BACKGROUND: Liver angiomyolipomas (AML) are mesenchymal neoplasms with an uncertain clinical behavior. The spectrum of presentation, imaging and histologic features, and outcomes were analyzed in all patients treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
METHODS: Demographics, disease, pathologic, treatment, and outcome-related variables for consecutive patients were reviewed retrospectively. All imaging studies obtained at presentation were reexamined, categorized, and compared using Fisher and Wilcoxon tests.
RESULTS: Between 1989 and 2010, 238 patients with AML were seen and 22 (9.3%

Conservative surgery was initially limited to patients with localized RCC present bilaterally or in a solitary kidney, in whom radical nephrectomy would necessitate immediate renal replacement therapy. Today, the widespread use of abdominal ultrasound as screening modality in patients with nonspecific or unrelated symptoms allows the detection of renal parenchymal tumors rarely seen before: asymptomatic, small and unilateral neoplasms, often surrounded by a thick and complete pseudocapsule. Global renal function and contralateral kidney are usually normal and the patients show good performance

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is defined as neoplasm resembling morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics of mature histiocytes. It is a rare form of lymphoid neoplasms. Despite advances in treatment and diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma, majority of cases had poor prognosis due to progressive nature of the disease. In the following article, all reported cases of histiocytic sarcoma in renal transplant patients are reviewed.
METHODS: In our literature review, all relevant reports were collected electronically by entering the necessary keywords. A Boolean approach using Medical

BACKGROUND: Most lung transplantation centers prefer triple immunosuppressive therapy with tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroids. However, to prevent complications and comorbidities caused by tacrolimus, replacing the drug with everolimus has been considered.
METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study investigating everolimus switch for different reasons. The population was divided into 3 groups: chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD), kidney impairment, and malignant neoplasm groups. We investigated whether we achieved the goal of the switch and the frequency of

BACKGROUND: Detailed analyses of mortality after upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding are lacking. Follow-up rarely extends beyond 30 days.
AIMS: Our aim was to analyze in-hospital and delayed 6-months mortality, identifying risk factors.
METHODS: This was a prospective study on patients with upper GI bleeding over 36 months. Clinical outcomes were in-hospital and delayed-6 month-mortality.
RESULTS: Four hundred and forty-none patients were included. Overall inpatient mortality was 9.8% but mortality directly related to bleeding was 5.1%. Patients who died presented lower systolic blood pre

An unusual case of 2 concurrent primary renal tumors within the same kidney is reported. A 70-year-old woman presented with gross hematuria when she was in the hospital for cerebral infarction. Excretory urography revealed a marked expansion of the right kidney with no renal function. CT scan showed a mass arising from the right kidney, the hydronephrotic right renal pelvis, and a mass in the lower right ureter. Selective renal angiogram showed marked neovascularity of the mass. There was an encasement of the intrarenal artery to the lower pole. Angiographic findings were highly suggestive of

We present a case of a 67 year old male with a cortical nodular tumour of the left kidney. During a year's follow-up with ultrasound and MRI, the tumour was seen to increase in size by 16-20 mm. The nodule was surgically removed. Microscopically it was well defined and unencapsulated, with a proliferation of typical fusiform cells of smooth muscle cell appearance, clumped around well vascularized areas. Immunohistochemically, the neoplasm was positive for muscle markers (smooth muscle actin, desmin and caldesmon) and melanocyte markers (HMB-45 and Melan A). Our case would appear to be a renal

Humoral hypercalcemia refers to the elevated blood calcium levels caused by neoplasms which release a bone resorptive substance into the circulation. Previously reported infants with malignant and benign solid tumors causing humoral hypercalcemia have presented with large abdominal masses. The case we describe, a hypercalcemic infant due to an occult parathyroid hormone-related protein-containing metanephric adenoma of the kidney, shows that radionuclide bone scanning can be a useful test to identify humoral hypercalcemia. Humoral hypercalcemia stemming from a soft tissue neoplasm should be ru

A 9-y-old, castrated male, domestic medium-hair cat diagnosed previously with chronic kidney disease developed anorexia and vomiting. Ultrasonography revealed abdominal effusion and a left renal perihilar mass. Cytologic evaluation of the peritoneal fluid and mass identified atypical epithelioid cells suspected to be of renal epithelial or possible mesothelial origin. Immunohistochemical (IHC) evaluation of a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded peritoneal fluid cell block indicated both pancytokeratin and vimentin expression in the atypical epithelioid cell population. With scanning electron mic

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), originally described in the pleura, is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical presentations and histopathological features. Over the years, SFTs have been reported in various anatomical locations, including soft tissues, visceral organs, and, uncommonly, the kidney. While SFTs primarily arise from the pleura, their occurrence in the kidney is an infrequent phenomenon, accounting for a minute fraction of all renal tumors. This case report presents a unique instance of a solitary fibrous tumor originating in the kidney, highlighting

A solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal cell neoplasm that can develop at any site. SFT of the kidney is extremely rare. Recently, we had a case of solitary fibrous tumour involving the left kidney in a 71-year-old female patient. The SFT was incidentally found by imaging modalities at the time of a physical workup. Computed tomography and retrograde pyelography showed a 4 × 3.5 × 4-cm nodular mass in the middle poles of the left kidney adjacent to the renal pelvis. A laparoscopic radical resection of the left kidney was performed. The tumour was well-circumscribed and composed o

An epidemic of a malignant neoplasm occurs in northern pike, Esox lucius L., from the Aland Islands of Finland. The neoplasm is morphologically similar to other pike hemic tumors reported in other areas of the world. Pike normal tissues showed evolutionary conservation with the mammalian intermediate filament proteins cytokeratin, desmin, vimentin, neurofilament protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein; tumor cells are positive for vimentin, suggesting that the neoplasm is of mesenchymal origin. Hemic tissue mononuclear cells undergo polyclonal stimulation by the known mammalian T- and B-l

Phyllodes tumor is a rare fibroepithelial neoplasm of the breast. This tumor tends to spread by hematogenous route, with common metastatic sites in the lungs, bones, and liver. Metastases to the pleura, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, and adrenal gland are rare. We present a case of a 52-year-old lady with malignant phyllodes tumor of breast undergone local tumor resection, followed by solitary lung metastasis with lobectomy, and subsequently diagnosed of multiple new metastatic sites in pleura, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal gland, and bone detected on 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose positro

Seventeen cases of peritonitis due to rupture of a pyonephrosis have been reported. The majority of these cases occur secondary to renal stones. Only two cases of ruptured pyonephrosis with concurrent kidney neoplasm have been described and only one of these presented as an acute peritonitis. In this presentation we discuss an unusual case of a 68 year old man with a chronic history of bilateral nephrolithiasis and recent pyonephrosis. He presented acutely with peritonitis and was later found to have a carcinosarcoma of the kidney. The case highlights the importance of recognizing the possibil

Papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity is a rare, newly identified subtype of papillary renal cell carcinoma believed to originate from the distal renal tubules. It is characterized by distinct histomorphological features and an associated immunophenotype. Contrast-enhanced scans usually do not exhibit a rapid wash-in and wash-out enhancement pattern, and this tumor is generally associated with a favorable overall prognosis. This study reports a case of papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity in a male patient in his 50 s who was admitted with recurrent left lumbar pain and disc

DICER1 syndrome (OMIM 606241, 601200) is a rare autosomal dominant familial tumor predisposition disorder with a heterozygous DICER1 germline mutation. The most common tumor seen clinically is the pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB), a lung neoplasm of early childhood which is classified on its morphologic features into four types (IR, I, II and III) with tumor progression over time within the first 4-5 years of life from the prognostically favorable cystic type I to the unfavorable solid type III. Following the initial report of PPB, its association with other cystic neoplasms was demonstrated in

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent of the hereditary diseases affecting the kidney but it can also be associated with cysts in the pancreas, liver, arachnoid, seminal vesicles. In particular, ADPKD plus adult polycystic liver disease (APLD) is defined as Potter type III. In the literature, the association of malignant neoplasm with APLD and ADPKD is extremely rare. We have found only nine cases. Only one report described multiple gastric carcinomas associated with Potter type III cystic disease. We described a case of a man suffering from ADPKD and APLD p

Cutaneous mast cell tumor (MCT) is one of the most frequent cutaneous neoplasms of dogs and may vary from well-differentiated to aggressive tumors with metastasis. The authors retrospectively described the gross and histologic aspects of metastatic MCT in 49 dogs. Primary MCT was most commonly identified in the inguinal region (14/35; 40%), and at necropsy multiple, cutaneous nodules were frequently reported (23/49; 47%). All primary MCT were classified as high-grade neoplasms, and metastases involved the lymph nodes (47/49; 96%), spleen (33/49; 67%), liver (29/49; 59%), bone marrow (20/49; 41

Three groups of patients were reviewed. Primary carcinomas were found in donors kidneys of 47 recipients. In 30 instances a tumor was present at harvesting. When a neoplasm was removed immediately pretransplantation or early posttransplantation there were no recurrences in 14 recipients. In another two instances, a tumor was not removed or was incompletely excised pretransplantation and both recipients died of metastases. Fourteen other patients received kidneys from donors in whom the opposite kidney had a malignancy. Thirteen remained tumor-free and one had allograft nephrectomy for rejectio

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are uncommon neoplasms comprising approximately 1%-2% of all pancreatic malignancies. They display a wide clinical spectrum ranging from indolent, well-differentiated Grade 1 lesions to aggressive, poorly differentiated tumors. While metastatic spread to the liver is relatively common, vascular invasion and tumor thrombus formation are exceedingly rare in low-grade NETs. Here, we present an unusual postoperative case of a Grade 1 PNET with tumor recurrence, kidney infiltration, and tumor thrombus involving the left renal vein and extending into the gona
