The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of hypophosphatemia in female patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) treated parenterally with ferric carboxymaltose (FCM). Thirty-two female patients examined for IDA at the Hematology and Oncology Department of one General Hospital were included in the study. The inclusion criteria were hemoglobin <110 g/L, transferrin saturation <50%, ferritin <30 ng/mL, and ineffective oral iron therapy. The hemoglobin values were significantly increased 6 weeks after therapy in comparison with initial values. The onset of the asymptomatic hypophosph…

AIMS: This study aimed to estimate the utility values of the factors associated with intravenous (IV) iron infusion treatment in Japanese patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) from the patient's perspective.
METHODS: A conjoint analysis based on online survey data was conducted in May 2022 (registration number: UMIN000047756). Respondents in the main group were selected from the general population (20-69 years). Seven attributes were included in this analysis: waiting time before receiving an IV infusion, pain due to IV infusion, time required for IV infusion, number of IV infusions requ

BACKGROUND: Intravenous iron supplementation is an established therapy for patients with heart failure (HF) and concomitant iron deficiency reducing the risk of HF hospitalization. However, concerns persist regarding potential adverse vascular effects, since iron may induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis of endothelial cells. To assess endothelial health following ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) administration, we analyzed the profile of circulating endothelial microvesicles (EMVs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in a cohort of 23 HF patients using flow cytometry.
RESULTS: …

Iron deficiency (ID) with or without anemia is frequently observed in patients with heart failure (HF). Uncorrected ID is associated with higher hospitalization and mortality in patients with acute HF (AHF) and chronic HF (CHF). Hence, in addition to chronic renal insufficiency, anemia, and diabetes, ID appears as a novel comorbidity and a treatment target of CHF. Intravenous (IV) ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) reduces the hospitalization risk due to HF worsening and improves functional capacity and quality of life (QOL) in HF patients. The current consensus document provides criteria, an expert …

BACKGROUND: In AFFIRM-AHF, treatment of iron deficiency with intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) reduced the risk of heart failure (HF) hospitalization and improved quality of life (QoL) vs placebo in patients stabilized following an acute HF (AHF) episode, with no effect on cardiovascular (CV) death. Diabetes and iron deficiency frequently accompany AHF. This post hoc analysis explored the effects of diabetes on outcomes in AFFIRM-AHF patients.
METHODS: Patients were stratified by diabetes yes/no at baseline. The effects of FCM vs placebo on primary (total HF hospitalizations and CV deat…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Iron deficiency (ID) complicates heart failure (HF) at different stages of the natural history of the disease; however, this frequent comorbidity is still not comprehensively understood and investigated in terms of pathophysiology. Intravenous iron therapy with ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) should be considered to improve the quality of life, exercise capacity, and symptoms in stable HF with ID, as well as to reduce HF hospitalizations in iron-deficient patients stabilized after an episode of acute HF. The therapy with intravenous iron, however, continues to generate important…

BACKGROUND: Timely and effective iron supplementation may help reduce the incidence of postoperative anemia and its associated problems. In this study, we aim to assess the efficacy of intravenous ferric carboxy maltose (FCM) on improving hemoglobin(Hb) level posttotal knee arthroplasty (TKA).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 263 patients who had undergone unilateral TKA with 157 patients in the study group (year 2019) and 106 in the control group (year 2016). Patients in the study group received FCM (500 mg IV) on postoperative day 1, whereas patients in the control group did not receive…

AIMS: In AFFIRM-AHF, intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) reduced heart failure (HF) hospitalisations and improved quality of life versus placebo in iron-deficient patients stabilised after an acute HF episode. This analysis explored the effects of FCM versus placebo in patients with ischaemic and non-ischaemic HF aetiology.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 1082 patients from AFFIRM-AHF: 590 with ischaemic HF (defined as investigator-reported ischaemic HF aetiology and/or prior acute myocardial infarction and/or prior coronary revascularisation) and 492 with non-ischaemic HF. The prevalenc…

This study investigates the impact of exposure to human blood plasma on the physicochemical properties of two widely used intravenous (IV) iron-carbohydrate nanomedicines for treating iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia, ferric carboxymaltose and iron sucrose, with a particular focus on their colloidal stability and protein corona formation. Using dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential centrifugal sedimentation (DCS), size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), an…

Iron is an essential element for numerous physiological processes in the human body, and maintaining proper iron homeostasis is critical for health. Iron imbalance can lead to conditions like iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Intravenous (IV) iron drugs, including iron-carbohydrate complexes such as iron sucrose (IS) and ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), are commonly used in the treatment of IDA. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying the uptake and intracellular fate of these complexes remain poorly understood despite over seven decades of clinical use. This study introduces a novel application o…

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common and preventable cause of anemia. Oral and parenteral iron preparations can be used for treatment. There are some concerns about the effect on oxidative stress of parenteral preparations. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of ferric carboxymaltose and iron sucrose on short- and long-term oxidant-antioxidant status. The study was designed as a prospective, single-center, observational study. Patients diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia and receiving intravenous iron therapy were included. Patients were divided into 3 groups as those rece…

Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) is a prevalent cardiovascular condition characterized by a complex pathophysiology and limited therapeutic options. Coinciding iron deficiency often compounds the clinical picture, contributing to symptom burden and adverse outcomes. The review underscores the urgency for effective treatments in light of its increasing incidence and considerable healthcare burden. It highlights the clinical significance of addressing iron deficiency in HFpEF patients. FCM emerges as a promising therapeutic modality, demonstrating the ability to rapidly res
