Fortification of highly-consumed foods such as bread is an easy and cheap strategy to combat the iron deficiency anemia. However, there have sometimes been some side effects such as iron overload and digestive problems. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the amount of iron as well as its non-carcinogenic risks in commonly-used types of Iranian flour and breads (Barbary, Lavash, and Tafton) in Isfahan, Iran. Iron concentration of 100 samples of flour and breads were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer. Moreover, the non-carcinogenic health risk of iron in

BACKGROUND: Alpha-emitter radiopharmaceutical therapy (αRPT) has shown promising outcomes in metastatic disease. However, the short range of the alpha particles necessitates dosimetry on a near-cellular spatial scale. Current knowledge on cellular dosimetry is primarily based on in vitro experiments using cell monolayers. The goal of such experiments is to establish cell sensitivity to absorbed dose (AD). However, AD cannot be measured directly and needs to be modeled. Current models, often idealize cells as spheroids in a regular grid (geometric model), simplify binding kinetics and ignore th

PURPOSE: We aim to verify predictions showing T2 relaxation rate of nanoparticle clusters and its dependence on spacing, size, geometry, and pulse sequence.
METHODS: We performed a laboratory validation study using nanopatterned arrays of iron oxide nanoparticles to precisely control cluster geometry and image diverse samples using a 4.7T MRI scanner with a T2 -weighted fast spin-echo multislice sequence. We applied denoising and normalization to regions of interest and estimated relative R2 for each relevant nanoparticle array or nanocluster array. We determined significance using an unpaire

BACKGROUND: Quality assurance (QA) is a prerequisite for safe and accurate pencil-beam proton therapy. Conventional measurement-based patient-specific QA (pQA) can only verify limited aspects of patient treatment and is labor-intensive. Thus, a better method is needed to ensure the integrity of the treatment plan.
PURPOSE: Line scanning, which involves continuous and rapid delivery of pencil beams, is a state-of-the-art proton therapy technique. Machine performance in delivering scanning protons is dependent on the complexity of the beam modulations. Moreover, it contributes to patient treatm

BACKGROUND: Dynamic positron emission tomography (dPET) is a nuclear medicine imaging technique providing functional images for organs of interest with applications in oncology, cardiology, and drug discovery. This technique requires the acquisition of the time-course arterial plasma activity concentration, called the arterial input function (AIF), which is conventionally acquired via arterial blood sampling.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to (A) optimize the geometry for a novel and cost efficient non-invasive detector called NID designed to measure the AIF for dPET scans through Monte C

Numerous diseases such as hemorrhage, sepsis or cardiogenic shock induce a heterogeneous perfusion of the capillaries. To detect such alterations in the human blood flow pattern, diagnostic devices must provide an appropriately high spatial resolution. Shifted position-diffuse reflectance imaging (SP-DRI) has the potential to do so; it is an all-optical diagnostic technique. So far, SP-DRI has mainly been developed using Monte Carlo simulations. The present study is therefore validating this algorithm experimentally on realistic optical phantoms with thread structures down to 10 μm in diameter

The goal of the present study was to estimate the radiation dose for a group of 45 Kawasaki disease (KD) patients undergoing fluoroscopically guided cardiac catheterization. The sample of procedures corresponds to a single hospital and was collected in 10 years. Anthropometric characteristics and the quantities of air kerma-area product (PKA) among others were recorded for each procedure. Monte Carlo PCXMC 2.0 software was used to estimate organ and effective doses. The PKA value of 7.2 Gy cm2 was proposed as the local Diagnostic Reference Level for KD. For organ absorbed doses, median values

Using the 50 kV INTRABEAM®IORT system after breast-conserving surgery: tumor recurrence and organs at risk (OARs), such as the lung and heart, long-term complications remain the challenging problems for breast cancer patients. So, the objective of this study was to address these two problems with the help of high atomic number nanoparticles (NPs). A Monte Carlo (MC) Simulation type EGSnrc C++ class library (egspp) with its Easy particle propagation (Epp) user code was used. The simulation was validated against the measured depth dose data found in our previous study (Tegaw,et al2020 Dosimetric

In this study, we investigated an experimental and Monte-Carlo computational characterization of self-assembled antennae built using CdTe colloidal quantum dots (QDs). These clusters provide efficient excitation of phycocyanine (PC) or phycobilisomes (PBSs). PBSs are light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) of cyanobacteria, made of several PC units, organized in disks and rods. Each PC contains three separate cofactors. Therefore, we analyzed variations in multi-donor and multi-acceptor systems. The self-assembled QD clusters were formed mostly by electrostatic interactions, possibly due to the intr

To evaluate and compare the risk of emerging vector-borne diseases (VBDs), a Model for INTegrated RISK assessment, MINTRISK, was developed to assess the introduction risk of VBDs for new regions in an objective, transparent and repeatable manner. MINTRISK is a web-based calculation tool, that provides semi-quantitative risk scores that can be used for prioritization purposes. Input into MINTRISK is entered by answering questions regarding entry, transmission, establishment, spread, persistence and impact of a selected VBD. Answers can be chosen from qualitative answer categories with accompany

In this work we study fundus reflection in the case of retinal detachment. Vitreous humor builds up beneath the retina through a break in the retina or when there is traction on the retina. Further, we assume that this detachment is associated with hemorrhage in regions both above and below the retina. To investigate hemorrhage, we assume erythrocytes to be spheres of different radii. Then we apply Mie scattering theory to these spheres and calculate the scattering coefficient, the absorption coefficient, and the anisotropy factor. Using these parameters, we apply Monte Carlo simulation to cal

We describe three lessons learned about how tissue optics affect the dosimetry of red to near-infrared treatment light during PDT, based on working with Dr. Tayyaba Hasan. Lesson 1-The optical fluence rate φ near the tissue surface exceeds the delivered irradiance (E). A broad beam penetrates into tissue to a depth (z) as φ=Eke(-μz), with an attenuation constant μ and a backscatter term k. In tissues, k is typically in the range 3-5, and 1∕μ equals δ, the 1∕e optical penetration depth. Lesson 2-Edge losses at the periphery of a uniform treatment beam extend about 3δ from the beam edge. If the

Traditional vehicle accident reconstructions do not take into account all existing uncertainties and may over- or under-estimate the injury risk. The objective of this study was to introduce a new uncertainty analysis method by applying Response Surface-Monte Carlo Methods (RS-MCM) to predict head injury risk in real electric two wheelers (ETW) to vehicle accidents. Vehicle impact velocity ranges in three detailed ETWs accidents (including video records and injury reports) were estimated using direct linear transformation (DLT) or video frame (VF) methods. A response surface methodology (RSM) …

BACKGROUND: MR-US guided biopsies support biologic correlation in HDR prostate brachytherapy, but steep dose gradients and millimeter-scale localization uncertainty limit the validity of nominal biopsy doses.
PURPOSE: To assess how localization uncertainty affects the robustness of biopsy DVH dose thresholds in HDR prostate brachytherapy and to quantify the nominal dose margins corresponding to 95% pass probabilities.
METHODS: Twenty-seven biopsies from 15 HDR monotherapy patients were reconstructed as sets of 1 m m voxels and sampled on the clinical HDR dose lattice. Localization uncertai

One of the main concerns of radiography procedures is to produce diagnostic image quality with dose reduction, specifically for pediatric patients. In the present study, Monte Carlo simulations using GATE (Geant Application for Tomography Emission) code, coupled with a 7-wk-old voxel female baby model from the GSF (German Research Center for Environment Health) were performed to investigate how dose in digital chest, abdomen, and both chest and abdomen (babygram) x-ray examinations vary with tube voltage (40-60 keV) at a fixed value of current-time product (4 mAs) using different collimation a

Amyloid deposits of amylin in the pancreas are an important characteristic feature found in patients with Type-2 diabetes. The aggregate has been considered important in the disease pathology and has been studied extensively. However, the secondary structures of the individual peptide have not been clearly identified. In this work, we present detailed solution structures of rat amylin using a combination of Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. A new Monte Carlo method is presented to determine the free energy of distinct biomolecular conformations. Both folded and random-coil confor…

Comprehensive uncertainty analyses of complex models of environmental and biological systems are essential but often not feasible due to the computational resources they require. "Traditional" methods, such as standard Monte Carlo and Latin Hypercube Sampling, for propagating uncertainty and developing probability densities of model outputs, may in fact require performing a prohibitive number of model simulations. An alternative is offered, for a wide range of problems, by the computationally efficient "Stochastic Response Surface Methods (SRSMs)" for uncertainty propagation. These methods ext

Selective publication of favorable results can bias meta-analytic estimates and threaten the validity of meta-analyses. Many methods that detect and adjust for publication bias perform poorly under substantial between-study heterogeneity. Heterogeneity complicates publication bias assessment because study characteristics may be associated with both effect size estimates and standard errors. These characteristics can induce an effect-precision association that regression-based diagnostics may misattribute to selective publication when such characteristics are omitted. However, it remains unclea
