BACKGROUND: Acute diarrhea is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Oral rehydration salts (ORS) have lowered mortality without having an effect on the duration or severity of diarrhea. The salivary lactobacillus count was assessed during school attendance among 1734 7-15-yr-old children and related to the number of teeth erupting within each age group. The prevalence of extremely low lactobacillus counts (less than or equal to 10(3)) was inversely correlated with the number of erupting teeth (P less than 0.001) but the differences were small. High counts differed only by 7% between ages with the lowest and the highest mean number of erupting or exfoliating teeth tend to elevate the lactobacillus count in individuals. On a population level the effect is small.

This is a study of the modifications caused by acetylsalicylic acid and CuII (aspirinate)4 in the speed with which phagocytized bacteria disappear from polymorphonuclears (PMN) of the peritoneal exudate of guinea pigs. Acetylsalicylic acid inhibits the normal processes that cause the disappearance of the phagocytized bacteria; CuII (aspirinate)4, on the contrary, at low concentration (5 10(-6)) and during the first 45 minutes, causes an evident increase in the speed of disappearance of bacteria from PMN.
