Research information systems and knowledge graphs: a review.

Digital research artifacts (articles, datasets, software, etc.) are the basis for scientific research. Due to the continuous growth and complexity (e.g., due to formats) of such artifacts, ensuring their organization and long-term availability for research is becoming increasingly challenging. It is essential to manage the artifacts so that they are easily discoverable, accessible and useable by relevant communities. Research Information Systems (RISs) have become indispensable in curating, managing, and publishing research artifacts and other research objects. Diverse communities actively use

Preventive mental health and substance abuse programs and services in managed care.

If effective preventive behavioral health services were available to the millions of Americans enrolled in managed care organizations, the public health impact could be significant. This project sought to summarize published research-based information about effective preventive interventions for mental health and substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs) shown or likely to have no negative cost impact. Fifty-four studies satisfied seven screening criteria. Their findings demonstrated that preventive behavioral health interventions appropriate for managed care settings have been evaluat

What are the "best-buys" for health promotion in pharmacy?

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) significantly contribute to global mortality and diminished quality of life, placing a growing burden on healthcare systems. The World Health Organization has developed cost-effective strategies to manage these diseases, entitled "best buys", by addressing major risk factors for NCDs, such as smoking, alcohol use, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity. Pharmacies, as accessible healthcare facilities, are well-positioned to support preventive care and behaviour change, including tobacco and alcohol cessation, dietary modifications, and physical activi

Rural beneficiaries with chronic conditions: does prevalence pose a risk to Medicare managed care?

One of several possible barriers to the growth of Medicare managed care in rural areas is the fear of adverse selection (i.e., the perception that rural beneficiaries are less healthy and have pent-up demand for services). Using 1993 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey data, we conclude that specific chronic conditions common among the elderly are not more prevalent among rural than urban beneficiaries. Medicare reimbursements for beneficiaries with chronic conditions are generally lower in rural counties. However, the difference between actual Medicare reimbursements and projected capitated p

Policy and practice of programmatic management of latent tuberculosis infection in The Netherlands.

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening and preventive treatment is one of the components of the World Health Organization (WHO) End TB strategy, and particularly relevant for low tuberculosis (TB) incidence countries, i.e. less than 100 TB cases per million population. The Netherlands is such a low-incidence country with traditionally a strong emphasis on programmatic management of LTBI, e.g. examining contacts of infectious TB patients by the public health services. Increasingly, curative services are involved in LTBI management of clinical risk groups. The country recently adopted a

For an industry to succeed and satisfy its customers, "QUALITY" must be a primary goal. Quality has been central to blood banking from its inception, with the evolution of a Quality Program since the opening of the first blood bank in U.S. at the Cook County Hospital in 1937. Over the ensuing decades, continuous scientific progress in blood preservation, filters, viral and blood group testing, crossmatching, automation, and computerization including bar coding, etc. has contributed to the quality and safety of the blood products and transfusion service. However, with the advent of the AIDS era

Progressive systemic sclerosis: Part 2--Nursing management.

Multiple body systems can be affected by scleroderma. Satisfactory coping and life-style alterations will depend on numerous factors, including the nature and extent of organ involvement, individual coping style, and health professional services provided. Because of the low incidence of this disease, nurses may have little knowledge about the nursing management. Because of the nature of the disease's complications, the nephrology or dialysis nurse may care for more scleroderma patients than other hospital nurses.

Emerging information technologies across the autism service and prevention continuum: a narrative review of screening, diagnosis, intervention, and health equity.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a major global public-health concern, yet timely identification and support remain difficult to access for many families, especially in rural, low-resource, and otherwise underserved settings. Emerging information technologies have been proposed as tools for narrowing this service gap. These include artificial intelligence (AI), wearable sensors, and the Internet of Things, mobile health applications and digital therapeutics, telehealth, immersive virtual and augmented reality, social robotics, and large language models. This narrative review organizes the evi

An Australian diagnostic microbiology surge response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diagnostic microbiology services form a critical component of the response to infectious disease outbreaks. Like previous respiratory virus pandemics, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed significant strains on the standing capacity of laboratories around the world. In this case study, we describe the surge response required by our laboratory to meet the fluctuating demand for SARS-CoV-2 in our regional pathology service in Western Sydney, Australia between March and May 2020. While the overall number of SARS-CoV-2 PCR positive cases was relatively low compared to other Australian local health dis
