Contribution of metals to brain MR signal intensity: review articles.

Various metals are essential nutrients in humans, and metal shortages lead to a variety of deficiency diseases. Metal concentration abnormalities may cause metal deposition in the brain, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most potent and sensitive technique now available for detecting metal deposition given the difficulties associated with performing brain tissue biopsy. However, the brain contains many kinds of metals that affect the signal intensity of MRI, which has led to numerous misunderstandings in the history of metal analysis. We reviewed the history of brain metal analysis w…

Pollution by metals: Is there a relationship in glycemic control?

There are evidences of environmental pollution and health effects. Metals are pollutants implicated in systemic toxicity. One of the least studied effects, but which is currently becoming more important, is the effect of metals on glycemic control. Metals have been implicated as causes of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress and are associated to obesity, hyperglycemia and even diabetes. Arsenic, iron, mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel have been studied as a risk factor for hyperglycemia and diabetes. There is another group of metals that causes hypoglycemia such as vanadium, chromium, zi…

Silver and other metals in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

Disturbance in the functioning of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract can critically affect the health and even the life of the whole organism. Several factors, both exo- and endogenous may contribute to the dysregulation of homeostasis in the digestive system, including genetic background, ingestion of highly processed food, exposition to environmental pollution or chronic stress, and changes in gut microflora, to name just a few. An important number of these factors rely on metals, which often play a dual, stimulatory and inhibitory role in crucial physiological processes. In this paper, we focu…

Biological metals and metal-targeting compounds in major neurodegenerative diseases.

Multiple abnormalities occur in the homeostasis of essential endogenous brain biometals in age-related neurodegenerative disorders, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As a result, metals both accumulate in microscopic proteinopathies, and can be deficient in cells or cellular compartments. Therefore, bulk measurement of metal content in brain tissue samples reveal only the "tip of the iceberg", with most of the important changes occurring on a microscopic and biochemical level. Each of the major proteins implicated in these disorde…

Separation of metals and phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash.

Microbial acidification of incinerated sewage sludge ash and dissolution of metals from the acidified ash were investigated using a semi-batch reactor at different solid retention times (SRTs). The average pH values ranged from 0.91 to 1.2 at SRTs longer than 10 days, whereas the reduction of SRT to 4 days resulted in an increase in the pH value to about 2. The dissolution efficiencies of Al, As, Cd, Cu and Mn were greater than 60% at a SRT of 4 days. Moreover, the effect of pH on precipitation of metals and P (dissolution of 80%) in the filtrate removed from the acidified sewage ash suspensio…

Blood metals concentration in type 1 and type 2 diabetics.

Mechanisms for the onset of diabetes and the development of diabetic complications remain under extensive investigations. One of these mechanisms is abnormal homeostasis of metals, as either deficiency or excess of metals, can contribute to certain diabetic outcomes. Therefore, this paper will report the blood levels of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in subjects with type 1 diabetes (n = 192, mean age 48.8 years, mean disease duration 20.6 years), type 2 diabetes (n = 68, mean age 68.4 years, mean diseas…

Contact sensitivity to metals (chromium, cobalt and nickel) in childhood.

Metals, especially nickel, are the most common contact allergens in children. Recent data has shown increased incidence of allergy in industrialized countries. Sensitization can occur at any age, even in neonates. Costume jewelry, particularly earrings, is linked to increased sensitization to nickel. Sensitization to cobalt often occurs by the use of costume jewelry. The most common source of sensitization to chromium is leather. Due to the absence of a specific therapy, the main treatment is to identify and avoid the responsible allergens. This article presents an updated view on the epidemio…

Geophagy and potential health implications: geohelminths, microbes and heavy metals.

The practice of geophagy (soil-eating) is widespread among pregnant and breast-feeding women in sub-Saharan Africa. To assess some of the potential risks accompanying the consumption of geophagic material, we analysed contamination with bacteria, fungi, and geohelminths as well as heavy metals (lead, mercury and cadmium) in 88 African geophagic soil samples, which were purchased in Central, West and East Africa, Europe and the United States. Median microbial viable counts of positive samples were 440 cfu/g (maximum 120,000 cfu/g). The median metal concentrations were 40 mg/kg lead (up to 148 m…

Anatomical distribution of heavy metals in the scallop Pecten maximus.

This paper studied the anatomical distribution of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), silver (Ag), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the scallop Pecten maximus and the possible implications in terms of shellfish management. Six organs were analysed: mantle, gills, foot, digestive gland, kidney and gonad. On the basis of their anatomical distribution, two groups of metals were able to be distinguished: the first included Pb, Hg, Ni, Zn and Ag; and the second comprised the four other metals studied. The metals in the first group preferentially accumulated …

Allergy to metals as a cause of orthopedic implant failure.

BACKGROUND: A constantly growing social demand for orthopedic implants has been observed in Poland. It is estimated that about 5% of patients experience post-operation complications. It is suspected that in this group of patients an allergic reaction contributes to rejection of metal implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aim of our study was to assess contact allergy to metals in 14 people (9 women and 5 men) suffering from poor implant tolerance. In some of them, recurrent skin eruptions, generalized or nearby implants, have occurred and in 3 patients skin fistula was observed. These complain…

Breathing metals as a way of life: geobiology in action.

Many microbes have the ability to reduce transition metals, coupling this reduction to the oxidation of energy sources in a dissimilatory fashion. Because of their abundance, iron and manganese have been extensively studied, and it is well established that reduction of Mn and Fe account for significant turnover of organic carbon in many environments. In addition, many of the dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB) also reduce other metals, including toxic metals like Cr(VI), and radioactive contaminants like U(VI), raising the expectations that these processes can be used for bioremediati…

Ход выполнения metals in vertebral columns of deep-sea teleost fish.

Deep-sea teleost fish were collected from the Sagami Bay near a deep fissure in the Pacific Ocean. Fish were identified as Chlorophthalmis albatrosis, Engyprosopan xystrias, Satyrichthys hians, Ventrifossa garmani, and Halieutaea stellata. The Etmopterus lucifer is not a teleost, but a deep-sea shark. Just after being caught and fixed in neutral 20% formol, the vertebral column was resected and prepared for measurement by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Trace elements were found to be Al, Si, Ti, Fe, Cu, Cd, Zn, and Hg at micrograms per gram levels. Major elements were

[Transition metals and nitric oxide production in human endothelial cells].

The bioavailability of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) is regulated by transition metals but their mechanisms of action on NO synthesis and degradation are not clearly understood. Using differential pulse amperometry and NO microelectrodes, local NO concentration was measured at the surface of cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) stimulated by histamine or thrombin in the presence of transition metal chelators. The agonist-activated NO release required both extracellular Ca2+ and transition metals. In the presence of 1 mM external Ca2+, a low concentration of EGTA (5 microM) …

Heavy metals of relevance to human health induce genomic instability.

Heavy metals used in medical prostheses or present in water supplies or tobacco can build up in tissues and blood and are well known to produce toxic effects. Normally, legislative controls on the levels of these substances are determined by reference to the acute toxicity data. This paper shows that cadmium and nickel can produce delayed effects in human cells in vitro, which are characteristic of genomic instability. The effects occur even at levels where no acute toxic effects can be demonstrated. Genomic instability can be demonstrated by persistent induction of cytogenetic abnormalities a…
