PURPOSE: To characterize the proteome of the iris in primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG).
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, iris samples were obtained from surgical iridectomy of 48 adults with PACG and five normal controls. Peptides from iris were analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry on an Orbitrap Q Exactive Plus mass spectrometer. Verification of proteins of interest was conducted using selected reaction monitoring on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The main outcome was proteins with a log2 two-fold difference in expression in iris betwee…

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the anterior ocular segment in a pseudophakic eye with angle closure due to a plateau-like iris associated … ped acute primary angle closure. At that time, because the IOP remained elevated after a peripheral iridectomy, cataract extraction combined with goniosynechialysis was added. After the IOP decreased to within the normal range, a secondary intraocular lens was implanted outside the bag. On this admission, UBM and AS-OCT images showed angle closure caused by …

The Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society (APGS), in collaboration with the Academy of Asia-Pacific Professors of Ophthalmology (AAPPO), convened a panel of 18 international experts from 10 countries/territories to identify areas of controversy and establish consensus on diagnosing and managing Acute Primary Angle Closure Attack (APACA). APACA is a relatively common and potentially vision-threatening ocular emergency, particularly in Chinese and Asian populations. With timely and appropriate intervention, favorable outcomes could be achieved. However, with the current treatment protocol, two areas nee

Massive hyphaema presentation after a laser iridotomy is very rare. We report a 63-year-old man with ischaemic heart disease on dual antiplatelet therapy (aspirin plus ticagrelor) who was diagnosed as a primary angle-closure suspect and was to undergo a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser iridotomy at Centro Oftalmológico Virgilio Galvis, Floridablanca, Colombia in 2016. While performing the iridotomy in the left eye, active bleeding occurred that finally filled approximately 75% of the anterior chamber. Intraocular pressure (IOP) increased to 62 mmHg. Mannitol and a topical dorzola

Chromatic pupillometry is an emerging method for evaluating ocular health that relies upon the differential stimulation of rods, cones, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). Although it has been investigated in conditions affecting the outer or inner retina, there is a paucity of studies in conditions where the anterior chamber of the eye is affected. Primary angle closure suspects (PACS) are defined as eyes with narrow anterior chamber angles and intact retina. PACS patients are at risk of developing primary angle closure glaucoma and are prophylactically treated b

Most severe eye diseases and injuries ultimately require intervention by an ophthalmologist. The urgency of referral depends on various factors, including level of vision loss, duration of symptoms, and presence of comorbid diseases. Of special importance are five acute eye problems in which emergency management by primary care physicians can be critical to visual outcome: high-velocity injuries, chemical injuries, acute angle-closure glaucoma, arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, and central retinal artery occlusion. This paper will focus on emergencies in glaucoma, especially primary and sec

Malignant glaucoma is characterized by ciliary block or aqueous misdirection, shallowing of the anterior chamber with elevated intraocular p … llower and closer again. We diagnosed the patient with malignant glaucoma, performed hyaloid-zonulo-iridectomy, and administered 1% atropine eye drops postoperatively. As a result, the IOP was limited to a 10 mmHg range with an open angle and deep anterior chamber. Malignant glaucoma can be caused by immediate primary phacoemulsification for APAC.
