Biologically, MoS2-based nanostructures have been intensely applied for the photothermal therapy of cancer, but rarely for antibacterial uses. BACKGROUND: The occurrence of Tribulus terrestris motor neurone disease (MND) in sheep is linked with grazing Tribulus growing on cultivation paddocks. A previous survey found that the molybdenum (Mo) content of Tribulus growing on uncultivated soils in the Coonabarabran district of New South Wales was 3.03 ppm, but on cultivated soils it was <0.04 ppm. A case of copper deficiency or molybdenum toxicosis in cattle, sheep and horses after heavy pollution of a pasture with fly ash is described. If the pastures had not been grazed by cattle and sheep as well as the horses, it would have been difficult to identify the reason for the intoxication in the horses. It is argued that molybdenum intoxication, although seldom seen in non-ruminants, was the cause of the deaths of the horses. It is suggested that the bioavailability of molybdenum in fly ash is high and therefore can cause equine intoxication.

We report X-ray crystallographic structures of the Azotobacter vinelandii nitrogenase MoFe protein showing the 8Fe-7S electron-transfer P-cluster in four redox states. Using electrochemical poising of protein crystals, together with in crystallo EPR spectroscopic verification of the redox state, we obtain structures showing the P-cluster at PN, P1+, P2+, and P3+ levels. The administration of tungsten to rats maintained on a low molybdenum diet resulted in a dose- and time-dependent loss of sulfite oxidase (EC 1.8.3.1) and xanthine oxidase (EC 1.2.3.2) activities and hepatic molybdenum. These tungsten-treated animals appeared healthy, but were more susceptible to bisulfite toxicity. Nitrate pollution in water necessitates efficient catalytic solutions for its conversion into harmless or valuable products. In this work, a molybdenum-promoted nickel-aluminum alloy (NAMCat) catalyst via alkaline leaching for the hydrogenation reduction of nitrate to N2 and NH3 was developed.
