Food insecurity, comorbidity, and mobility limitations among older U.S. adults: Findings from the Health and Retirement Study and Health Care and Nutrition Study.

Both food insecurity and comorbidity have been identified as precursors to functional limitation in older adults, yet whether food insecurity modifies the progression from chronic disease to disability has not been assessed. We examined 5986 respondents age 50 and older drawn from the 2012-2014 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and 2013 Health Care and Nutrition Study (HCNS). Mobility limitations reported in 2014 and change in mobility limitations from 2012 to 2014 were regressed on measures of food insecurity, number of chronic conditions, and their interaction terms using Poisson regression.…

How does playing adapted sports affect quality of life of people with mobility limitations? Results from a mixed-method sequential explanatory study.

BACKGROUND: Occupations, including physical activity, are a strong determinant of health. However, mobility limitations can restrict opportunities to perform these occupations, which may affect quality of life. Some people will turn to adapted sports to meet their need to be involved in occupations. Little is known, however, about how participation in adapted sports affects the quality of life of people with mobility limitations. This study thus aimed to explore the influence of adapted sports on quality of life in adult wheelchair users. METHODS: A mixed-method sequential explanatory design …

Impact of musculoskeletal pain on balance and concerns of falling in mobility-limited, community-dwelling Danes over 75 years of age: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In older adults, musculoskeletal pain is associated with increased concerns of falling, reduced balance and increased occurrence of falls. In younger adults, the intensity of neck pain and low back pain is associated with increased postural sway. It is not known if pain further impairs balance and concerns of falling in mobility-limited older adults, and if so, whether this is associated with different intensities of pain. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether mobility-limited older adults with mild or intense neck pain and/or low back pain have significantly increased postural s

Evaluating the physical demands when using sled-type stair descent devices to evacuate mobility-limited occupants from high-rise buildings.

The physical demands on evacuators were investigated when using different types of sled-type stair descent devices designed for the emergency evacuation of high rise buildings. Twelve firefighters used six sled-type stair descent devices during simulated evacuations. The devices were evaluated under two staircase width conditions (1.12, and 1.32 m). Dependent measures included electromyographic (EMG) data, heart rates, Borg Scale ratings, and descent velocities. All stair descent speeds were below those reported during pedestrian egress trials. With the exception of the inflatable device, the

Evaluating the physical demands on firefighters using hand-carried stair descent devices to evacuate mobility-limited occupants from high-rise buildings.

The physical demands on firefighting personnel were investigated when using different types of hand-carried stair descent devices designed for the emergency evacuation of high rise buildings as a function of staircase width and evacuation urgency. Twelve firefighters used three hand-carried stair descent devices during simulated urgent and non-urgent evacuations. The devices were evaluated under three staircase width conditions (0.91, 1.12, and 1.32 m). For comparison, an urgent manual carry was also performed on the 1.12 m wide stairs. Dependent measures included electromyographic (EMG) data,

Surface electromyography evaluation of selected manual and physical therapy interventions in women with temporomandibular joint pain and limited mobility. Randomized controlled trial (RCT).

UNLABELLED: Non-invasive approach is gaining an increasing recognition in the TMD patients management. It is therefore reasonable to conduct RCTs evaluating the effectiveness of both physical and manual physiotherapy interventions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term efficacy of selected physiotherapeutic interventions and their effect on the bioelectrical function of the masseter muscle in patients with pain and limited TMJ mobility. The study was conducted on a group of 186 women (T) with the Ib disorder diagnosed in DC/TMD. The control group consisted of 104 women without d

Single Dose Preemptive Plerixafor for Stem Cell Mobilization for ASCT After Lenalidomide Based Therapy in Multiple Myeloma: Impact in Resource Limited Setting.

Peripheral blood stem cell mobilization with cytokines for autologous stem cell transplant in multiple myeloma is adversely affected by initial induction therapy consisting of either Lenalidomide or cytotoxic drugs, with failure rates of up to 45%. The use of Plerixafor with G-CSF for PBSC mobilisation significantly improves the chances of a successful mobilization. Plerixafor is a costly therapy and increases the overall costs of ASCT which can affect the number of patients being taken up for ASCT in resource limited settings. We prospectively studied the impact of single dose preemptive Pler

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) serum basal levels is not affected by power training in mobility-limited older adults - A randomized controlled trial.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a potential important factor involved in neuroplasticity, and may be a mediator for eliciting adaptations in neuromuscular function and physical function in older individuals following physical training. As power training taxes the neural system to a very high extent, it may be particularly effective in terms of eliciting increases in systemic BDNF levels. We examined the effects of 12weeks of power training on mature BDNF (mBDNF) and total BDNF (tBDNF) in mobility-limited older adults from the Healthy Ageing Network of Competence (HANC) study. We in

Personalised, GIS-based counselling to promote habitual walking in mobility-limited and chronically ill older adults: protocol of the MOBITEC-Routes randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is a cornerstone of health for older adults. Recent evidence underscores that even regular light activity, such as routine walking, offers substantial health benefits. Traditional approaches to promoting walking often overlook the importance of the local neighbourhood environment and the wide range of abilities and preferences of older adults. A personalised walking intervention - emphasizing personal preferences and local facilitators by employing Geographic information System (GIS)-based methods for communication and goal setting - might help to overcome problem

Strong Relation Between Muscle Mass Determined by D3-creatine Dilution, Physical Performance, and Incidence of Falls and Mobility Limitations in a Prospective Cohort of Older Men.

BACKGROUND: Direct assessment of skeletal muscle mass in older adults is clinically challenging. Relationships between lean mass and late-life outcomes have been inconsistent. The D3-creatine dilution method provides a direct assessment of muscle mass. METHODS: Muscle mass was assessed by D3-creatine (D3Cr) dilution in 1,382 men (mean age, 84.2 years). Participants completed the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB); usual walking speed (6 m); and dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) lean mass. Men self-reported mobility limitations (difficulty walking 2-3 blocks or climbing 10 steps); recurre…

A Danish version of the life-space assessment (LSA-DK) - translation, content validity and cultural adaptation using cognitive interviewing in older mobility limited adults.

BACKGROUND: Identification and prevention of mobility limitations in older adults is important to reduce adverse health outcomes. The Life-Space Assessment (LSA) provides a single measure of mobility including environmental and social resources of the older adult. Availability of the LSA for non-English speaking countries is still sparse. Therefore, we translated the LSA into Danish and performed a content validity analysis of the translation in older adults with mobility limitations. METHODS: After translation into Danish, the Danish version (LSA-DK) was content validated using cognitive int…

Recruiting hard-to-reach subjects for exercise interventions: a multi-centre and multi-stage approach targeting general practitioners and their community-dwelling and mobility-limited patients.

The general practitioner (GP)'s practice appears to be an ideal venue for recruiting community-dwelling older adults with limited mobility. This study (Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN17727272) aimed at evaluating the recruiting process used for a multi-centre exercise intervention (HOMEfit). Each of six steps resulted in an absolute number of patients (N1-N6). Sex and age (for N4-N6) and reasons for dropping out were assessed. Patient database screening (N1-N3) at 15 GP practices yielded N1 = 5,990 patients aged 70 and above who had visited their GP within the past 6 months, N2 = 5,467 after

Cross-Host Adaptation of Campylobacter jejuni Is Shaped by Chromosomal Backgrounds and Mobile Gene Acquisition, with Human-Associated Traits Emerging Under Limited Mutational Diversification.

Campylobacter jejuni is a major zoonotic pathogen that circulates among birds, livestock, humans, and environmental reservoirs, yet the genomic mechanisms that enable persistence and transmission across divergent hosts remain incompletely understood. Here, we sequenced 61 C. jejuni isolates recovered from multiple host-associated sources in Shenzhen, China, from 2016 to 2023, and analyzed them together with 312 dereplicated publicly available high-quality reference genomes. Phylogenomic analyses resolved three major clades, including one avian-restricted clade and two clades showing frequent c
