Correlation of sensitization to food allergens in Iranian patients with migraine and tension headaches.

OBJECTIVES: Headache is one of the most common neurological disorders around the world. Previous studies have proposed associations of food allergies with headaches. Therefore, this study evaluated the frequency of sensitization to food allergens in patients with migraine and tension headaches and their correlations with these disorders. METHODS: The study subjects consisted of 20 patients with migraine headache and 20 subjects with tension headache. Headache disorders were confirmed by a specialist. Food allergen sensitization was diagnosed by skin prick test (SPT) or radioallergosorbent tes

Stigma and Migraine: Developing Effective Interventions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Migraine and other primary headache disorders do not receive adequate research funding, medical resources, or other forms of structural support relative to their prevalence and the disability they cause. In recent research, scholars have argued that stigma associated with headache disorders explains some of this discrepancy. This review will discuss (1) the factors contributing to stigma toward migraine and other primary headache disorders, (2) how structural and enacted stigma may perpetuate individual disability, (3) the impact of internalized stigma, and (4) interventions

Pediatric migraine variants: a review of epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome.

Pediatric migraine variants, previously known as childhood periodic syndromes, migraine equivalents, or migraine precursors, are a group of periodic or paroxysmal disorders occurring in patients who also have migraine with or without aura, or who have an increased likelihood of developing migraine. They have common key clinical features including periodic or paroxysmal character, normal neurological examination between attacks, family history of migraine, and clinical evolution to classic types of migraine. This article aims to review the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of the pedi

The relationship between migraine and rosacea: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective To systematically review the association between migraine and rosacea. Background Migraine is a complex disorder with episodes of headache, nausea, photo- and phonophobia. Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition with flushing, erythema, telangiectasia, papules, and pustules. Both are chronic disorders with exacerbations of symptoms almost exclusively in areas innervated by the trigeminal nerve. Previous studies found an association between these disorders. We review these findings, provide a meta-analysis, and discuss possible pathophysiological commonalities. Methods A search thro

Beyond neurovascular: migraine as a dysfunctional neurolimbic pain network.

No single model of migraine explains all of the known features of the disorder. Migraine has recently been characterized as an abnormality in pain-modulating circuits in the brainstem. The periaqueductal gray appears to have a critical role in migraine genesis and has been labeled the "migraine generator." The concept of a "pain matrix," rather than a specific locus of pain, is widely accepted in the pain literature and offers a new dimension to understanding migraine. Recent neuroimaging studies of migraineurs suggest altered functional connectivity between brainstem pain-modulating circuits

Migraine variants and beyond.

Migraine is amongst the oldest of diseases known to mankind. Migraine is a heterogenous entity, usually characterised by periodic attacks of headache on one or both sides of the head. These may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity of the eyes to light (photophobia), increased sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), dizziness, blurred vision, cognitive disturbances, and other symptoms. Migraines are not always preceded by an aura and some migraines may not include headache. If migraine does not manifest itself in the form of headache but in some other form such as paroxysmal ep

Shared mechanisms and comorbidities in neurologic and psychiatric disorders.

Migraine may be comorbid with several other neurologic and psychiatric conditions, including mood disorders (eg, depression, anxiety, panic disorder), epilepsy, stroke, and essential tremor. Comorbidity presents physicians with opportunities and challenges for both diagnosis and treatment. All diseases must be considered, and therapeutic strategies may need to be modified to avoid potential drug interactions. Comorbidities also may provide clues to the pathophysiologies and any shared mechanisms of the two disorders. Longitudinal studies have demonstrated a bidirectional influence between migr

Shared comorbidity of depression, migraine, insomnia, and fibromyalgia in a population-based sample.

BACKGROUND: Depression, migraine, insomnia, and fibromyalgia are reportedly comorbidities. Nevertheless, no study has evaluated the comorbidity of all four of these disorders. This study aimed to investigate the comorbidity of these four disorders. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data of the Circannual Change in Headache and Sleep study, an online nationwide population-based survey. Validated questionnaires were used to diagnose the disorders and measure quality of life. The change of clinical characteristics by addition of any comorbidity was analyzed using the Jonckhe

Comorbidity of migraine with ADHD in adults.

BACKGROUND: Migraine and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have been found to be associated in child and adolescent cohorts; however, the association has not been assessed in adults or otherwise healthy population. Assessing the comorbidity between ADHD and migraine may clarify the etiopathology of both diseases. Thus, the objective is to assess whether migraine (with and without visual disturbances) and ADHD are comorbid disorders. METHODS: Participants from the Danish Blood Donor Study (N = 26,456, age 18-65, 46% female) were assessed for migraine and ADHD using the ASRS v

The Development of Psychiatric Illness and Chemoprophylaxis of Botulinum Toxin in Migraine: A Narrative Review.

A migraine is not just a headache. It is an extremely prevalent neurological condition marked by periodic episodes of unilateral headache, with more than 10 million cases yearly. Migraine often begins at the age of puberty. It substantially impacts the brain and, consequently, psychiatric behavior linked with frequent migraine attacks that may be moderate to severe in intensity. A crucial aspect of migraine variability is comorbidity with other neurological diseases, vascular diseases, and mental illnesses. Psychiatric disorders related to migraine include anxiety disorders, panic disorder, bi

Association between migraine and mitochondria: A Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mitochondria are important organelles functioning in metabolic processes, inflammatory response and neurological disorders. Migraines are chronic and paroxysmal neurological disorders characterized by recurrent episodes of severe headache and other neurological symptoms. We explored whether mitochondria may be genetically and/or causally associated with migraine. METHODS: Summary-level statistics of mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN), 69 mitochondria related exposures and migraine with aura, migraine without aura, migraine with aura and triptan purchases, migra

Recurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: experience in 3042 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder of the inner ear with a high rate of recurrence. Vascular disorders, migraine and autoimmune disorders have been considered facilitating factors for relapsing episodes. Our aim was to assess the role of vascular disorders, migraine and anti-thyroid antibodies in patients with recurrences. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed records of 3042 patients treated for BPPV without other lifetime vertigo. Clinical data included previous vascular disorders of the central nervous system, heart disorders, migraine and recent head trau

Comorbidities of migraine.

Migraine is a common neurological disorder and can be severely disabling during attacks. The highest prevalence occurs between the ages of 25 and 55 years, potentially the most productive period of life. Migraine leads to a burden not only for the individual, but also for the family and society in general. Prior studies have found that migraine occurs together with other illnesses at a greater coincidental rate than is seen in the general population. These occurrences are called "comorbidities," which means that these disorders are interrelated with migraine. To delineate the comorbidities of

Did Martin Luther suffer from vestibular migraine?

Martin Luther (1483-1546) reported attacks of headache and of vertigo in his letters and in his lectures. The symptomatology of his headache attacks fulfilled, at least in part, the diagnostic semiological criteria of migraine. However, because we cannot be sure about the time pattern and the exclusion of other disorders that might explain the headache, the diagnosis of migraine is not final. The vertigo attacks sometimes fulfilled the criteria of Ménière's disease. Vertigo also occurred together with headache attacks fulfilling the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd editi

[Genetics of primary headache disorders in children and adolescents].

This review describes current knowledge on the genetics of primary headache disorders in children and adolescents. The heritability for recurrent headache in children and adolescents is estimated at 70%, significantly higher than the heritability for both migraine and tension-type headache in adults. Hemiplegic migraine is a rare monogenic migraine subtype with causal variants identified in CACNA1A, ATP1A2, SCN1A, and PRRT. There is very limited knowledge of genetic risk variants for children and adolescents with polygenic primary headache disorders.

[Migraine and psychosomatic comorbidity].

As a common neurological disorder (10-15% of the population), migraine is associated with numerous comorbidities, particularly other pain syndromes, mental illnesses and functional disorders. These 'psychosomatic' comorbidities increase with migraine severity. Severely affected, comorbid patients also often have a poorer response to specific migraine therapy. Interestingly, migraine and the comorbidities mentioned have a number of common aetiological or facilitating factors, e.g. genetic factors, and show a higher incidence in women and in people with previous traumatic experiences, as well as
