Expanded analysis of injury mortality among unionized construction workers.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the utility of expanding the number and precision of injury categories used in previous occupational mortality studies, this study reanalyzed data from four previous studies of unionized construction workers (construction laborers, ironworkers, sheet metal workers, and operating engineers), by expanding the number of injury categories from 6 to 33. METHODS: Proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) were computed using the distribution of deaths from the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance System, a mortality surveillance system from 28 states, as a comparison. A b…

Sensitive methods for assessment of lung health in welders and controls.

BACKGROUND: Welders are exposed to gas and particle emissions that can cause severe lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. It is difficult to detect COPD early and therefore mitigating measures may be delayed. The aim of this study was to investigate lung health in welders and evaluate new sensitive methods with potential to assess early onset pulmonary changes in occupational settings. METHODS: This study assessed the lung health and symptoms in active welders (n = 28) and controls (n = 17). Lung measurements

Statistical modeling to determine sources of variability in exposures to welding fumes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Exposures to total particulate matter (TP) and manganese (Mn) received by workers during welding and allied hot processes were analyzed to assess the sources and magnitudes of variability. METHODS: Compilation of data from several countries identified 2065 TP and 697 Mn measurements for analysis. Linear mixed models were used to determine fixed effects due to different countries, industries and trades, process characteristics, and the sampling regimen, and to estimate components of variance within workers (both intraday and interday), between workers (within worksites), and a

Manganese and Movement Disorders: A Review.

Scientific and technological advances achieved with industrial expansion have led to an ever-increasing demand for heavy metals. This demand has, in turn, led to increased contamination of soil, water and air with these metals. Chronic exposure to metals may be detrimental not only to occupational workers but also to the nonoccupational population exposed to these metals. Manganese (Mn), a commonly used heavy metal, is an essential cofactor for many enzymatic processes that drive biological functions. However, it is also a potential source of neurotoxicity, particularly in the field of movemen

[Usefulness of determining urinary markers of early renal damage for monitoring nephrotoxicity during occupational exposure to mercury vapors].

Using nephelometry, concentration of albumin, IgG, transferrin, retinol binding protein (RBP) alpha 1-microglobulin were determined in urine of 83 males with history of occupational exposure to metallic mercury vapours from 0.6 to 37 years, and in 30 non-exposed males. The weighted average of mercury air concentrations was 0.028 mg/m3. Duration of occupational exposure to mercury vapours did not elevate urine excretion of proteins. The urine concentration of proteins in question were higher (especially beta 2-m) in workers with urine mercury concentration between 51 and 150 microliter-1 and hi

Occupational associations among British Columbia male cancer patients.

In a study of 6,389 male cancer patients diagnosed and treated at the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia from 1950-1975, several associations were detected between occupation and specific cancers. Elevated risks for lung cancer were seen in miners, metal processors and machinists, while a reduced risk was seen in farmers. Lip cancer excesses were detected in individuals involved in several outdoor occupations, and melanoma excesses were seen for three groups of predominantly indoor workers. These results confirm previous findings in the literature, whereas the following associations hav

Color vision: a sensitive indicator of exposure to neurotoxins.

In the last 15 years an increasing number of studies have investigated color discrimination in workers exposed to various neurotoxins. Color vision was generally evaluated using the Lanthony D-15 desaturated panel (D-15 d), a test suited to identify mild acquired impairments, that can be easily performed at the workplace. In most studies, results were quantitatively expressed using the method of Bowman or that of Vingrys and King-Smith: the former is the most widely reported, while the latter gives information on the type of color defect. Applying D-15 d, or other color perception tests, impai

Indicators of matrix dependent variation in effective dose for chromium and nickel aerosol exposures.

Inhaled particulates containing Cr and Ni are partially cleared or dissolved thus contributing to short-term internal exposures and partial retention in airways and airspaces. The retained fraction may continuously contribute to internal exposure after external exposure has ceased, through intra- and extracellular chemical processes which continuously liberate various metallic species; i.e. via an active deposit. Recent experiments with Ni and Cr compounds, and freshly produced welding fumes, which contain Ni and Cr, demonstrate a strong dependence of the distribution of these metals on oxidat

Occupationally Relevant Zinc- and Copper-Containing Metal Fumes Inhibit Human THP-1 Macrophage TNF and IL-6 Responses to Bacterial Stimuli.

Metal workers have an increased risk of severe lobar pneumonia due to exposure to metal fume particles, which lead to recent pneumococcal vaccination recommendations. To investigate the effects of metal fume-derived zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper oxide (CuO) particles on airway immune responses, human THP-1-derived macrophages are exposed in vitro to the bacterial pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lipoteichoic Acid (LTA), or peptidoglycan (PGN), together with particle suspensions. Particles are generated through metal inert gas (MIG) soldering. Spectrometric…

Chronic occupational exposure to lead and its impact on oral health.

Chronic Lead exposure favours the formation of cheilitis, fissures, ulcers and epithelial desquamation of the tongue, palate and other parts of the oral mucous membranes. The tissues of oral cavity may be affected by toxic agents either by direct action as in exposure to sulfuric acid fumes or through systemic exposure as in poisoning with heavy metals e.g. lead.. The Present study aimed to investigate the oral health condition of industrial workers exposed to lead in Alexandria governorate. The samples included all workers chronically exposed to lead fumes or dust in a storage battery plant (
