Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor VEGFR-2 in the regulation of corneal neovascularization and wound healing.

PURPOSE: To study the change in expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor VEGFR-2 in the rabbit cornea and limbus following a penetrating, central corneal alkali burn. The influence of different cells on VEGF and VEGFR-2 expression was studied by excluding granulocytes from the wound area. METHODS: Fourteen New Zealand white rabbits were subjected to a penetrating, 5-mm diameter, central corneal alkali burn in one eye under general anaesthesia. Seven of the rabbits were given injections of fucoidin for 36 hours. The rabbits were killed after 36 hours and the cor

In Vivo Optical Coherence Elastography Unveils Spatial Variation of Human Corneal Stiffness.

OBJECTIVE: The mechanical properties of corneal tissues play a crucial role in determining corneal shape and have significant implications in vision care. This study aimed to address the challenge of obtaining accurate in vivo data for the human cornea. METHODS: We have developed a high-frequency optical coherence elastography (OCE) technique using shear-like antisymmetric (A0)-mode Lamb waves at frequencies above 10 kHz. RESULTS: By incorporating an anisotropic, nonlinear constitutive model and utilizing the acoustoelastic theory, we gained quantitative insights into the influence of cornea

Corneal hemangiosarcoma in a cat.

A 10 year-old castrated male Domestic Short-hair cat with a history of chronic bilateral keratitis was referred for assessment of a red, elevated mass involving the left cornea. The rapid growth of the mass, over a month period in combination with pronounced vascularization and invasion of the corneal surface suggested an aggressive inflammatory or neoplastic process. Following keratectomy, the lesion was diagnosed histopathologically as a hemangiosarcoma. The tumor recurred locally within 3 weeks and enucleation was performed. Histopathologic examination of the globe confirmed the diagnosis a

Protection of corneal epithelial stem cells prevents ultraviolet A damage during corneal collagen cross-linking treatment for keratoconus.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cross-linking of the cornea is usually carried out at a young age as a treatment to manage ectasia. The corneal limbal region contains delicate long-lived stem cells, which could potentially be deleteriously affected by Ultraviolet A (UV-A) radiation. Damage to these stem cells may not demonstrate as a clinical problem for many years subsequent to cross-linking treatment. UV-A radiation is known to have potential mutagenic effects upon mammalian DNA and can result in cancer. METHODS: Cultured corneal epithelial cells and ex vivo corneal tissue were treated with the standard c

Tenonplasty: a new surgical approach for the treatment of severe eye burns.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In the acute stage of most severe eye burns, the primary goal is survival of the globe. Initial tissue destruction may lead to extensive necrosis of the conjunctiva and underlying tissue down to the fornices, with resulting ischemia. These circumstances may cause a polymorphonuclear cell response, with resulting corneo-scleral ulceration and early melting of the globe. To reestablish the ocular surface, Tenonplasty was performed as a plastic procedure to reconstruct the conjunctival matrix of the globe up to the limbus. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Vital Tenon's sheets from

Spatially selective multiphoton photothermolysis guided by reflectance confocal microscopy for precise vessel closure in the mouse eye limbus.

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is characterized by abnormal vessel growth into the cornea, often impairing vision. Conventional laser therapies for CNV lack precision and risk collateral damage. We developed a multiphoton photothermolysis (MPP) approach using femtosecond (fs) laser-based two-photon absorption guided by real-time reflectance confocal microscopy. Two MPP laser treatment configurations were implemented: dual lasers for imaging (785 nm CW) and treatment (830 nm fs), and a single fs laser for both functions. We demonstrated that in the mouse eye limbus, MPP achieved selective ves

Technological advances shaping scleral lenses: the Boston ocular surface prosthesis in patients with glaucoma tubes and trabeculectomies.

The Boston Ocular Surface Prosthesis (BOS-P) (Boston Foundation for Sight, Needham, MA) is a fluid-ventilated rigid gas-permeable scleral lens that is utilized for the treatment of irregular corneal astigmatism and severe ocular surface disease. Recent reports have highlighted the utility of the BOS-P as a therapeutic device in cases of persistent epithelial defects, corneal neovascularization, ocular graft versus host disease, and exposure keratopathy. Patients with significant cornea disease might also have glaucoma, and those who have undergone glaucoma surgery, which typically disrupts the

Morphological appearance of the healing corneal endothelium.

We studied endothelial cell patterns in both the central and the superior regions of the cornea in 43 cases of cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. During the early postoperative period, the central endothelial cells maintained their preoperative appearance. The endothelium within 3 to 4 mm of the superior limbus, however, demonstrated large dark areas where no cell outlines were visible, bounded by large cells. During the late postoperative period, there was an increase in the size and a reduction in the density of the central endothelial cells. In the periphery the previous
