We present a genome assembly from a female specimen of Ectoedemia decentella (Sycamore-seed Pygmy; Arthropoda; Insecta; Lepidoptera; Nepticulidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 418.14 megabases. Most of the assembly (99.59%) is scaffolded into 31 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the W and Z sex chromosomes. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 15.25 kilobases.

Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff, a predatory stinkbug, has garnered much attention as a biological control against Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera pests across various crops. The continuous and high-quality supply of prey is essential for its large scale rearing and commercialization. This study investigated the life history and population performance of E. furcellata fed on Lepidoptera prey, Bombyx mori larvae or on Coleoptera prey, Tenebrio molitor larvae under controlled conditions. Using age-stage two-sex life table methodology, we evaluated key developmental parameters and population…

Fluid-feeding insects ingest a variety of liquids, which are present in the environment as pools, films, or confined to small pores. Studies of liquid acquisition require assessing mouthpart structure and function relationships; however, fluid uptake mechanisms are historically inferred from observations of structural architecture, sometimes unaccompanied with experimental evidence. Here, we report a novel method for assessing fluid-uptake abilities with butterflies (Lepidoptera) and flies (Diptera) using small amounts of liquids. Insects are fed with a 20% sucrose solution mixed with fluoresc…

Despite the nearly worldwide distribution of Lepidoptera, there are few species with clear documentation of adverse reactions in humans. Most syndromes caused by Lepidoptera are consequences of direct contact with the hairs or setae of caterpillars. In most instances, the adverse effects caused by moth and caterpillars are self-limited and the treatment is based on the removal of hairs, application of topical antipruritics and, in some cases, the use of oral antihistamines. However, in the case of envenoming by South American Lonomiaobliqua caterpillars, the antilonomic serum produced at Insti…

Waterfowl use webbed feet to swim underwater. It has been suggested that the triangular shape of the webbed foot functions as a lift-generating delta wing rather than a drag-generating oar. To test this idea, we studied the hydrodynamic characteristics of a diving duck's (Aythya nyroca) foot. The foot's time varying angles-of-attack (AoAs) during paddling were extracted from movies of ducks diving vertically in a water tank. Lift and drag coefficients of 3D-printed duck-foot models were measured as a function of AoA in a wind-tunnel; and the near-wake flow dynamics behind the foot model was ch

The systematics of Annelida has repeatedly been changed based on morphological data, but more recently established transcriptomic approaches yielded a stable and widely accepted phylogenetic tree, placing Magelonidae and Oweniidae as sister group to all remaining annelids. This led to an increased interest in these groups in terms of morphological traits and their phylogenetic significance. As one of the most characteristic morphological characters of annelids, the chaetae of Magelonidae are well investigated regarding their shape, but phylogenetically relevant aspects like their general arran

The nodes formed by the mid-ventral tracheal anastomoses in abdominal segments 3-6 are modified into conspicuous glandular organs in larvae of certain Lepidoptera. They comprise clusters of extremely large cells penetrated by an extensive lacunar system opening onto the tracheal wall. These cells appear to sequester substances from the haemolymph which may be conjugated with a lipoid synthesized within them and the product excreted into the lacunar system, ultimately passing into the tracheal lumen.

Across the planet, angiosperm diversification has been shaped by palaeoclimates and biotic interactions, particularly with pollinators, leav … -pollinated species. Resolving insect pollination into six syndromes revealed strong heterogeneity: lepidoptera-pollination was most strongly associated with warmest palaeotemperatures, bumblebee and wasp-pollination under intermediate temperatures, and fly, lepidoptera and beetle-pollination under coldest temperatures. Paleotemperature signatures correlated …

In French Guayana, climatic and geographic conditions enhance development of numerous fungal, parasitic and microbial skin diseases. The most particular infectious diseases of this French department are lobomycosis, chromomycosis (Phialophora pedrosoi), creeping disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, mycobacterial ulcus (Mycobacterium ulcerans) and papular dermatitis caused by nettling hairs of lepidoptera (Hylesia urticans). The occurence of these skin diseases is demonstrative of pathological ecology of the Amazonian country.

A classification for crystal protein genes of Bacillus thuringiensis is presented. Criteria used are the insecticidal spectra and the amino acid sequences of the encoded proteins. Fourteen genes are distinguished, encoding proteins active against either Lepidoptera (cryI), Lepidoptera and Diptera (cryII), Coleoptera (cryIII), or Diptera (cryIV). One gene, cytA, encodes a general cytolytic protein and shows no structural similarities with the other genes. Toxicity studies with single purified proteins demonstrated that every described crystal protein is characterized by a highly specific, and s…
