PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility and indication of condylectomy for treatment of comminuted fractures of the condyle above the neck.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients with condylar fractures, treated between September 2007 and September 2011 were reviewed respectively. Among them, 30 underwent open reduction and internal fixation, 15 underwent conservative therapy, and 16 patients (18 sides) who had comminuted fractures of the condyle above the neck underwent condylectomy. All the patients were followed up for 5 to 48 months after treatment to evaluate the outcomes.
RESULTS: Among the 16 pa

Among the potential risks of nasotracheal intubation are nasal bleeding, sinusitis, bacteremia, accidental turbinectomy, and some other structural damages. Retropharyngeal dissection is reported as a very rare complication of nasotracheal intubation, mostly encountered in elective surgery patients. A case with traumatic subcondylar fracture of the mandible is presented here, which is suspected to be the cause of the nasopharyngeal dissection that was observed during attempted nasotracheal intubation.

The authors report on the management of a patient who presented with a pathologic mandibular fracture as the initial presenting sign of multiple myeloma. The patient underwent surgical resection of the mandibular area involved by the pathologic fracture and osteolytic lesion. Then, he was prescribed combined thalidomide, melphalan, and prednisone for systemic treatment. The patient tolerated his treatment well and is currently being followed up on outpatient basis. The treatment of a mandibular pathologic fracture associated with a solitary multiple myeloma lesion should include a segmental re

Interfragmentary wire surgical technique was used to repair a caudal mandibular fracture in a 15-week-old Labrador Retriever dog. Computed tomographic imaging aided the diagnosis and treatment planning for the application of this method. Abnormal tooth development of caudal molar teeth was related to the traumatic event and/or surgical technique. The strategically important mandibular first molar tooth was maintained. The fracture fixation method used in this case provided early return to function and radiographic evidence of expected fracture healing during a 10-month period despite wire disp

Fracture of the mandibular genial tubercles is an uncommon pathology affecting edentulous patients with severe maxillary atrophy. Usually occurs spontaneously which complicates the diagnosis. Their importance lies in the functional alterations, which occur as a consequence of the disinsertion of the genihyoid and genioglossus muscles. The treatment of fracture of the genial tubercles is controversial, including no surgical intervention, excision of the avulsed bone fragments, and muscular repositioning. There have been only 11 cases reported in the literature of this fracture, most of them spo

A prominent mandibular angle is considered to be unattractive in Asian countries because it gives the face a square and muscular appearance. Successful correction by angle ostectomy has been reported, but one of the serious complications of angle reduction ostectomy is fracture of the mandibular condyle. If the ostectomy line is misdirected vertically, the condyle may be fractured. The authors experienced two cases of condylar fracture during angle reduction. Case 1 was a pulled-out condylar fracture, where an L-shaped miniplate was then attached by external approach, and intermaxillary fixati

A case of vertical-split fracture of the right mandibular condyle and its sequelae is presented. The patient was a 16-year-old female being assessed for orthodontic treatment. Orthopantomograph and plain joint view radiographs showed a remodelled condyle which had suffered trauma 10 years previously. This type of fracture is unusual in nature but has not led to any secondary lack of growth, restriction of movement or facial asymmetry.

BACKGROUND: Internal rigid fixation for mandibular fractures has been recognized as a reliable method for obtaining osteosynthesis. It may allow for early active physiotherapy and resumption of normal function. However, few studies have compared the various fixation methods.
METHODS: From January 1993 through December 1997, 101 patients with mandibular fractures, who were selected for study, received treatment using various fixation methods at the Craniofacial Center, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The fixation methods included plate fixation in 44 patients, lag screw fixation in 30, combined …

This report describes irreversible deterioration of vision after Purtscher's retinopathy associated with a fractured mandible. This rare phenomenon will be discussed, its literature will be reviewed, and its possible etiology will be suggested.

The treatment of multiple mandibular fractures in an 8-year-old child suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta is described. The use of microplates is presented while some specific problems in relation to the disease are discussed.

A case of a median mandibular fracture with extensive osteolysis 8 weeks following a reduction and protrusion genioplasty is reported. A porous hydroxylapatite block, Interpore 200, was used for contour augmentation at the labiomental fold. The weakening effect of the osteotomy, a foreign body-related chronic osteomyelitis, and repetitive angulation of the mandible during mastication play a role in the pathogenesis of this fracture. Treatment consisted of removal of the porous hydroxylapatite block, removal of the screws and plates, surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue, antibiotics, and

This case illustrates the use of a microplate in the open reduction and fixation of an intracapsular mandibular condylar fracture in a patient who was unable to tolerate a closed reduction because of the nature of her chronic illness. The advantages of this method of fracture fixation include early function and elimination of intermaxillary fixation, which benefited our patient. This technique should be reserved for patients for whom conservative measures are not appropriate.

A case report is presented concerning a patient who sustained a condyle fracture with superior dislocation into the middle cranial fossa. Although relatively rare, other cases of central condylar dislocation have been presented and will be discussed and compared. Diagnosis has been a problem, and treatments have varied greatly for these cases. This is the first case on record, however, in which such a dislocation occurred in conjunction with a fracture of the condylar head. In the present case, the dura was covered with temporalis muscle and the glenoid fossa was covered using the fragments of
