OBJECTIVES: We report two cases of cutaneous larva migrans in pregnant women.
METHODS: Due to pregnancy, systemic therapy was not considered. Limited efficacy of cryotherapy and unavailability of topical thiabendazole led to the in-office preparation of 10% albendazole ointment.
RESULTS: Application of this compound thrice daily under occlusion for 10 days led to complete resolution without recurrence. No safety signals were reported during pregnancy follow-up and until birth.
CONCLUSION: Topical albendazole may be an effective, safe, and painless treatment of cutaneous larva migrans. Large…

Cutaneous Larva Migrans (CLM) is a helminthic infection that is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. It is caused by zoonotic hookworms, predominantly the Ancylostoma species, which infrequently infect humans. Hookworms primarily inhabit the small intestine of canines and felines, where adult worms release eggs that are excreted in the host's feces into the environment. Human infections occur through direct contact with contaminated soil, with humans serving as dead-end hosts for parasites. Clinically, CLM presents as erythematous, serpiginous, and intensely pruritic cutaneous erupti…

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) results from hookworm larvae infestation, mainly Ancylostoma braziliense or Ancylostoma caninum. It is common in Sub-Saharan Africa, often acquired through soil contact, especially in sandy beaches, manifesting as serpiginous, erythematous and intensely pruritic tracts within the epidermis, and presenting with diverse clinical appearances. Diagnosis is mostly clinical; however, dermoscopy can enhance diagnostic accuracy and distinction from mimics. The current body of literature is deficient in its representation of dermoscopic data for CLM in Black patients. This…

Cutaneous larva migrans is a tropical dermatosis acquired through the helminthic infection. It is caused by penetration of animal hookworm larva in patient with history of walking barefoot on soil or beaches or with history of travel to tropical areas. It usually presents clinically as a pruritic serpiginous lesion with a trailing. Here, we report three cases who presented as asymptomatic to pruritic thread like serpiginous lesion on cutaneous examination. Cutaneous larva migrans was diagnosed clinically and proper treatment was done with complete regression of manifestations within a week. Al…

Toxocara canis is an important zoonotic roundworm distributed worldwide. The infective larvae of T. canis are one of the causes of visceral larva migrans (VLM), a clinical syndrome in humans. Diagnosing VLM is difficult, and the differential diagnosis of the larval development stage is limited. Therefore, this experimental research aimed to diagnose T. canis larvae using a molecular method, not only in liver tissue, which is the most commonly affected tissue, but also in the limb muscles, lungs and brain tissues. For this purpose, 24 BALB/c mice were infected with 1000 embryonated T. canis egg…

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is one of the clinical syndromes of human toxocariasis. We report a case of hepatic VLM presenting preprandial malaise and epigastric discomfort in a 58-year-old woman drinking raw roe deer blood. The imaging studies of the abdomen showed a 74-mm hepatic mass featuring hepatic VLM. Anti-Toxocara canis immunoglobulin G (IgG) was observed in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot. Despite anthelmintic treatment, the patient complained of newly developed cough and skin rash with severe eosinophilia. Hepatic lesion increased in size. The patient und…

The presence of Visceral Larva Migrans (VLM) in a patient is reported. A 57-year- old woman suffering from right upper abdominal and suprapubic pain referred into a clinic in Khorramabad, Lorestan Province, Iran. A cystoscopy was performed and biopsy was taken. The light microscopic study showed a couple of larvae as well as mononuclear inflammatory cell- infiltration. Because occurrence of VLM is potentially problem in rural areas, it is recommended that an educational program to be initiated to prevent and control VLM infection in both rural and urban people. Clinicians also should consider …

The number of cases of visceral larva migrans caused by the pig ascarid, Ascaris suum has recently been increasing. We have encountered two cases of visceral larva migrans due to A. suum with a nodular shadow on the chest radiograph and eosinophilia in the peripheral blood. Patient 1 was a 26-year-old man who had been admitted to our hospital for an elective minor operation. His chest radiology and chest computed tomography revealed a nodule in the left lung field. Peripheral blood eosinophil counts and serum IgE values were elevated. Radiological abnormality disappeared without treatment. Pat…

We discuss the pathophysiology and epidemiology of Toxocara catis infection complicated by visceral larval migrans . We describe a previously healthy 19-month-old white male child found dead in bed by his mother. He had what was thought to be an upper respiratory infection for several days. The child had eosinophilic hepatitis and myocarditis complicating visceral larval migrans due to Toxocara catis infection from the family cat. We discuss the pathologic and clinical aspects of visceral larval migrans due to of Toxocara catis infection.
