A useful method for the diagnosis of acute rupture of the lateral ligament of the ankle joint is presented. Twenty-three patients with ruptures of the lateral ligament of the ankle joint were treated surgically with suture of the lateral ligaments of the ankle. Accurate preoperative diagnosis with stress films and arthrography under local anesthesia of the ankle joint is imperative. No instances of infection or other complications were observed. All patients achieved a normal range of ankle function within three to six months. Radiograhs of the injured ankle in the forced inversion position fo…

Multiligamentous knee injuries are challenging to treat and diagnose. Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries are commonly found in the constellation of injuries included in a multiligamentous knee injury and are caused by a posteriorly directed force on the proximal tibia with relation to the femoral condyles. A thorough history and physical examination should be performed to evaluate for associated neurovascular injuries and associated ligamentous, chondral, or bony injuries. Nonsurgical management is reserved for patients who are critically ill or have very low activity demands. Surgical

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the clinical outcome and findings of ligamentous repair for acute posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI) of the elbow.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients underwent lateral collateral ligament repair for acute PLRI. Ten male and nine female patients were observed for a mean of 9 months; their mean age was 46 years (14-70 years). The mean time from injury to operation was 8.1 days (1-18 days). The lateral pivot shift and varus stress test results were positive for all cases. We repaired the lateral ulnar collateral ligament with Ethibond in 6 cases and Bio-FAS

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is not merely a passive stabilizer of the knee, yet its injuries are still commonly treated as a mechanical problem despite growing evidence implicating the central nervous system (CNS). This mini-review highlights the ACL as a critical sensory organ, housing mechanoreceptors that provide afferent feedback regarding the knee position. We further examine evidence across peripheral, cortical, and supraspinal levels to characterize CNS involvement in ACL injury.

PURPOSE: Extrinsic ligament injury is necessary for scapholunate (SL) diastasis to occur in SL ligament injury. Prior studies demonstrate an association between dorsal extrinsic ligament injury and SL diastasis, but it is unclear what is the importance of volar extrinsic injury. This study aimed to characterize injury to the dorsal intercarpal ligament (DIC), dorsal radicarpal ligament (DRC), volar extrinsic ligaments (LRL/SRL/RSC), and scaphotrapezotrapezial (STT) ligaments to determine what extrinsic ligament injuries are independently associated with SL diastasis.
METHODS: We conducted a r…

True broad ligament leiomyomas are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all fibroids, and pose significant diagnostic and surgical challenges due to their atypical location and proximity to vital pelvic structures. We report a case of a 3.4 kg true broad ligament leiomyoma presenting as an abdominopelvic mass, initially suspected to be an ovarian neoplasm. Preoperative imaging was inconclusive, and a definitive diagnosis was made intraoperatively. Surgical excision required meticulous dissection to avoid injury to the ureters and iliac vessels. This case highlights the importance of differenti

BACKGROUND: Numerous surgical reconstructive techniques have been described for chronic scapholunate and lunotriquetral interosseous ligament instability.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 16 consecutive patients who underwent bone-ligament-bone reconstruction for scapholunate or lunotriquetral intraosseous ligament predynamic and dynamic instability at a single tertiary care institution from 2013 to 2019. Clinical and radiographic outcomes, and complications, were recorded.
RESULTS: Eleven patients had bone-ligament-bone reconstruction for scapholunate ligament injuries and five

Foot pain is a frequent cause of lameness in horses and can involve multiple structures within the hoof. The T-ligament (an anatomical structure connecting the synovium of the distal interphalangeal joint, the digital flexor tendon sheath and the navicular bursa) is poorly described. Five pairs of equine cadaver distal forelimbs were collected from a slaughterhouse. Sagittal sections (medial, middle and lateral) were obtained and processed with Haematoxylin Eosin Safran, Unna's Orcein, and Picrosirius red stains. Histological assessment revealed that the T-ligament was covered by the surroundi

INTRODUCTION: The absence of the cruciate ligament is a rare pathology which is described as a congenital entity often being bilateral and i … is frustrane. If however reconstructive surgery is done in cruciate ligament aplasia both cruciate ligaments need to be reconstructed. After isolated ACL reconstruction the tibia might be fixed posteriorly, leading to extension problems and severe patellofemoral pain as seen in our case.

Aplasia of the anterior cruciate ligament is a rare condition and is usually associated with other abnormalities of the lower extremities. We report aplasia of the anterior cruciate ligament with a compensating posterior cruciate ligament in a 15-year-old boy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction combine … s when compared with preoperative scores (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: For multiple injuries of the knee ligaments, an arthroscope with limited open repair and reconstruction of the knee ligament can avoid open joint chamber, reduce postoperative articular adhesion, and encourage the joint function recovery.

BACKGROUND: Several procedures for combined rupture of both anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in multiple-ligament knee injuries (MLKIs) have been reported. However, the clinical outcome of these treatments remains controversial.
HYPOTHESIS: Postoperative knee stability and clinical outcomes in patients who underwent simultaneous bicruciate reconstruction would be comparable with those that underwent bicruciate reconstruction with collateral ligament surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted w

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical treatment of concomitant medial collateral ligament (MCL) in the setting of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) increases the risk of graft failure. Few published cases of medial complex reconstruction combined with ACLR with no clear consensus on the optimal technique to treat these complex injuries.
INDICATIONS: A female patient aged 41 years, with failure of ACLR in 2009 and 2 revisions in 2013 and 2014, associated with concomitant nontreated MCL and posterior oblique ligament (POL) injury. Physical examination showed valgus test laxity grade III at 30°

OBJECTIVES: We have analyzed the elbow ligaments in humans and chimpanzees in order to identify differences that may be related to the use of the upper limbs in these two species. Specifically, we expected to find adaptations to arboreal locomotion and knuckle-walking in chimpanzees and adaptations to non-weight-bearing manual activities in humans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We dissected seven upper limbs from extant humans and seven from common chimpanzees and performed anatomical and qualitative analyses of the elbow ligaments. Subsequently, we calculated the absolute and relative size of the m…
