An outbreak investigation of copra itch revealed a cluster of six suspected cases with skin dermatitis, with 11-32 years of age, belonging to a single family, between June and July 2016 in Phang Nga province, Southern Thailand. Norwegian scabies is an ectoparasitic infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei, characterized by hyperkeratotic lesions of the hands, feet, ears, and scalp, which contain many mites. An epidemic of Norwegian scabies involved 22 patients in a 25-patient ward of mentally and physically handicapped persons (mostly mongoloids). The pathogenesis of the prolific mite population is unclear, but either a specific immunologic deficit or the inability to effectively eliminate the mites by scratching is a plausible possibility.

The Yunnan red-backed vole Eothenomys miletus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) is an endemic rodent species and reservoir host of zoonoses in southwest China. OBJECTIVE: To examine the possible associations between Demodex folliculorum and a number of skin diseases.
METHODS: Standardized skin surface biopsy samples were obtained from the cheeks of 144 patients with histopathologically proven basal cell carcinoma (BCC, n = 27), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC, n = 28), melanoma (n = 23), discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE, n = 32), and rosacea (n = 34). This paper reports on ectoparasitic chigger mites found on small mammals in Yunnan Province, southwest China. Data were accumulated from 19 investigation sites (counties) between 2001 and 2009. A total of 10 222 small mammal hosts were captured and identified; these represented 62 species, 34 genera and 11 families in five orders. From the body surfaces of these 10 222 hosts, a total of 92 990 chigger mites were collected and identified microscopically.
