The identification of the larvae of African Simulium.

Identification of the larval stages of African Simulium-vectors of onchocerciasis-is becoming increasingly important. In this paper attention is drawn to the principal morphological structures that are of value for identification and illustrations are given to indicate the various characters mentioned. The author provides an identification key to the larvae of the different species-groups of African Simulium and to the larvae of those species of most importance to man, and also presents a tentative key by which a larva may be placed in the probable instar of its development.

Cryopreservation of Anopheles gambiae Larvae.

Mosquitoes remain a significant global health concern due to their role in transmitting deadly diseases including malaria, dengue, and yello … ere, we report a cryopreservation protocol that results in the recovery of viable Anopheles gambiae larvae. After thawing, 82% of larvae showed signs of viability, including wriggling and mouth brush movements. Approximately 15% further exhibited coordinated swimming behavior. Although post-thaw survival was limited to 24 h, this study provides the firs …

Anisakid larva mimicking a gastric subepithelial lesion: an unexpected histopathological diagnosis.

Anisakidosis is a fish-borne zoonosis caused by the ingestion of live infective anisakid nematode larvae present in raw or undercooked seafood. Cases presenting as a gastric subepithelial lesion with histopathological confirmation are rare. Here we describe a 71-year-old asymptomatic woman whose screening esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed a subepithelial lesion measuring <10 mm in the gastric body, covered by intact mucosa and suspected to be a leiomyoma. Bite-on-bite biopsy unexpectedly revealed anisakid nematode larvae. The patient reported habitual sushi consumption. This case highlights th…

Inhibitory Effects of Tenebrio molitor Larva Trypsin Hydrolysate on Androgenetic Alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss, with a high prevalence worldwide. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential of Tenebrio molitor larva trypsin hydrolysate (TMTH), an insect-derived bioactive hydrolysate, as a functional ingredient candidate for AGA. In vitro and in vivo assessments demonstrated that TMTH promoted human hair dermal papilla (HDP) cell proliferation, restored β-catenin expression, and alleviated dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced inhibition. In a testosterone propionate (TP)-induced alopecia mouse model, oral TMTH administration increase…

A case of larva migrans representing a pitfall in oral diagnosis.

The present work reports a case of a female patient complaining of itching and painful lesions affecting the oral mucosa for 7 months. Buccal and lip mucosa showed swelling and erythema, with serpiginous tracks. The patient was diagnosed with oral larva migrans, and the lesions resolved after ivermectin administration. At 18-month follow-up, no sign of recurrence was observed. Larva migrans can represent a pitfall in oral diagnosis and a stressful condition for the patient. Oral health care providers should be aware of this and keep this disease in mind as a possible differential diagnosis in …

Description of the larva of Cybisterlewisianus Sharp, 1873 (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Cybistrinae).

We describe for the first time, the larvae of Cybister (Cybister) lewisianus Sharp, 1873, an endangered species of diving beetle in Japan, emphasizing the chaetotaxy of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphi. Cybisterlewisianus larvae are characterized by a longer third article of antenna 3 than the sum of the first and second articles; rounded apex of parietal setae 1-3; labium seta 8 absent; elongated trochanter seta 4, not multi-branched; rounded apex of abdominal setae 1, 12, and 13 (instar I); narrow lateral projections of the frontoclypeus; pro…

Roles for Microglia in Cryptococcal Brain Dissemination in the Zebrafish Larva.

Cryptococcal infection begins in the lungs, but yeast cells subsequently access the bloodstream, from which they can reach the central nervous system (CNS). The resulting meningoencephalitis is the most common presentation and is very difficult to treat. How this fungus interacts with the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and establishes growth in the brain parenchyma remains a central question in fungal pathogenesis. We and others have developed the zebrafish larva as a model host for cryptococcosis and demonstrated that hematogenous CNS infection is replicated in this model. Here, we have used this …

A Unique Case of Cutaneous Larva Migrans and Asymptomatic Löeffler's Syndrome.

Cutaneous larva migrans is a fairly common parasitic skin disease typically found in more tropical climates such as the southeastern United States, with the most commonly encountered organism known as the hookworm, Ancylostoma braziliense. Löeffler's syndrome is a rare pulmonary manifestation with vague diagnostic criteria but frequently characterized by diffuse migratory pulmonary infiltrates on imaging studies with accompanying serum eosinophilia. Here, we present a unique case of Löeffler's syndrome secondary to cutaneous larva migrans.

Hepatic larva migrans presenting with upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage: A case report.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) occurs because of a host inflammatory response to the migrating larvae of a nematode. Patients usually present with fever, hepatomegaly and abdominal pain; vascular arterial complications are uncommon. A 19-year female presented with fever, jaundice, abdominal discomfort and melena. Computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple discrete, clustered, complex hepatic cystic lesions consistent with VLM, along with an arterial pseudoaneurysm from the right hepatic artery which was managed with endovascular coil embolisation.

The visceral larva migrans caused by Toxocara canis: a case report.

Hepatic toxocarosis is caused by the dog´s roundworm, Toxocara canis. Responsible for an eosinophilic inflammatory syndrome causing liver damage that can be detected on ultrasound, computed tomography and sometimes magnetic resonance imaging. We report the case of a nine-year-old child, living in countryside, with a notion of cohabitation with canids. He presented a digestive symptomatology revealed by abdominal pain, with a hemeosinophilia in the hemogram. The etiological assessment of hyper eosinophilia objectified a positive Toxocara canisserology. The imaging assessment in search of digest
