Error-correction problems in autism: evidence for a monitoring impairment?

With a task involving the launching of missiles at targets, Malenka et al. (1982) and C. Frith and Done (1989) showed that schizophrenic patients with delusions of alien control and auditory hallucinations were likely to leave erroneous responses uncorrected whose outcomes were not visible until the missile hit or failed to hit the target, while being able to correct visible errors adequately. This is consistent with an impairment in the central monitoring of action. Using a similar task, we found that children with autism were more likely than controls to fail to correct both kinds of error.

"Do My Friends Only Like the School Me or the True Me?": School Belonging, Camouflaging, and Anxiety in Autistic Students.

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of autistic students in schools is continuously increasing. Typically, the social and sensory differences associated with autism can make the school environment difficult to manage. Autistic students are more likely to experience mental health difficulties than their non-autistic peers. It is therefore important to listen to autistic people about their educational experiences and explore ways that the environment could be changed to reduce anxiety. PURPOSE: The current research explores whether the relationship between school belonging and anxiety in secondary-aged

The co-design of an exercise-based, lifestyle intervention for people with venous leg ulcers; a self-care, expert-supported strategy for a chronic condition.

Exercise is recommended as an adjunct treatment, alongside compression therapy to increase venous leg ulcer (VLU) wound healing times, however, there are no published programmes available that support patients to exercise at home on their own. To develop an exercise-based lifestyle intervention that is feasible and acceptable to people with VLUs, a participatory approach was utilised. Clinicians, researchers, and people living with VLUs collaborated in the design of "FISCU Home". Two focus groups and nine interviews were conducted with people living with a VLU. Tissue viability nurses provided

Prescription psychostimulants as a harm reduction and treatment intervention for methamphetamine use disorder and the implications for nursing clinical practice: A scoping review of the literature.

The global rise in methamphetamine use and its negative effects warrants the need for research exploring harm reduction and treatment interventions for individuals with methamphetamine use disorder. Agonist medications have been utilized for years for the treatment of heroin and opioid addiction, but have yet to be incorporated into mainstream Canadian practice for methamphetamine dependence. This review aims to provide an overview of the current trends of prescription psychostimulant usage for individuals with methamphetamine use disorder from a Canadian perspective, identifies the barriers t

ASSESSING THE KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES OF SCHOOL TEACHERS REGARDING DYSLEXIA, ATTENTION-DEFICIT/ HYPERACTIVITY AND AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS IN KARACHI, PAKISTAN.

BACKGROUND: Learning impairments in children consist of a spectrum of disorders that are under diagnosed in Pakistan. Most learning disorders have long term consequences for a child and early detection is thus imperative. Teachers may be able to play a key role in such identification. The objective of our study was to survey knowledge, attitudes and practices of school teachers regarding dyslexia, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autistic spectrum disorder, and assess their ability to identify learning disabilities. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 233 pr

At sea with disability! Transformative learning in medical undergraduates voyaging with disabled sailors.

CONTEXT: Attitudinal objectives are difficult to formulate, teach and assess; yet good attitudes are fundamental to good practice. For instance, studies highlight negative attitudes to disability in the medical student community that contrast with the self-conceptions of disabled persons. This study was designed to better understand attitudinal learning, inadequately addressed by contemporary programmes, through the application of Mezirow's 'transformative learning theory' (TLT) to a novel educational intervention. METHODS: Participating students went to sea, for voyages of 5-7 days, in tall

Breast cancer knowledge, attitudes, and screening behaviors among African American women: the Black cosmetologists promoting health program.

BACKGROUND: African American women have higher rates of breast cancer mortality than their white counterparts. Studies have suggested that this is partly caused by discovery of cancer at a later stage, highlighting the importance of encouraging early detection of breast cancer in this population. To guide the creation of a breast cancer education intervention and help focus other health educators' and clinicians' health promotion efforts, this study explored whether a cohort of African American women living in San Diego would demonstrate the possession of adequate baseline knowledge about brea

A primer on rectal MRI in patients on watch-and-wait treatment for rectal cancer.

Total neoadjuvant treatment (TNT) for rectal cancer is becoming an accepted treatment paradigm and is changing the landscape of this disease, wherein up to 50% of patients who undergo TNT are able to avoid surgery. This places new demands on the radiologist in terms of interpreting degrees of response to treatment. This primer summarizes the Watch-and-Wait approach and the role of imaging, with illustrative "atlas-like" examples as an educational guide for radiologists. We present a brief literature summary of the evolution of rectal cancer treatment, with a focus on magnetic resonance imaging

The implementation of pharmacogenomics into UK general practice: a qualitative study exploring barriers, challenges and opportunities.

Pharmacogenomics describes interpatient genetic variability in drug responses. Information based on whole genome sequencing will soon open up the field of pharmacogenomics and facilitate the use of genomic information relating to drug metabolism and drug responses. We undertook a qualitative study, aiming to explore the potential barriers, opportunities and challenges facing the implementation of pharmacogenomics into primary care. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 18 clinical participants (16 GPs and 2 other clinicians). All interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Usi

Evaluating a Web-Based Application to Facilitate Family-School-Health Care Collaboration for Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Inclusive Settings: Protocol for a Nonrandomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: An individual education plan (IEP) is a key element in the support of the schooling of children with special educational needs or disabilities. The IEP process requires effective communication and strong partnership between families, school staff, and health care practitioners. However, these stakeholders often report their collaboration as limited and difficult to maintain, leading to difficulties in implementing and monitoring the child's IEP. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe the study protocol used to evaluate a technological tool (CoEd application) aiming at fostering co

Extended difficulties after psychedelic experiences: Prevalence and associations in a global, multilingual sample.

As psychedelic use increases and integrates with mainstream medicine, understanding the prevalence and nature of postpsychedelic adverse outcomes is critical. We investigated extended difficulties after psychedelic use via the Global Psychedelic Survey (GPS) 2025, which is a multilingual online survey of people who have used psychedelics. Data on the prevalence, characteristics, and associations of retrospectively reported extended difficulties was gained from N = 6,476 participants. The most common difficulties reported were existential struggle (36.6%), depression (34%), and derealization (2
