Thermal Magnetic Field Activated Propolis Release From Liquid Crystalline System Based on Magnetic Nanoparticles.

Intra-periodontal pocket drug delivery systems, such as liquid crystalline systems, are widely utilized improving the drug release control and the therapy. Propolis is used in the treatment of periodontal diseases, reducing the inflammatory and infectious conditions. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) can improve the treatment when an alternating external magnetic field (AEMF) is applied, increasing the local temperature. The aim of this study was to develop a liquid crystalline system containing MNPs for intra-periodontal pocket propolis release. MNPs were prepared using iron salts and

Repeatability of Dixon magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy for quantitative muscle fat assessments in the thigh.

BACKGROUND: Changes in muscle fat composition as for example observed in sarcopenia or muscular dystrophy affect physical performance and muscular function, like strength and power. The purpose of the present study is to measure the repeatability of Dixon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessing muscle volume and fat in the thigh. Furthermore, repeatability of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for assessing muscle fat is determined. METHODS: A prototype 6-point Dixon MRI method was used to measure muscle volume and muscle proton density fat fraction (PDFF) in the left thigh. PDFF wa

Volume-amplified magnetic bioassay integrated with microfluidic sample handling and high-Tc SQUID magnetic readout.

A bioassay based on a high-Tc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) reading out functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (fMNPs) in a prototype microfluidic platform is presented. The target molecule recognition is based on volume amplification using padlock-probe-ligation followed by rolling circle amplification (RCA). The MNPs are functionalized with single-stranded oligonucleotides, which give a specific binding of the MNPs to the large RCA coil product, resulting in a large change in the amplitude of the imaginary part of the ac magnetic susceptibility. The RCA products from amp

Magnetic permeability as a predictor of the artefact size caused by orthodontic appliances at 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Artefacts caused by orthodontic attachments limit the diagnostic value and lead to removal of these appliances before magnetic resonance imaging. Magnetic permeability can predict the artefact size. There is no standardised approach to determine the permeability of such attachments. The aim was to establish a reliable approach to determine artefact size caused by orthodontic attachments at 1.5 T MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Artefact radii of 21 attachments were determined applying two prevalent sequences of the head and neck region (turbo spin echo and gradient echo). The instrumen

Evaluation of neurodegeneration in a mouse model of infantile batten disease by magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) represent a group of common hereditary childhood neurodegenerative storage disorders that have no effective treatment. Mutations in eight different genes cause various forms of NCLs. Infantile NCL (INCL), the most lethal disease, is caused by inactivating mutations in the palmitoyl-protein thioesterase-1 (PPT1) gene. The availability of Ppt1-knockout (Ppt1-KO) mice, which recapitulate virtually all clinical and pathological features of INCL, provides an opportunity to test the effectiveness of novel therapeutic strategies in vivo. However, such studies wil

Magnetic nanoparticles modified with DTPA-AMC-rare earth for fluorescent and magnetic resonance dual mode imaging.

In the present study, we report new water-soluble cell fluorescence imaging and contrast agents that are based on DTPA-AMC(7-amino-4-methyl coumarin)-Eu(3+) and DTPA-AMC(7-amino-4-methyl coumarin)-Gd(3+) compounds conjugated to Fe(3)O(4) NPs via a PEG-NH(2) linker. The novel Fe(3)O(4) NP-conjugates present two main advantages for cell fluorescence labelling: water solubility and targeting ability. The in vitro experiments demonstrate that water-soluble Fe(3)O(4) NPs-DBI-PEG-NH-DTPA-AMC(7-amino-4-methyl coumarin)-Eu(3+) has excellent cell permeating activity. Moreover, the relaxation rate test

Assessing low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation with functional magnetic resonance imaging: a case series.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This case series assesses the effects of five consecutive days of low-frequency (1 Hz) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with and without a 6-Hz primer. Although this paper studies able-bodied individuals, similar rTMS protocols are used to facilitate motor recovery in patients with hemiplegia following stroke. However, the cortical mechanisms associated with repeated daily doses of rTMS are not completely understood. CASE DESCRIPTION: Four right-handed healthy volunteers (two men, aged 20-50 years) participated in a double-blind case series of primed

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging findings in a patient with central nervous system paracoccidioidomycosis.

A 22-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of a pulsatile swelling in the right supraclavicular region. A CT angiogram revealed an aneurysm arising from the distal right subclavian artery. At surgery, the subclavian artery was almost entirely replaced by a well-vascularized tumor mass. The vascular tumor along with the native vessel was excised and replaced with a vascular prosthesis. Biopsy was suggestive of an epithelioid hemangioma (EH). In conclusion, an EH is a rare vascular tumor. The presence of vascular hyperplasia with plump endothelial cells protruding into the lumen is the

Magnetic drug targeting--biodistribution of the magnetic carrier and the chemotherapeutic agent mitoxantrone after locoregional cancer treatment.

Magnetic Drug Targeting means the specific delivery of chemotherapeutic agents to their desired targets, e.g. tumors, by using magnetic nanoparticles (ferrofluids) bound to these agents and an external magnetic field which is focused on the tumor. This type of target directed drug injection attempts to concentrate a pharmacologic agent by enhancing its efficacy while simultaneously minimizing deleterious side effects. In previous studies, we have been able to demonstrate the efficacy of this type of localized intraarterial chemotherapy in VX2 squamous cell carcinoma among rabbits [Alexiou, C.,

Perilesional gliosis and seizure outcome: a study based on magnetization transfer magnetic resonance imaging in patients with neurocysticercosis.

We studied the effect of perilesional gliosis on seizure recurrence after stopping antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy in 108 patients with a solitary cysticercal brain cyst. All patients received albendazole therapy in the beginning, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) done after 2 seizure-free years showed complete disappearance of the lesion in 67, partial degeneration in 12, and healing by calcification in 29. The gliosis, which was not visible on initial MRI, was observed near the lesion in 22 (20%) patients on T1-weighted magnetization transfer spin-echo (MTSE) MRI. Initial seizure control

Ethanol in human brain by magnetic resonance spectroscopy: correlation with blood and breath levels, relaxation, and magnetization transfer.

BACKGROUND: Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) allows measurement of alcohol in the human brain after alcohol consumption. However, the quantity of alcohol that can be detected in the brain by 1H MRS pulse sequences has been controversial, with values ranging from about 24% to 94% of the temporally concordant blood alcohol concentrations. The quantitation of brain alcohol is critically affected by the kinetics of alcohol uptake and elimination, by the relaxation times of the protons that give rise to the brain alcohol signal, and by the specifics of both pulse sequence timing and

The etiology of posterior circulation infarcts: a prospective study using magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography.

In a prospective study of 70 patients with infarcts in the posterior circulation admitted consecutively to a population-based primary-care center, we assessed infarct location and etiology using magnetic resonance imaging, three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography, and noninvasive cardiac tests. The brainstem (mainly the paramedian pons) was the most commonly infarcted site (41/70, 59%), followed by the cerebellum (33/70, 47%). Combined supra- and infratentorial multiple vertebrobasilar infarcts occurred in 11 patients (16%). Overall, 27 patients (39%) had > or = 50% sten
