A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on episodic memory.

BACKGROUND: In the past decade, several studies have examined the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on long-term episodic memory formation and retrieval. These studies yielded conflicting results, likely due to differences in stimulation parameters, experimental design and outcome measures. OBJECTIVES: In this work we aimed to assess the robustness of tDCS effects on long-term episodic memory using a meta-analytical approach. METHODS: We conducted four meta-analyses to analyse the effects of anodal and cathodal tDCS on memory accuracy and response times. We also used

Alcohol and pharmacologically similar sedatives impair encoding and facilitate consolidation of both recollection and familiarity in episodic memory.

Alcohol and other pharmacologically similar sedatives (i.e., GABAA positive allosteric modulators or PAMs) impair the encoding of new episodic memories but retroactively facilitate the consolidation of recently encoded memories. These effects are consistent for recollection (i.e., the retrieval of details) but some mixed results have been reported for familiarity (i.e., a feeling of knowing a stimulus was presented). Here, with dual-process models, we reanalyzed prior work testing the effects of GABAA PAMs at encoding or consolidation. Contrary to previous conclusions, we show that GABAA PAMs

Family history and APOE4 risk for Alzheimer's disease impact the neural correlates of episodic memory by early midlife.

Episodic memory impairment is a consistent, pronounced deficit in pre-clinical stages of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Individuals with risk factors for AD exhibit altered brain function several decades prior to the onset of AD-related symptoms. In the current event-related fMRI study of spatial context memory we tested the hypothesis that middle-aged adults (MA; 40-58 yrs) with a family history of late onset AD (MA+ FH), or a combined + FH and apolipoprotein E ε4 allele risk factors for AD (MA+ FH + APOE4), will exhibit differences in encoding and retrieval-related brain activity, comp

Episodic memory in former professional football players with a history of concussion: an event-related functional neuroimaging study.

Previous research has demonstrated that sport-related concussions can have short-term effects on cognitive processes, but the long-term consequences are less understood and warrant more research. This study was the first to use event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine long-term differences in neural activity during memory tasks in former athletes who have sustained multiple sport-related concussions. In an event-related fMRI study, former football players reporting multiple sport-related concussions (i.e., three or more) were compared with players who reported fewe

Involvement of NMDA receptors in both MPTP-induced neuroinflammation and deficits in episodic-like memory in Wistar rats.

Hyper-activation of glutamatergic activity and deficits in episodic memory has been observed in Parkinson's disease (PD). This study was intended to clarify the effects of D-cycloserine (DCS), a partial agonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, on neuroinflammation and deficits in episodic-like memory in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD animal model. Male Wistar rats were stereotaxically administered with MPTP into the substantia nigra pars compacta. Starting 1 day after the lesion, animals were treated daily with DCS (0, 5, or 10mg/kg/day; i.p.). Thir

Impact of emotional salience on episodic memory in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show episodic memory deficits especially in complex memory tasks. We investigated the neural correlates of memory formation in ADHD and their modulation by stimulus salience. METHODS: We recorded event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging during an episodic memory paradigm with neutral and emotional pictures in 12 male ADHD subjects and 12 healthy adolescents. RESULTS: Emotional salience did significantly augment memory performance in ADHD patients. Successful encoding of neutral pictures was associated with a

Changes in Tryptophan Catabolite (TRYCAT) Pathway Patterning Are Associated with Mild Impairments in Declarative Memory in Schizophrenia and Deficits in Semantic and Episodic Memory Coupled with Increased False-Memory Creation in Deficit Schizophrenia.

Evidence indicates that schizophrenia and in particular negative symptoms and deficit schizophrenia are accompanied by neurocognitive impairments and changes in the patterning of the tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) pathway. This cross-sectional study was carried out to examine the associations between cognitive functions (as measured with Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease (CERAD)) and TRYCAT pathway patterning in patients with (n = 40) and without (n = 40) deficit schizophrenia and normal controls (n = 40). Cognitive measures were assessed with the Verbal Fluency Test (

Hippocampal Volume and Episodic Associative Memory Identify Memory Risk in Subjective Cognitive Decline Individuals in the CIMA-Q Cohort, Regardless of Cognitive Reserve Level and APOE4 Status.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) was proposed to identify older adults who complain about their memory but perform within a normal range on standard neuropsychological tests. Persons with SCD are at increased risk of dementia meaning that some SCD individuals experience subthreshold memory decline due to an underlying progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: Our main goal was to determine whether hippocampal volume and APOE4, which represent typical AD markers, predict inter-individual differences in memory performance among SCD individuals and can be used to identify

Few-shot cross-episode adaptive memory for metal surface defect semantic segmentation.

Few-shot semantic segmentation has gained significant attention in metal surface defect detection due to its ability to segment unseen object classes with only a few annotated defect samples. Previous methods constrained to single-episode training suffer from limited adaptability in semantic description of defect regions and coarse segmentation granularity. In this paper, we propose an episode-adaptive memory network (EAMNet) that specifically addresses subtle variances between episodes during training. The episode adaptive memory unit (EAMU) leverages an adaptive factor to model semantic depe

Relational memory structure among prior neutral episodes guides Pavlovian threat responses.

Learning about danger through exposure to harmful events relies on Pavlovian conditioning, which enables individuals to prepare for potential threats when encountering warning signals in the future. Sensory preconditioning further shows that defensive significance can extend to neutral cues associated with a subsequently conditioned stimulus, even when those cues have never themselves been paired with an aversive outcome. Here, we asked whether this principle extends to a relational memory structure assembled across separate neutral experiences, and whether cues closer to the conditioned threa

Adding Meaning to Memories: How Parietal Cortex Combines Semantic Content with Episodic Experience.

Neuroimaging studies of human memory have consistently found that univariate responses in parietal cortex track episodic experience with stimuli (whether stimuli are 'old' or 'new'). More recently, pattern-based fMRI studies have shown that parietal cortex also carries information about the semantic content of remembered experiences. However, it is not well understood how memory-based and content-based signals are integrated within parietal cortex. Here, in humans (males and females), we used voxel-wise encoding models and a recognition memory task to predict the fMRI activity patterns evoked

Individual differences in the frequency of voluntary & involuntary episodic memories, future thoughts, and counterfactual thoughts.

Voluntary and involuntary mental time travel can take the form of episodic memory, episodic future thinking, and episodic counterfactual thinking. This study uses an individual-differences approach to understand why people engage in these forms of mental time travel. The individual-differences variables include trait-level personality, boredom proneness, depression, anxiety, stress, emotion regulation, mindfulness, mind-wandering, positive and negative affect, rumination, optimism, thinking styles, and time perspective. Across two studies, our results indicate that individual differences under…

Verbal memory improvement in first-episode psychosis APOE-ε4 carriers: a pleiotropic effect?

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory impairment is a core feature in schizophrenia even at early stages of the disease, but its etiopathogenesis is not fully understood. The APOE-ε4 is the main genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Our primary goal was to ascertain whether APOE-ε4 status had a pleiotropic effect in early stages of the illness. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A total of 86 first-episode psychosis (FEP) outpatients and 39 healthy volunteers were recruited. Demographic and clinical data, APOE genotyping, and a neuropsychological test battery including the California Verbal Lear

Memory problems after ischemic heart disease episodes: effects of stress, benzodiazepines and smoking.

Post-IHD episode memory problems and their correlates were investigated among 157 male ischemic heart disease patients under the age of 65. Twenty-five per cent of these patients reported memory difficulties originating during the year following admission to hospital. Of the wide variety of socio-demographic factors, measures of disease severity, and lifestyle variables evaluated, only three differentiated those patients with post-IHD episode memory problems from patients with no memory difficulties. These three were: quitting smoking during the year following hospitalization, using psychotrop

Modeling complex narrative memory via sentence recognition: A marriage of distributional semantic models and an episodic model (MINERVA 2).

Recent research has integrated representations from distributional semantic models (DSMs) with traditional episodic memory models. While these integrated frameworks show promise in modeling single-word recognition, their applicability to the recognition of full sentences-particularly those embedded in complex narrative contexts-remains tentative. In this study, participants read short narratives and completed an OLD/NEW sentence recognition task, administered either immediately or after a delay of >10 hours. The recognition test contained four types of sentence probes: verbatim (matching the n

Targeting C/EBPβ/ Calbindin 1 pathway bolsters the neural resilience to tau pathology and improves tau-impaired episodic memory.

Intracellular accumulation of tau protein is a defining feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is closely associated with episodic memory loss. In our previous report, we highlighted the high susceptibility of ventral hippocampal Calbindin1- neurons in the dorsal part of ventral hippocampal CA1 (dvCA1Calb1- neurons) to tau pathology in AD. However, it remains unclear whether and how dvCA1Calb1+ neurons are also vulnerable during the chronic and progressive process of AD. In this study, we characterized dvCA1Calb1+ neurons in terms of circuit connections and behavioral phenotypes under physiol

Common and distinct plasma proteomic signature of aerobic and motor physical activity interventions and their link to episodic memory.

Aging is accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation which has been associated with cognitive decline. Physical activity might regulate plasma levels of inflammatory-related proteins and may contribute to cognitive benefits, although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This exploratory secondary analysis aimed to evaluate whether different physical activity modalities were associated with distinct inflammatory-related plasma proteomic signatures in healthy older adults and to explore whether these proteomic changes were associated with changes in cognitive performance. Disentangling the role of executive function and episodic memory in older adults' performance on dynamic theory of mind tasks.

Theory of mind is a core social cognitive ability, and declines over the lifespan. Prior work examining the mechanisms underlying older adults' theory of mind deficits has yielded heterogenous results. One reason for this might be a general reliance on static, rather than dynamic, stimuli. Because dynamic measures may best capture everyday theory of mind engagement, the current study examined whether executive function and/or episodic memory - the primary mechanisms examined in prior work - predicted older adults' static and dynamic theory of mind performance. In Study 1, 153 older adults comp
