We have attempted to correlate the protective effect of furosemide with its ability to alter prostaglandin (PG) synthesis by the airway epithelium. The effect of the acidic phospholipase A2 (PLA2) from Vipera russelli venom on the rat aortic ring was studied and compared with that of acetylcholine (ACh). PLA2 induced relaxation of the aortic ring precontracted with noradrenaline (NA) in a dose-dependent manner. Removal of the endothelium did not reduce the relaxant effect of PLA2. Screening techniques utilizing enrichment cultures and rapid assay methods supported by automated or miniaturized methods are useful tools to detect new enzyme producers.
