Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) aims to define the epileptogenic zone (EZ), to study its relationship with functional areas and the causal lesion and to evaluate the possibility of surgical therapy. Planning of exploration is based on the validity of the hypotheses developed from electroclinical and imaging correlations. Further investigations can refine the implantation plan (e.g. fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography [FDG-PET], single photon emission computerized tomography [SPECT], magnetoencephalography [MEG] and high resolution electroencephalography [EEG-HR]). The scheme is…

Electrophysiological oscillations in different frequency bands co-occur with perceptual, motor and cognitive processes but their function and respective contributions to these processes need further investigations. Here, we recorded MEG signals and seek for percept related modulations of alpha, beta and gamma band activity during a perceptual form/motion integration task. Participants reported their bound or unbound perception of ambiguously moving displays that could either be seen as a whole square-like shape moving along a Lissajou's figure (bound percept) or as pairs of bars oscillating in

Interictal or ictal events in partial epilepsies may project on scalp EEG contralaterally to the side of the epileptogenic lesion. Such paradoxical lateralization can be observed in case of para-sagittal generators, and is likely due to the spatial orientation of the generator, presenting an oblique projection towards the midline. We present here a case of medial occipital epilepsy investigated using EEG, MEG and stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG). MRI displayed a focal cortical dysplasia in the superior margin of the right calcarine fissure. SEEG demonstrated bilateral medial occipital inter

Animal models of tinnitus complement human findings and potentially deepen our insight into the neural substrates of tinnitus. The fact that animal data are largely based on recordings from the auditory system, in particular from subcortical structures, makes comparison with human electrophysiological data from predominantly cortical areas difficult. Electro/magnetoencephalography and imaging data extend beyond the auditory cortex. The most challenging link to be made is the one between the macroscopic data in humans and the microscopic (single neuron action potentials) and mesoscopic (local f…

The current study aimed at determining whether the deviance of hemispheric asymmetry in the auditory cortex of children with dyslexia is also evident in dyslexic adults. Ten adult dyslexic subjects and 10 normally literate controls were presented with the syllable [ba:] while event-related brain activity was recorded from both hemispheres using whole-head magnetoencephalography. In control subjects, the auditory N100m source was found to be asymmetrical with a more anterior localization in the right than in the left perisylvian cortex (difference = 0.78 cm). The N100 m dipoles in dyslexic adul…

We studied the pre-myoclonus spike using magnetoencephalography in patients with cortical myoclonus (6 with cortical reflex myoclonus and one with epilepsia partialis continua). The spike was estimated as a single current dipole on the pre-central gyrus in one patient with epilepsia partialis continua. In contrast, it was estimated as a single dipole on the post-central gyrus in 5 of 6 patients with cortical reflex myoclonus, and as two dipoles on the pre- and post-central gyrus in the remaining patient. We conclude that there are 3 physiological types of cortical myoclonus: (1) abnormal disch…

Brain oscillations are considered to play a pivotal role in neural communication. However, detailed information regarding the typical oscillatory patterns of individual brain regions is surprisingly scarce. In this study we applied a multivariate data-driven approach to create an atlas of the natural frequencies of the resting human brain on a voxel-by-voxel basis. We analysed resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from 128 healthy adult volunteers obtained from the Open MEG Archive (OMEGA). Spectral power was computed in source space in 500 ms steps for 82 frequency bins logarithmica…

BACKGROUND: The conventional focus on discrete finger movements (i.e., index finger flexion or button-box key presses) has been an effective method to study neuromotor control using magnetoencephalography (MEG). However, this approach is challenging for young children and not possible for some people with physical disability.
NEW METHOD: We have developed a novel, interactive MEG compatible reach-to-target task to investigate neuromotor function, specifically for use with young children. We used an infrared touch-screen frame to detect responses to targets presented using custom software. The…

While much research has addressed the neural basis of lexical access and the composition of lexical items into larger meanings, little is known about how the semantic properties of individual words affect composition. Research on modifier-noun combinations has, however, shown that composition related activity in the left anterior temporal lobe (LATL) is sensitive to the conceptual specificity of the composing words. Here we tested whether this pattern extends to verb-argument combinations in minimal subject-verb-object sentences. If the LATL specificity effects extend to verb-argument integrat

Pain disorders are associated with aberrant oscillations in the pain-related cortical regions; however, few studies have investigated the relationship between the functional cortical network and migraine chronification through direct neural signals. Magnetoencephalography was used to record the resting-state brain activity of healthy controls as well as patients with episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM). The source-based oscillatory dynamics of the pain-related cortical regions, which comprises 10 node regions (the bilateral primary [SI] and secondary somatosensory cortices, insula…

Neural mismatch response resulting from the difference between prediction and observation is related to change detection and discrimination. Robust neuromagnetic brain activity of auditory mismatch-related perception occurs in response to non-prototypical vowels in across-category contrasts for first-language speakers. However, whether this non-prototypicality effect applies to within-category vowel perception remains to be elucidated. Here, healthy Japanese adults (n = 7) were subjected to magnetoencephalography (MEG) while watching a silent movie, and passively listened to synthesized Englis…

INTRODUCTION: This study was aimed to explore the relationship between neural network changes in newly diagnosed children with Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECTS) and cognitive impairment.
METHODS: Children's cognition was evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data of 18 healthy children and 22 BECTS patients were recorded in order to construct a functional connectivity (FC) network, which was quantified by graph theory (GT).
RESULTS: The mean age of the control group was 7.94 ± 1.89 years

Evoked tactile sensation (ETS) is induced with stimulation of areas in the projected finger map (PFM) in the stump skin of forearm amputees. The aim of the present study is to further explore the neural correlation of the ETS with central activities in the somatosensory cortex (SI). Two forearm amputees were recruited to participate in this study. The neuroimaging technique of Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was employed to reveal the activities in the somatosensory cortex (SI), while the thumb and little finger areas in the PFM and the thumb and little finger of the contralateral hand were stimu…

We investigated patterns of sensor-level functional connectivity derived from single-trial whole-head magnetoencephalography data during a pseudoword reading and a letter-sound naming task in children with reading difficulties (RD) and children with no reading impairments (NI). The Phase Lag Index (PLI), a linear and nonlinear estimator, computed for each pair of sensors, was used to construct graphs and obtain estimates of local and global network efficiency according to graph theory. In the 8-13 Hz (alpha band) and 20-30 Hz (gamma band) range, RD students showed significantly lower global ef…

Brain regions that process affect are strongly connected with visual regions, but the functional consequences of this structural organization have been relatively unexplored. How does the momentary affect of an observer influence perception? We induced either pleasant or unpleasant affect in participants and then recorded their neural activity using magnetoencephalography while they completed an object recognition task. We hypothesized, and found, that affect influenced the speed of object recognition by modulating the speed and amplitude of evoked responses in occipitotemporal cortex and regi…

Children who receive treatment for medulloblastoma have a high survival rate, but also a high likelihood of developing posterior fossa syndrome, a condition that includes devastating balance and motor problems. This case series used 2 novel neuromodulation devices in conjunction with an intensive physical therapy intervention for 2 children who were 5 years post tumor treatment with a diagnosis of posterior fossa syndrome. Pre- and postclinical measures, in addition to magnetoencephalography brain imaging, describe positive behavioral and neuroplastic changes resulting from the intervention. T…

Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), the neural response to scenes was recorded and compared with that to faces. The prominent MEG signals in response to scenes appeared 200-300 ms after the stimulus presentation while those in response to faces appeared between 150 and 200 ms. Source locations of the signals were estimated in the right parahippocampal and parieto-occipital regions with a latency of 300 ms for the scene response, whereas those were estimated in the lingual or fusiform gyri bilaterally with a latency of 160 ms for the face response. These data suggest that both the temporal and …
