OBJECTIVE: The impact of C5 palsy on quality of life (QOL) and its relationship with recovery and overall well-being remain poorly understood. In this study, the authors aimed to examine the effects of postoperative C5 palsy on upper extremity function and QOL in patients undergoing cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (C-OPLL) surgery, using both objective clinical assessments and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Additionally, this study aimed to explore the correlation between residual C5 palsy and QOL over a 2-year period.
METHODS: This retrospective study

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To characterise patients admitted to a UK tertiary centre with OPLL over a 10-year period.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: OPLL is a progressive degenerative condition that can lead to myelopathy. Incidence of OPLL is increasing in Caucasian populations due to increased alcohol consumption, smoking, increased body mass, reduced exercise, and glucose intolerance. This questions the traditional belief that Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (OPLL) is primarily a disease of East and South-East Asians.
METHODS: A retrospective re

White cord syndrome (WCS) is a rare but serious postoperative complication after spinal decompression surgery. Risk factors such as advanced age, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), and major surgery may have predisposed this patient to develop WCS. This report discusses a 72-year-old Hispanic male patient with cervical stenosis due to OPLL who underwent posterior cervical decompression and fusion. After laminectomy and decompression were done, neuromonitoring signals decreased significantly. Despite intraoperative interventions after neuromonitoring signals decreased (

Background Although the correlation between reduced skin thickness and reduced bone density has been investigated, no study has evaluated skin thickness and osteoproliferative diseases, including ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). Methodology This retrospective cohort study consisted of 99 consecutive patients aged ≥60 years treated for spinal surgery at our hospital between January 2022 and March 2023. Skin thickness was measured at the dorsal side of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae on the sagittal cross

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a condition comprising ectopic bone formation from spinal ligaments. This disease is a leading cause of myelopathy in the Asian population. However, the molecular mechanism underlying OPLL and efficient preventive interventions remain unclear. Here, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing and revealed that type I interferon (IFN) signaling was activated in the ossified ligament of patients with OPLL. We also observed that IFN-β stimulation promoted the osteogenic differentiation of preosteoblasts in vitro and activated the ossificat

Although previous studies indicate that changes in cervical alignment after laminoplasty and dynamic factors influence surgical outcomes of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), the relationship between the surgical outcomes, the distance between the kyphosis-line (K-line) and OPLL, and dynamic factors have not yet been quantitatively evaluated. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the relationship between ΔK-line distance and surgical outcomes in cases of laminoplasty for OPLL of the cervical spine. We retrospectively reviewed 46 consecutive patients

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid leakage (CSFL) is one of the most common complications after posterior transarticular osteotomy and circumferential decompression (CD) for the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in the thoracic spine. Predicting CSFL preoperatively would be of great value to surgeons. The aim of this study was to discover the factors that can predict CSFL prior to CD and incorporate them into a predictive model.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients with OPLL who underwent posterior transarticular osteotomy and CD at Peking University International Hospital were d

STUDY DESIGN: A sex- and age-matched case-control study and a cross-sectional study.
OBJECTIVE: In our previous study, patients with early-onset (<50 years of age) ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) had distinct features such as morbid obesity, a high prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases, and diffuse ossified lesions mainly affecting the thoracic spine. Our goals were to determine whether early-onset OPLL patients have unbalanced dietary habits and to identify nutritional factors associated with OPLL exacerbation.
METHODS: In Study 1, the simple brief-type self-ad

The purpose was to quantify the effect of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on balance and jump-landing performance and bilateral asymmetries. Among 500 collegiate athletes who performed a reaching test and a double-leg counter-movement jump-landing test at baseline, 8 male and 6 female athletes suffered ACL injuries. In the follow-up, they performed the reaching test 3 and 6 months after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and the jump-landing test 6 months after ACLR. Less reaching distances for the injured leg and increased reaching distance asymmetries were observed 3 and 6 months after ACL

BACKGROUND: Both anterior decompression and fusion (ADF) and laminoplasty (LAMP) are frequently used for the treatment of cervical myelopathy due to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). However, some controversies still remained in surgical options. We investigated whether ADF had better neurological outcome than LAMP in the treatment of cervical myelopathy due to OPLL. Secondary outcomes included operation time, blood loss, rate of complication and reoperation.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials database were searched to identify pot

PURPOSE: The recovery rate of Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score with K-line (-) cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) for posterior decompression with in-situ fusion (PDF) tends to be lower than that of anterior decompression with fusion (ADF). However, ADF is a technically demanding operation and has ADF-specific complications. This prospective report introduced a novel concept of PDF with selective lordotic correction as well as prophylactic foraminal decompression.
METHODS: Six consecutive patients (four men and two women; mean age, 61.8 years) were

BACKGROUND: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a 3-dimensional (3D) disease that causes cervical myelopathy. The conventional 2-dimensional (2D) measurement of OPLL has limitations in estimating cord compression and myelopathy. In this study, we attempted to use 3D computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the 3D occupying ratio of OPLL and investigate its significance in the assessment of spinal cord myelopathy.
METHODS: Three-dimensional CT and MRI were performed in 50 patients with cervical OPLL at a neutral position before surgery.

BACKGROUND: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) of the spine is a complex, multifactorial disease. Although several genes that are linked to cervical OPLL susceptibility have been reported, specific genetic studies regarding thoracic OPLL are lacking. Whole-genome sequencing has been considered as an efficient strategy to search for disease-causing genes.
METHODS: We analysed whole-genome sequences in a cohort of 25 unrelated patients with thoracic OPLL. Bioinformatics analysis and various algorithms were used to predict deleterious variants. Sanger sequencing was used
