C3b receptor mediated clearance by the reticuloendothelial system (RES) was tested in vivo using autologous C3b coated, technetium labelled erythrocytes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and rheumatoid vasculitis. The intravascular survival of human erythrocytes transfused to primate animals was prolonged by infusing the recipients with a perfluorocarbon red cell substitute (Fluosol DA). This effect is probably due to transient block of the animals' reticuloendothelial system by the perfluorocarbon emulsion. Perfluorocarbon compounds could be used to study the role of reticuloendothelial function in the immune destruction of red cells.

The pathologic response of New Zealand White rabbits to experimental infection with Trypanosoma rhodesiense is described. Autopsies of 18 rabbits killed from 30-44 days after infection revealed focal perivascular inflammation of the ears, eyes and testes. The reticuloendothelial system (RES) is part of the host defence and consequently plays an important role in shock and trauma, conditions often requiring volume replacement. Serious life-threatening neonatal infections with microbial species that are infrequently associated with infections in adults are related to the immature immune system of human newborn infants. The usually sterile intrauterine environment of the fetus is associated with a primed but inactive immune system at the time of birth. Sudden introduction into a complex microbial world stimulates the inflammatory system and an effective host defense rapidly develops. Defense mechanisms include innate phagocytic and complement systems, and specific adaptive immunity including antimicrobial antibodies.

Investigation of the capacity of the mononuclear phagocyte system to remove immune complexes from the circulation was performed by the administration of 125I-labelled aggregates of human immunoglobulin G (AIgG) to patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and healthy volunteers.
