Numerical simulation and analysis of midfacial impacts and traumatic brain injuries.

BACKGROUNDS: The maxillofacial region is the exposed part of the human body and is susceptible to injury due to the limited protective equipment. Due to anatomic proximity of the maxillofacial skeleton and cranium, the force can be transmitted directly to the brain in case of maxillofacial impact, maxillofacial injuries are often accompanied with craniocerebral trauma. Therefore, it is necessary to study the biomechanical response mechanism of trauma to improve prevention of traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: To investigate the biomechanical mechanism between the two injuries, a finite el

An Algorithm for the Management of Concomitant Maxillofacial, Laryngeal, and Cervical Spine Trauma.

Concomitant maxillofacial, laryngeal and cervical spine injuries may occur after high-energy accidents. Although this presentation is uncommon, the multiple injuries may compromise airway, breathing, circulation, and neurologic function. We identified 8 adult trauma patients admitted to the National University Hospital with the concomitant injuries. We reviewed the patient data and existing literature to identify the important factors that must be considered for management. Seven resulted from high velocity accidents, whereas 1 was assaulted. An algorithm that prioritizes in-tandem diagnosis a

[Sport-related maxillofacial fractures].

The records of 537 patients with 750 maxillofacial fractures were reviewed and analyzed. 55 (10.2%) had sport-related injuries and the rest were due to other causes. The sport-related group was predominantly male (ratio 9:1) with a mean age of 24.5 years. The mandible was most commonly injured (52.5%), followed by the zygomatic complex (32.8%). The incidence of complicated mid-facial fractures was only 2.8%, and of comminuted fractures 9%. This distribution of injuries is most likely due to the relatively low-energy of trauma associated with many sport activities. The relatively low mean age o

Colon ascendens stent peritonitis (CASP)--a standardized model for polymicrobial abdominal sepsis.

Road traffic accidents (RTA) are the major cause of maxillofacial injuries (MFIs) in developing countries (Akama et al. 2007). Road traffic accidents were reported to be the 9th most common cause of death and morbidity in the world and are expected to rise to 3rd position by 2020 (Peden et al. 2002). Maxillofacial injuries remain a serious clinical problem because of the involvement of complex anatomic region. Facial fractures occur most commonly in males in the third decade of life (Motamedi et al. 2014). The goal of treatment in facial fractures is to achieve anatomic reduction and restore f

Control of cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea via C-arm-guided reduction of the zygomatic arch as a part of the temporal bone: interdisciplinary approach to an unusual craniomaxillofacial fracture.

Maxillofacial fractures are often associated with blunt head injuries, of which skull base trauma is a common component. However, most oral and maxillofacial surgeons do not provide definitive management of temporal bone fractures involving the skull base and their sequelae. Persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage that is refractory to conservative measures usually requires surgical closure to decrease the risk of meningitis. In general, reduction of the displaced fragment of the skull base in temporal bone fractures is not considered a priority. We describe an unusual case of craniomaxil

Management of Laryngeal Trauma.

The larynx is a complex anatomic structure and a properly functioning larynx is essential for breathing, voice, and swallowing. Laryngeal trauma is often associated with other injuries, including intracranial injuries, penetrating neck injuries, cervical spine fractures, and facial fractures. Although uncommon, laryngotracheal injuries may lead to life-threatening airway emergencies. Because laryngeal injuries are rare, even surgeons with a great deal of experience in managing maxillofacial trauma have limited exposure to management of laryngeal and tracheal injury. This article reviews a prot

A review of forensic analysis of dental and maxillofacial skeletal trauma.

Dental and maxillofacial trauma analysis in the forensic context, includes assessment of both living and deceased persons. It is required in all cases where human abuse is suspected and where signs of skeletal trauma are detected in human remains. Skeletal trauma refers to the damage inflicted to bone, teeth and other hard tissues. An accurate analysis of the dental and maxillofacial trauma is achieved by the assessment of the remains by forensic pathologists, anthropologists and odontologists. This paper aims to review dental and maxillofacial skeletal trauma in the scope of forensic science.

Transcatheter arterial embolization in the treatment of maxillofacial trauma induced life-threatening hemorrhages.

BACKGROUND: Life-threatening hemorrhages with hemodynamic instability are uncommon in patients with sustained maxillofacial trauma, but when they occur, require immediate surgical intervention if conservative treatment fails. This study assessed the effects of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) in the treatment of maxillofacial trauma-induced life-threatening hemorrhages. METHODS: From January 2004 to January 2007, eight ambulatory patients admitted for maxillofacial injuries with life-threatening hemorrhaging and hemodynamic instability (systolic blood pressure < or = 90 mm Hg) caused

Missing teeth after maxillofacial trauma: a case report and management protocol.

Management of maxillofacial trauma includes primary care, in which diagnosis and management of dentoalveolar injury play a vital role. Due to the impact sustained during a maxillofacial injury (whether direct or indirect), dentoalveolar injuries can occur, leading to fracture and displacement of teeth and associated alveolar bone into the surrounding soft tissues and associated structures, such as the maxillary sinus, nasal cavity, upper respiratory tract, tracheobronchial tree, or gastrointestinal tract. Undiagnosed displaced teeth may cause complications such as airway obstruction. This pape

Severe subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum associated with minor maxillofacial trauma.

In the maxillofacial region, subcutaneous emphysema, which occurs after fractures of the pneumatic paranasal sinuses, is a common finding in a maxillofacial surgeon's daily practice. Pneumomediastinum secondary to these fractures is a less frequent event, however, without thoracic or abdominal injuries. The authors report a case of severe subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum that occurred after fractures of the nasal bones and medial orbital wall. The etiology, diagnosis, and treatment modalities of mediastinal emphysema are discussed.

Role of Multidetector Computed Tomography in the Evaluation of Maxillofacial Trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillofacial fractures are among the commonest injuries occurring in trauma patients. Multislice computed tomography (CT) is a widely used radiological investigation that accurately reveals the number, location, and extent of the fractures as well as concomitant soft tissue injuries and has been found to be superior in the diagnosis of maxillofacial fractures owing to high sensitivity and specificity. This study was performed to assess the efficacy of axial, coronal, sagittal, and three-dimensional (3D) reformatted images in the detection of fractures in maxillofacial trauma. M
