The middle interhemispheric variant of holoprosencephaly.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The middle interhemispheric variant of holoprosencephaly (MIH) is a rare malformation in which the cerebral hemisphe … abnormalities. The cerebral parenchyma, hypothalami, caudate nuclei, lentiform nuclei, thalami, and mesencephalon were examined for the degree of midline separation (cleavage) of the two hemispheres. The orbits, olfactory apparati, and presence or absence of a dorsal cyst were also assessed. RESULTS: In all patients, by definition, midportions of the cerebral …

Infragalenic triangle as a gateway to dorsal midbrain and posteromedial thalamic lesions: descriptive and quantitative analysis of microsurgical anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: Anatomical triangles provide neurosurgeons with the specificity required to access deep targets, supplementing more general instructions, such as craniotomy and approach. The infragalenic triangle (IGT), bordered by the basal vein of Rosenthal (BVR), precentral cerebellar vein (PCV), and the quadrangular lobule of the cerebellum, is one of a system of anatomical triangles recently introduced to guide dissection to brainstem cavernous malformations and has not been described in detail. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the anatomical parameters of the IGT and present key nua

Organization of serotonergic system in Sphaerotheca breviceps (Dicroglossidae) tadpole brain.

The monoaminergic neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is known to be involved in several physiological, behavioural and neuroendocrine functions in vertebrates. In this study, we investigated the distribution of 5-HT neuronal system in the central nervous system (CNS) of Sphaerotheca breviceps tadpoles at metamorphic climax stage. In the telencephalon, there was no 5-HT-immunoreactive (5-HT-ir) perikarya, but conspicuous fibres were observed in the olfactory bulb, pallium, subpallium and amygdala complexes. The preoptic area showed dense 5-HT-ir somata and cerebrospinal fluid contactin

Proximal dendritic localization of NALCN channels underlies tonic and burst firing in nigral dopaminergic neurons.

In multipolar nigral dopamine (DA) neurons, the highly excitable proximal dendritic compartments (PDCs) and two Na+ -permeable leak channels, TRPC3 and NALCN, play a key role in pacemaking. However, the causal link between them is unknown. Here we report that the proximal dendritic localization of NALCN underlies pacemaking and burst firing in DA neurons. Our morphological analysis of nigral DA neurons reveals that TRPC3 is ubiquitously expressed in the whole somatodendritic compartment, but NALCN is localized within the PDCs. Blocking either TRPC3 or NALCN channels abolished pacemaking. Howev

Basal ganglia reign through downstream control of motor centers in midbrain and brain stem while updating cortex with efference copy information.

In this issue of Neuron, McElvain et al. (2021) show that the major output of the basal ganglia, the substantia nigra pars reticulata, targets no fewer than 42 midbrain and brainstem structures and conveys an efference copy of the downstream commands back via thalamus to the cortex and striatum.

Cytoarchitectonic subdivisions in the subtectal midbrain of the lizard Gallotia galloti.

Contemporary study of molecular patterning in the vertebrate midbrain is handicapped by the lack of a complete topological map of the diverse neuronal complexes differentiated in this domain. The relatively less deformed reptilian midbrain was chosen for resolving this fundamental issue in a way that can be extrapolated to other tetrapods. The organization of midbrain centers was mapped topologically in terms of longitudinal columns and cellular strata on transverse, Nissl-stained sections in the lizard Gallotia galloti. Four columns extend along the whole length of the midbrain. In dorsoventr

[Laryngoscopic findings in dysphonia following traumatic midbrain syndrome].

26 patients with traumatic voice disorders were examined laryngoscopically. During the initial mute stage, reflex vocal cord movement could be detected but no intentional movement. A gradual approximation of the vocal cords led to a narrowing of the glottic aperture so that whispering but not voiced phonation, was possible (stage of whispering). The third stage was characterized by the rapid development of a laryngeal (and pharyngeal) spasticity, identifiable by shortened and thickened vocal folds, an increased approximation of the ventricular folds and in a more dorsal position of the epiglot

Suboccipital Atretic Cephalocele as a Marker for Joubert-Plus Syndrome: An Extended Phenotype of the CPLANE1 Gene Mutation.

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by intellectual disability, hypotonia, and an abnormal breathing patter … ciated with other central nervous system abnormalities such as the Dandy-Walker malformation in the mesencephalon or caudal fourth ventricle. In patients with atretic encephaloceles, the possibility of an underlying brain malformation or a genetic disorder should always be considered.

Embryonic Valproate Exposure Alters Mesencephalic Dopaminergic Neurons Distribution and Septal Dopaminergic Gene Expression in Domestic Chicks.

In recent years, the role of the dopaminergic system in the regulation of social behavior is being progressively outlined, and dysfunctions … bution of DA neurons, without changing the expression levels of several dopaminergic markers in the mesencephalon. We also investigated a potential consequence of this altered DA neuronal distribution in the septum, a social brain area previously associated to social behavior in several vertebrate species, describing alterations in the expression of genes linke …

Oculomotor Nerve Palsy as a Presenting Symptom of Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Infectious Mononucleosis: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is the main cause of infectious mononucleosis (IM), which typically presents with a triad of feve … enhancement of the right oculomotor nerve as well as pial enhancement adjacent to the right ventral mesencephalon. A review of the literature identified 5 further patients with isolated oculomotor nerve palsy as the presenting symptom of unfolding primary EBV infection. MRIs performed in 3 of those 5 patients revealed a pattern of contrast enhancement similar t …

Diversity of central oxytocinergic projections.

Localization and distribution of hypothalamic neurons expressing the nonapeptide oxytocin has been extensively studied. Their projections to … lobe. Central projections of oxytocinergic neurons extend to portions of the limbic system, to the mesencephalon and to the brain stem. Such projections have been associated with control of behaviors, central stress response as well as motor and vegetative functions. Activity of the different oxytocinergic systems seems to be malleable to functional status, st …

Neurotrophic factor-based strategies to enhance survival and differentiation of neural progenitor cells toward the dopaminergic phenotype.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that presents with hallmark clinical symptoms of tremor at rest, bradykinesia, and … of rat ventral mesencephalic (VM) tissue. Using organotypic explant cultures of fetal human ventral mesencephalon, we observed that NT-4/5 and GDNF as single factors, or in combination on DAergic neurons, increased survival and number of tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactive neurons as well as the dopamine content in the culture medium. The application of specifi …

Complex neurological symptoms in bilateral thalamic stroke due to Percheron artery occlusion.

The artery of Percheron is a rare anatomical variant where a single thalamic perforating artery arises from the proximal posterior cerebral artery (P1 segment) between the basilar artery and the posterior communicating artery and supplies the rostral mesencephalon and both paramedian territories of the thalami. Almost one-third of human brains present this variant. Occlusion of the artery of Percheron mostly results in a bilateral medial thalamic infarction, which usually manifests with altered consciousness (including coma), vertical gaze paresis, and cognitive disturbance. The presentation i…
