A mentorship model for robotic-assisted navigation in pediatric spine surgery.

Robotic-assisted navigation (RAN) systems improve pedicle screw placement accuracy, yet a significant learning curve persists. We implemented a mentorship model, pairing a single early-career attending spine surgeon (mentee) with an experienced, attending spine surgeon (mentor). This study evaluates the feasibility and safety of implementing a structured mentorship model for pediatric robotic-assisted spinal fusion. A retrospective review of patients ≤ 21 years with idiopathic scoliosis undergoing robot-assisted posterior spinal fusion was performed over 38 months. Operative outcomes were comp

Dynamic Augmented Reality Cues for Telementoring in Laparoscopic Surgery: Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical telementoring enables a remote expert surgeon (mentor) to guide an operating surgeon (mentee) during surgery and facilitates the transfer of surgical skills. However, commonly used audio and static visual cues are inadequate to demonstrate complex tool-tissue interactions. To overcome this limitation, dynamic augmented reality (AR)-based visual cues are overlayed on the operative field to demonstrate precise instrument movements. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to evaluate dynamic AR cues and identify the most suitable cue that effectively demonstrates the requi

"Building the boat while sailing" - adapting towards telementoring literacy.

BACKGROUND: As telemedicine becomes a core component of modern healthcare, its effective application involves more than just the use of digital tools. An evolving skill set is required for current and future clinicians to adapt to this environment. Telementoring is a subset of telemedicine that involves clinician-to-clinician interaction, providing remote expert guidance in clinical care and medical education, with the potential to reduce global disparities. Yet, how trainees and mentors adapt to this virtual setting for effective learning remains unclear. To generate transferable insights acr

Stakeholder Perspectives on a Community-Based Peer-Led Biomedical HIV Prevention Intervention for Women Who Engage in Sex Work in Southwestern Uganda: Results from a Qualitative Study.

HIV prevalence among Ugandan women who engage in sex work (WESW) is 31%, yet uptake of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is suboptimal due to multiple factors, including stigma and barriers to accessing healthcare. "Peer mentors" (peer leaders within WESW networks) could facilitate community-based delivery of biomedical HIV prevention products for WESW. We conducted formative research with key stakeholders to refine a potential community-based, peer mentor-led PrEP/PEP intervention. From July-August 2023, we conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) and ke

Transition mentorship for spina bifida patients with the JUMP program: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The transition from pediatric to adult care is challenging for patients and families with spina bifida (SB). Lifelong care relationships yield to new care environments that are typically larger, less personal, and less engaged with the nuances of SB care. Adolescence and young adulthood are often characterized by personal and psychological stresses due to factors independent of illness or chronic medical complexity. Surveys have demonstrated that transition is associated with uncertainty, anxiety, and elevated risk of adverse events for many SB patients. To help mitigate this, the a
