Correlation between A-mode ultrasound and radiography in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis.

A-mode ultrasound examination of the maxillary sinuses with the Echosine and Sinusvu 2500 units was compared with roentgenographic examination in the diagnosis of maxillary and frontal sinusitis. A-mode ultrasound was primarily useful in the detection of secretions within the sinus and not mucosal thickening. Both ultrasound devices had high specificities (92% for Echosine and 94% for Sinusvu 2500) in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis, but the Echosine had a greater overall sensitivity (61%) than the Sinusvu 2500 (29%). More significantly, as the opacification of the roentgenogram increased…

Penetration of azidocillin into the secretion and tissues in chronic maxillary sinusitis and tonsillitis.

The penetration of azidocillin into the sinus mucosa and secretion as well as into tonsils and adenoids was studied. Altogehter 73 patients were included and they were arranged in four groups according to age, diagnosis and drug dose. The average azidocillin concentration was satisfactory and predictable in all tissues and well over the MIC for most upper respiratory tract pathogens studied. In the maxillary antrum secretion the values were much lower and in many cases under the MIC for hemophilus. This is thought to depend upon the drug's being bound to proteins in the secretions. The clinica

[Maxillary sinusitis as a complication of dental implants placement: a case report].

The article presents a case of chronic odontogenic maxillary sinusitis and the results of its surgical treatment. The cause of the sinusitis, confirmed by the results of X-ray and pathohistological studies, was an inflammatory process affecting the bone tissue around the implant, installed in the place of the upper first molar which was accompanied by the development of an oroantral fistula. During the surgical intervention, the communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus was eliminated, and the implant with the abutment, which was entirely in its cavity, was also removed.

Digital diaphanoscopy of the maxillary sinuses: A revival of optical diagnosis for rhinosinusitis.

PURPOSE: The non-invasive diagnosis of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) remains an unresolved problem of modern otolaryngology. Analog diaphanoscopy of reduced transillumination (shading) could be enhanced by a digital image processing of the maxillary sinuses. By this means, the limited ergonomics of this safe and low-cost method can be overcome, and merits renewed the investigation. Here, we compared the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of digital diaphanoscopy and computed tomography (CT) in detecting shading in the maxillary sinus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 103 adults using both

Morphogenesis of maxillary sinuses in infants, during early and first childhood.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To study the peculiarities of the structure and to see the development of maxillary sinuses in infants, during the early and first childhood periods of human ontogenesis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The study of the peculiarities of the development and formation of the maxillary sinuses' wall was carried out on 50 species of the upper jaws, turtles and sections of the head of the human corpses during different periods of ontogenesis (in infants, during early and first childhood) with the help of histological examination, preparation, CT scan, radiography a

Efficacy of sinus ultrasound in diagnosis of acute and subacute maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of sinus ultrasound for acute and subacute maxillary sinusitis (ASMS) by investigating the agreement between different tools. We also proposed a confirmatory tool directed protocol for adult acute sinusitis, to enhance diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled patients who were older than 18 years, with a diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis. The duration of symptoms was confined to less than 12 weeks. Rigid nasal endoscopy, sinus ultrasound, and plain sinus film were performed for all patients on…

Sinusitis Due to the Presence of a Dental Implant Inside the Maxillary Sinus.

The migration of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon event of occurrence. Disrespect for concepts of implantology, low alveolar bone density at the site, high incidence of masticatory force in posterior region, and clinical intercurrences predispose to failure in rehabilitation.

Stage IV sporadic Burkitt's leukaemia with osteolysis in the maxillary sinuses.

We present a case of paediatric Stage IV sporadic Burkitt's leukaemia presenting as cheek enlargement with osteolysis of the maxilla. An 8-year-old boy was referred to our department with diffuse swelling of both cheeks. Head and neck examination revealed bilateral diffuse nontender swelling, non-fluctuant but slightly compressible. Computed tomography imaging showed enhancing bilateral bulky lesions expanding the maxillary sinuses, with associated osteolysis in the posterior walls of both sinuses. Laboratory results included blast cells in the peripheral blood, suggesting a haematopoietic tum

Isolated bilateral blowout fracture with extensive pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses.

The blowout fracture injuries are often associated with fractures of the zygomatic complex and other facial structures but can also occur in an isolated fashion. Isolated bilateral blowout fractures are uncommon and constitute a challenge with regard to both assessment and reconstruction. This article describes an uncommon case of isolated bilateral blowout fracture in a patient with extensive pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses.

Chloramphenicol eye drops in the treatment of conditions indicative of maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Our own clinical experience of general practice over the last 15 years has indicated that chloramphenicol eye drops may have a favourable effect on many patients troubled by symptoms indicative of acute maxillary sinusitis. We wanted to conduct a pilot study to test whether this observation could be verified. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Treatment with chloramphenicol eye drops or systemic peroral antibiotics was tested on patients with symptoms indicative of acute maxillary sinusitis. The patients were randomised to two groups, one of which received systemic peroral antibiotics, the othe…

Computed tomography measurements of different dimensions of maxillary and frontal sinuses.

BACKGROUND: We have previously proposed the use of Doppler ultrasound to non-invasively stage sinus infection, as we showed that acoustic streaming could be generated in nonpurulent sinus secretions and helped to distinguish it from mucopurulent sinus secretions. In order to continue this development of a clinically applicable Doppler equipment, we need to determine different dimensions of the paranasal sinuses, especially the thickness of the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus (at the canine fossa). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the thickness of the canine fossa.
