Effect of a Trace Mineral Injection on Performance and Trace Mineral Status of Beef Cows and Calves.

The objective was to determine the effects of an injectable trace mineral (TMI; Multimin 90) containing copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) on trace mineral status and the resulting impacts on reproduction of beef cows and the growth of their calves. Beef cows (n = 200) were assigned to receive TMI or no injection (CON) prior to calving and breeding over two consecutive years. Calves born to cows receiving TMI also received TMI at birth in both years and at 49 ± 1.3 days of age in year 1. The TMI increased (p = 0.01) liver Zn and tended (p = 0.06) to increase liver Cu con

[Vascular Calcification - Pathological Mechanism and Clinical Application - . Regulation of mineral metabolism and mineralization by FGF23].

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) decreases serum phosphate by inhibiting proximal tubular phosphate reabsorption and intestinal phosphate absorption through the reduction of serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25 (OH) (2)D] levels. Excessive actions of FGF23 cause hypophosphatemic diseases with impaired mineralization of bone. On the other hand, impaired actions of FGF23 result in hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis characterized by hyperphosphatemia and high 1,25 (OH) (2)D levels. Ectopic calcification around large joints and in blood vessels can be observed in patients with this di

Differential Aortic and Mitral Valve Interstitial Cell Mineralization and the Induction of Mineralization by Lysophosphatidylcholine In Vitro.

PURPOSE: Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is a serious condition with vast uncertainty regarding the precise mechanism leading to valve calcification. This study was undertaken to examine the role of the lipid lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) in a comparison of aortic and mitral valve cellular mineralization. METHODS: The proportion of LPC in differentially calcified regions of diseased aortic valves was determined using thin layer chromatography (TLC). Next, porcine valvular interstitial cells (pVICs) from the aortic (paVICs) and mitral valve (pmVICs) were cultured with LPC (10-1 - 105 nM)

Effect of mineral nutritional status on shoot-root partitioning of photoassimilates and cycling of mineral nutrients.

Mineral nutrients taken up by the roots are, as a rule, transported in the xylem to the shoot, and photoassimilates transported in the phloem to the roots. According to the Thornley model of photosynthate partitioning, nutrient deficiencies should favour photosynthate partitioning to the roots. Examples are cited to show that this preferential partitioning is dependent on phloem mobility and hence on nutrient cycling from shoot to roots. Thus, root growth is enhanced under nitrogen and phosphorus deficiencies, but not under deficiencies of nutrients of low mobility in the phloem, such as calci

[Vitamin and mineral deficiency in Mexico. A critical review of the state of the art. I. Mineral deficiency].

A critical analysis was conducted in 39 publications on the prevalence of trace mineral deficiencies in Mexico, published since 1950. It can be concluded that: a) Iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutrient deficiency in Mexico. It occurs in 10 to 70% of the population depending on the region of the country. Rural areas in the southern and south-eastern regions are more drastically affected studies. This deficiency occurs even though iron intake in most studies is higher than recommended. b) Clinical signs of iodine deficiency have been reported in some mountainous regions of the country. T

Mineral anisotropy in mineralized tissues is similar among species and mineral growth occurs independently of collagen orientation in rats: results from acoustic velocity measurements.

It has been reported that the mineral crystals in long bones have their c-axis aligned with the bone axis, presumably because collagen fibrils in bone also align with the bone axis. However, the predominant collagen orientation in bone often does not appear to be aligned with the mineral crystals, especially in rat primary bone. We hypothesized that mineral orientation in bone is not necessarily related to collagen orientation. An acoustic microscope was used to measure elastic constants of mineralized tissues from rat, cow, monkey, and human bone, and mineralized turkey leg tendon (MTLT). Mea

Binding characteristics of sulfonated biochar-DOM with minerals: Molecular fractionation and its facilitation to Cu(II) immobilization.

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) can interact with soil minerals, influencing the transport and immobilization of heavy metals. Sulfonated biochar (SBC), enriched with oxygen- and sulfur-containing functional groups, releases DOM (SBC-DOM) with a strong metal-binding capacity. This study investigated the fractionation behavior of SBC-DOM at mineral interfaces and its regulatory mechanism in Cu(II) immobilization, using ferrihydrite (Fh) and kaolinite (Kl) as representative minerals and Cu(II) as the target pollutant. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of Fh for SBC-D…

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Synergistic Regulation of Glucose and Clay Minerals on Polyphenol-Maillard Mediated Abiotic Humification.

The synergistic effects of glucose (Glu) concentration and clay mineral type (kaolinite [Kao], montmorillonite [Mon]) on abiotic humification via the polyphenol-Maillard reaction remain poorly understood. To address these scientific challenges, a series of controlled, sterile batch experiments was conducted. Specifically, a glucose concentration gradient (0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.24 mol/L) was established; Kao and Mon were separately introduced as mineral catalysts; and the Maillard reaction was facilitated in the presence of catechol and glycine under strictly abiotic conditions to preclude

Divergent Roles of Clay versus Iron (Hydr)oxide Minerals in Preserving Soil Organic Matter during Wildfire Heating.

The interaction between soil minerals and soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in governing carbon release and sequestration in soil, yet understanding their behavior during wildfires remains poorly understood. This study examined the evolution of humic acid (HA, a representative of SOM) under simulated wildfire heating conditions (30-900 °C) in the presence of two representative soil minerals: montmorillonite (Mnt) and ferrihydrite (Fhy). Whereas Fhy accelerated the mineralization of HA, Mnt enhanced its preservation. These disparities stemmed from variations in the surface react…

Activation of iron oxide minerals in an aquifer by humic acid to promote adsorption of organic molecules.

In aquifers, the sequestration and transformation of organic carbon are closely associated with soil iron oxides and can facilitate the release of iron ions from iron oxide minerals. There is a strong interaction between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron oxide minerals in aquifers, but the extent to which iron is activated by DOM exposure to active iron minerals in natural aquifers, the microscopic distribution of minerals on the surface, and the mechanisms involved in DOM molecular transformation are currently unclear. This study investigated the nonbiological reduction transformation a…

Mechanochemical remediation of the chlorinated compounds contaminated soil depending on the minerals inside-the most reasonable approach.

This study explored a possible destruction of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) as example of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as well as the dechlorination mechanism by directly using minerals in the soil, such as antigorite, talc and olivine. Compared with a stable quartz phase of SiO2, all three Mg silicate minerals demonstrated certain degrading capacity for HCB with different efficiency order as: antigorite > talc > olivine > SiO2 at 2 h of milling time. Interestingly, olivine exhibited a better performance than antigorite at 4 h of milling time, giving destruction percentage of 92.7% over 89.0…

Iron oxide minerals promote simultaneous bio-reduction of Cr(VI) and nitrate: Implications for understanding natural attenuation.

Nitrate and Cr(VI) coexist in aquifers, posing a potential threat to ecological environment and public health. Iron oxide minerals (hematite and magnetite) exist ubiquitously in groundwater, which are hot spots for biogeochemical transformation. However, there is still a knowledge gap anout the effect of iron oxide minerals on bioreduction of nitrate and Cr(VI). Here we observed that iron oxide minerals can significantly improve the ability of microorganisms to simultaneously reduce nitrate and Cr(VI), the reduction rates of nitrate and Cr(VI) increased by 7.3 and 8.5 times, respectively. The …
