[The analysis of incidence of adenoid hypertrophy in children hypersensitive to dust mites].

UNLABELLED: The adenoidectomy is the most often made operation in small children but the reasons of adenoid hypertrophy are not completely explain. Some researches show that in part of children allergy can be a risk factor for adenoid hypertrophy. The main aim of this study was the analysis of adenoid hypertrophy in children with different allergic diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two separate groups of children were examined. The study group consisted of 436 children between 4 and 9 years old with allergic rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma and/or atopic dermatitis hypersensitive to house dust

Combining plant- and soil-dwelling predatory mites to optimise biological control of thrips.

The efficiency of a natural enemy combination compared to a single species release for the control of western flower thrips (WFT) Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on cucumber plants was investigated. Since a large part of F occidentalis seems to enter the soil passage, a joint release of the plant-inhabiting predatory mite Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) that feeds on thrips first-instar larvae and the soil-dwelling predatory mite Hypoaspis aculeifer (Canestrini) that preys on thrips pupae in the ground might offer a promising approach for a holistic control strategy. Therefore, two sets

[Exposure and allergy to dust mites in general and working environment in Croatia].

This paper gives a review of the most important impacts of exposure to dust mites in general and working environment on human health. The Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health in Zagreb, Croatia, has been investigating the frequency and exposure levels of allergies to pyroglyphid and non-pyroglyphid mites in Croatia for the last 10 years. Investigations were performed in general urban and rural population from the inland and coastal Croatia, and several industrial inland populations occupationally exposed to organic dusts. Mite species and levels of pyroglyphid mites allergens

Neozygites abacaridis sp. nov. (Entomophthorales), a new pathogen of phytophagous mites (Acari, Eriophyidae).

A new entomopathogenic fungus, described here as Neozygites abacaridis n. sp. (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales), has been found on the mites Abacarus hystrix, Aculodes dubius, and A. mckenziei (Acari: Eriophyidae). It differs from other Neozygites species affecting mites by its small, globose primary conidia, short-ovoid, smoky coloured capilliconidia, and very short capillary conidiophores-which are usually not longer than the spore length. This pathogen infected mite individuals in autumn (from mid-August until mid-November) on Lolium perenne, Agrostis stolonifera, and Festuca rubra. It caused

Sensitization to Dermatophagoides siboney, Blomia tropicalis, and other domestic mites in asthmatic patients.

Mite species adapted to warm, humid climates are commonly found in house dust in the tropics. In Cuba, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, D. siboney, and Blomia tropicalis are the most common and abundant mite species in house dust. To investigate the pattern of sensitization of Cuban asthmatic patients to common mite species, we skin-prick-tested (SPT) 148 patients with a clinical history of asthma and possible mite allergy, and determined specific IgE antibodies against mite allergens (D. pteronyssinus, D. farinae, D. siboney, B. tropicalis, Acarus siro, Lepidoglyphus destructor, Tyrophagus put

[Delayed hypersensitivity to house dust-storage mites Thyrophagus putrescentiae in experimental allergic dermatoses].

House dust mites and storage mites proved to be one of the main allergens causing hypersensitivity in atopic dermatitis in allergic patients. The authors reproduced experimental allergic dermatosis on the model of delayed type hypersensitivity in guinea pigs, caused by sensitization to the allergen from the mite's bodies Tyrophagus putrescentiae--species having wide distribution in the country. The results characteristic for T-cell type hypersensitivity have been obtained: delayed positive skin tests after 24 hours, typical histomorphological picture (strong allergic alteration, epidermis desq

Pruritus and behavior of pigs infested by itch mites, Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae).

Effects of infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer) on pruritus and other behaviors of pigs for 9-13 wks after weaning were evaluated. Regardless of the dose of mites inoculated, pigs fed ad lib. spent approximately 60% of their time at rest. Within their average day, pigs spent more time eating in morning and evening, were more active and pruritic at midday, and rested more and spent the least time drinking water at night. Mite infestations increased total activity and time spent scratching and rubbing. Infested pigs sprayed with water rubbed and scratched 4-10 times more frequently than th

The hair follicle mites (Demodex spp.). Could they be vectors of pathogenic microorganisms?

The hair follicle mites Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis are the most common permanent ectoparasites of Man. Ordinarily they are harmless to their human host and appear to be of no medical significance. We present, however, an unusual finding regarding this mite, namely, that in a potassium hydroxide mount of a skin scraping from a mycotic plaque we found numerous Demodex mites containing inside them spores of Microsporum canis. This could mean that the putatively inoffensive Demodex has the potential to ingest various microorganisms that are found in its niche and transport them to other ar

Macronyssid mites in oral mucosa of long-nosed bats: occurrence and associated pathology.

Macronyssid mites (Radfordiella) have been found in the oral mucosa of the long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris nivalis), which occurs from Texas southward throughout much of Mexico. This is the first report of mites of the suborder Mesostigmata attached in the oral cavity of a mammal. Osteolysis of hard palate and odontolysis of teeth result from infestations of mites adjacent to the upper premolars and molars; destruction of bone, teeth, and Connective tissue often leads to exfoliation of teeth in life. Oral mites have not been found in Leptonycteris sanborni, a species in part sympatric with Lepto

First trials exploring the potential of phytoseiid mites in managing lychee erinose mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer) (Acari: Eriophyidae), infestations on lychee plants.

Phytoseiid mites have been frequently found in association with the lychee erinose mite, Aceria litchii, on lychee plants in Brazil, suggesting that they are promising candidates as biological control agents against this pest. Here, we investigated whether phytoseiids would suppress A. litchii infestation, i.e. formation of erinea, on lychee plants under field conditions. Four groups of A. litchii-infested plants were randomly distributed in the field, with each group receiving either Phytoseius intermedius, Amblyseius herbicolus, A. herbicolus supplemented with cattail pollen or no predator.

Morphological, molecular and cross-breeding analysis of geographic populations of coconut-mite associated predatory mites identified as Neoseiulus baraki: evidence for cryptic species?

Surveys were conducted in Brazil, Benin and Tanzania to collect predatory mites as candidates for control of the coconut mite Aceria guerreronis Keifer, a serious pest of coconut fruits. At all locations surveyed, one of the most dominant predators on infested coconut fruits was identified as Neoseiulus baraki Athias-Henriot, based on morphological similarity with regard to taxonomically relevant characters. However, scrutiny of our own and published descriptions suggests that consistent morphological differences may exist between the Benin population and those from the other geographic origin

Results of a field study on the influence of HygienicWood mattress toppers on the number of mites in bed dust and the state of health of people with house dust mite allergies.

OBJECTIVES: So far, there has been no practical or toxicologically non-hazardous way to decimate mites - without interrupting use of beds - in their main reservoir on bed mattresses to such an extent that the allergic condtion of people suffering from house dust mite allergies is reduced or even remedied. As so-called HygienicWood was effective against mites under simulated conditions, the influence of a mattress topper filled with HygienicWood chips on the content of mite antigen Der p1 was to be investigated and the influence on the state of health of the persons concerned analysed at the sa

Molecular profiling of pathogenic Varroa strains and Tropilaelaps mites in Myanmar honey bees.

Honey bee mites are a major threat to the worldwide apiculture, causing substantial losses in honey bee colonies. The present study aimed to detect and characterise mites in honey bee colonies in Myanmar using molecular approaches. We employed PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and DNA sequencing to identify the honey bee mite species present in the region. Our findings indicate the presence of Varroa destructor, Varroa jacobsoni, and Tropilaelaps mercedesae in several honey bee colonies across Myanmar. The phylogenetic analysis revealed close genetic relationships between the V. destructor found

RNAi targeting ABCB1-like efflux transporters improves miticide efficacy in resistant Varroa mites.

BACKGROUND: The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor is the gravest threat to managed honeybees, and its control relies on a limited number of chemical miticides. Among these, amitraz is widely used because of its strong efficacy against mites and relatively low toxicity to bees. However, increasing resistance to amitraz in Varroa populations threatens its long-term effectiveness. While mutations in the mite's β2 octopamine receptor are strongly associated with amitraz resistance, additional mechanisms influencing toxicant uptake and efflux are believed to also contribute. ATP-binding cassette

Efficacy of Trichoderma spp. spore suspensions against cotton-infesting spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae).

Spider mites, particularly Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. turkestani Ugarov and Nikolskii (Acari: Tetranychidae), are major agricultural pests, and their increasing resistance to chemical acaricides underscores the need for alternative control strategies. This study explored the biocontrol potential of Trichoderma spp. against these mites. Specifically, we evaluated (1) the efficacy of spore suspensions from five isolates of four Trichoderma species (Trichoderma afroharzianum, T. guizhouense, T. harzianum and T. virens) and their combinations on different biological stages of T. urticae, (2)

Honey bee hygienic selection impacts virus dynamics of both bees and Varroa mites.

The Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) has reshaped the viral landscape of honey bee colonies, significantly contributing to colony mortality. In response, Varroa-resistant honey bee breeding programs have developed as a promising and sustainable long-term strategy to control Varroa mite infestations in managed colonies. These breeding programs drive the coevolution of hygienic bees and Varroa mites, however the impact of such coevolution on bee and mite viral dynamics remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated how Varroa-resistant traits influence the tripartite interaction
