Obstetric and gynecologic pleural effusions may occur in the setting of different diseases and conditions, early and appropriate recognition of the different etiologies of these effusions will aid in appropriate treatment management. In this paper we will give an overview of the different pleural effusion etiologies that may be encountered including catamenial hemothorax, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, the different Meigs' syndromes and benign peripartum pleural effusion.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate imaging characteristics of ovarian fibromas and fibrothecomas and to identify select clinical markers and imaging features to help in their diagnosis.
METHODS: Over a 5-year period, 18 of 29 women with histologically proven fibromas or fibrothecomas underwent sonography, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). On review of the images, tumor size, solid component characteristics, and cystic components were evaluated. Age, cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), and Meig syndrome were assessed.

In the neurologic literature there has been a growing recognition of a syndrome of focal cranial dystonias referred to variously as blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia, Brueghel's syndrome, or Meige's syndrome. Typically, this syndrome presents as an isolated and idiopathic dystonia of facial or oromandibular muscles occasionally prompting a referral to a speech pathologist. Our findings in a group of 10 patients with this diagnosis are presented, and the negligible effect of an intensive program of speech management for one subject is described.

Essential blepharospasm is considered to be an incomplete form of Meige dystonic syndrome. Different medical and surgical treatments have been tried with a low success rate on a long-term basis. An intravenous infusion of a 250-ml, 10% ethanol solution decreased dystonic scores in five of seven patients with spasmodic torticollis, but had no effect in patients with Meige syndrome, tardive dystonia, or generalized torsion dystonia. Alcohol may temporarily decrease some forms of dystonia.

We report six patients with dystonia-parkinsonism syndrome having a common characteristic clinical course of dystonia with subsequent development of levodopa-responsive parkinsonism. Various types of dystonic symptoms were observed such as hemidystonia, torticollis, axial dystonia, focal dystonia, or cranial dystonia (Meige's syndrome). Blepharospasm is a focal dystonia characterized by involuntary eye closure due to abnormal contraction of orbicular eyelid muscles. When blepharospasm is associated to the presence of involuntary oromandibular movements, it is termed Meige syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of deglutition alterations in patients with concurrent blepharospasm and Meige syndrome. INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ovarian fibromas are benign tumours arising from the connective tissue of the ovarian cortex, classified into three pathological subtypes: fibroma, thecoma, and fibrothecoma. Their diagnosis is complicated by their solid nature and potential association with ascites and pleural effusion, resembling Meigs syndrome. Pleural effusions associated with ovarian tumors are not always malignant. Neoplastic etiology of pleural efussion needs histopathological confirmation. We present three cases that illustrate various etiologies for pleural effusions in patients with ovarian tumors: thromboembolism, malignancy and Meigs syndrome. For these patients, it is essential to establish the correct etiology of the pleurisy, since it may change the therapeutic approach. All the cases must be carefully assessed and all the efforts must be done by a multidisciplinary team in order to offer the best solution for each case.

We discuss the etiology of 100 spasmodic dysphonia patients. Seventy-one patients had underlying essential tremor, 25 had Meige's syndrome, 12 were hypothyroid, and 27 had either a functional disturbance or focal dystonia. Six patients had intermittent breathy dysphonia. A large corpus of spasmodic dysphonia patients have organic neurolaryngeal disease.

Dystonia as cause of pharyngo-laryngeal motility disorders has not been adequately considered in most clinical ENT practices. This case study of a patient with spasmodic torticollis, Meige's syndrome and pharyngo-laryngeal motility disorder was found to be due to dystonia as the underlying cause. The possibility of local symptomatic therapy with botulinum toxin injections has currently provided the physician with an effective means for alleviating the disorder.
