and their mechanisms of formation. We show that Htt in

Cytomegalovirus immediate-early 1 proteins form a structurally distinct protein class with adaptations determining cross-species barriers.

Restriction factors are potent antiviral proteins that constitute a first line of intracellular defense by blocking viral replication and spread. During co-evolution, however, viruses have developed antagonistic proteins to modulate or degrade the restriction factors of their host. To ensure the success of lytic replication, the herpesvirus human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) expresses the immediate-early protein IE1, which acts as an antagonist of antiviral, subnuclear structures termed PML nuclear bodies (PML-NBs). IE1 interacts directly with PML, the key protein of PML-NBs, through its core domain

No genetic evidence for the involvement of GGC repeat expansions of the NOTCH2NLC gene in Chinese patients with multiple system atrophy.

Recent studies have identified an expanded GGC repeat in the 5' untranslated region of the NOTCH2NLC gene as a possible pathogenic genetic cause of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease. Converging evidence verifying the presence of the same GGC repeat expansion in patients with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases has also received increased attention. Inspired by some of the clinical similarities between neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease and multiple system atrophy (MSA), we used repeat-primed PCR to explore the occurrence of GGC repeats in 3

Papillary carcinoma in thyroglossal duct cyst: Diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration cytology and immunocytochemistry.

Carcinoma associated with thyroglossal duct cyst (TDC) is extremely rare and when it occurs it is invariably papillary carcinoma. A 36-year-old man presented with a midline swelling in the upper part of neck, which was a cystic lesion with multiple septae in ultrasonogram, indicating a thyroglossal duct cyst. The CT scan findings also corroborated the ultrasound report. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears showed hemosiderin laden cyst macrophages and occasional papillary cluster of neoplastic cells with central psammoma body and rare intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions. The neoplastic cells re

Cytobrushing of the oral mucosa as a possible tool for early detection of testudinid herpesvirus in Horsfield's tortoises with nonspecific clinical signs.

Forty-five Horsfield's tortoises (Testudo horsfieldii; syn. Agrionemys horfieldii, Russian tortoise) belonging to different owners had decreased appetite and respiratory issues. Twenty-nine tortoises had epiphora, dyspnea, and white necrotic diphtheroid oral plaques (group G1). Ten of the remaining 16 tortoises had serious dehydration, appetite disorder, and depression (G2). The last 6 tortoises had only decreased appetite and moderate conjunctival discharge (G3). During the physical examination of all 45 tortoises, a cytologic sample and an oral swab for herpesvirus and Mycoplasma agassizii P

An outbreak of lethal adenovirus infection among different otariid species.

An outbreak of fatal fulminant hepatitis at a Japanese aquarium involved 3 otariids: a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), a South African fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) and a South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens). In a span of about a week in February 2012, 3 otariids showed diarrhea and were acutely low-spirited; subsequently, all three animals died within a period of 3 days. Markedly increased aspartate amino transferase and alanine amino transferase activities were observed. Necrotic hepatitis and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies in liver hepatocytes and intest…

Degeneration of the external cuneate nucleus in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (Machado-Joseph disease).

Owing to its anatomical connections, the external cuneate nucleus (ECU) plays a crucial role in processing proprioceptive input from the upp … strogliosis, and some of the few surviving neurons harbored one or even two ataxin-3-immunopositive intranuclear inclusion bodies. The findings of the present study suggest that (1) the ECU is among the consistent targets of the degenerative process underlying SCA3 and (2) interruption of the proprioceptive pathway at the level of the ECU contributes significantly to upper lim …

Two novel alphaherpesviruses associated with fatal disseminated infections in Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.

Two immature female bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were found stranded on the Atlantic coast of the USA. Necropsy and histopathologic examination of both dolphins demonstrated acute necrotizing lesions in multiple organ systems. Commonly seen in these lesions were cells with enlarged nuclei that contained single 4 to 6 microm diameter homogeneous eosinophilic inclusion bodies that were often surrounded by a clear halo. Ultrastructural examination revealed that intranuclear inclusions contained 90 to 110 nm diameter viral particles with electron-dense cores and hexagonal profiles. Vir

[Light and electron microscopic studies of calf kidneys after exposure to subtoxic lead levels].

Eight calves were fed from the fourth to the twentieth week of age a milk powder diet containing 40 mg lead acetate per kg dry substance. This is twice the lead concentration legally permitted. In average, each animal has daily taken up 0.834 mg lead per kg body weight. Eight calves were used as controls. The animals gained the usual fattening weights and did not show clinical symptoms. Beginning with week 14, increased levels of blood urea were encountered in the animals which received lead in their diet. Morphologically, severe renal lesions were found in these calves. The kidneys were incre
