Amidst growing global endorsements of new biomedical HIV prevention strategies, ARV-based pre-exposure prophylaxis (ARV PrEP) has garnered considerable attention as a potentially promising prevention strategy. Though it may offer more effective protection for certain at-risk groups than conventional prevention strategies (such as sexual partner reduction, condom use, and prevention of mother-to-child transmission), PrEP is more costly. PrEP requires more ongoing contact between individuals and providers, and a level of surveillance from the health system that is not necessary with other preven

A preimplantation genetic test to discriminate between severe and mild autism spectrum disorder might be developed in the foreseeable future. Recently, the philosophers Julian Savulescu and Guy Kahane claimed that there are strong reasons for prospective parents to make use of such a test to prevent the birth of children who are disposed to autism or Asperger's disorder. In this paper we will criticize this claim. We will discuss the morality of selection for mild autism in embryo selection in a hypothetical in vitro fertilization (IVF) situation where preimplantation genetic diagnosis is perf

OBJECTIVE: To know the strategies of resistance adopted by nursing staff, facing situations of moral distress, from an ethical perspective.
METHOD: The authors conducted qualitative research through semi-structured interviews, with fifteen nursing staff members of a university hospital in the extreme south of Brazil, using textual discourse analysis and the theoretical reference of Foucault.
RESULTS: Two categories were constructed: denial of oneself and the other - in which one perceives that the nursing staff can perform actions that are governed predominantly by immobility and conformism,

Results from functional magnetic resonance imaging and lesion studies indicate that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is essential for successful navigation through a complex social world inundated with intricate norms and moral values. This review examines regions of the PFC that are critical for implicit and explicit social cognitive and moral judgment processing. Considerable overlap between regions active when individuals engage in social cognition or assess moral appropriateness of behaviors is evident, underscoring the similarity between social cognitive and moral judgment processes in general

This study examined the coverage of methamphetamine from 1997 to 2005 by three newspapers serving small Midwestern cities and contrasted their portrayals of methamphetamine problems with available data on the severity of the meth problem in each locality. Results of quantitative and qualitative content analyses show that--to varying degrees, across sites and over time--newspaper coverage of meth was disproportionate to the scale of the meth problem as indicated by site-specific treatment admissions data. To some extent, each of the three newspapers used drug-scare rhetoric (e.g., medical metap

BACKGROUND: The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be ethically charged, which can create challenges for health-care workers.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency with which nurses and residents have experienced ethical confrontations and what factors are associated with increased frequency.
DESIGN/METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to nurses in a university center, a high-risk obstetric service, a maternity hospital NICU with 85% in-born patients and an outborn NICU, most of whose preterm admissions are those with surgical complications. Obstetric and pediatric reside

In 1997, a court in Cyprus jailed Pavlos Georgiou for fifteen months for knowingly infecting a British woman, Janet Pink, with HIV-1 through unprotected sexual intercourse. Pink met Georgiou in January 1994 whilst on holiday. She discovered that she had contracted the virus from him in October 1994 but continued the relationship until July 1996 when she developed AIDS. She returned to the UK for treatment and reported Georgiou to the Cypriot authorities. There have been a number of legal cases involving deliberate transmission of HIV, but most have involved forced exposure to infected bodily f

Assessing the normative status of concepts of health and disease involves one in questions regarding the relationship between fact and value. Some have argued that Christopher Boorse's conception of health and disease lacks such a valuational element because it cannot account for types of harms which, while disvalued, do not have evolutionarily dysfunctional consequences. I take Boorse's account and incorporate some Humean-like sociobiological assumptions in order to respond to this challenge. The possession of moral sentiments, I argue, offers an evolutionary advantage (thus falling within Bo

In the spring of 1866, the Canadian government feared that a cholera epidemic was imminent. A conference of medical experts was held at Ottawa to determine the nature of the disease on the basis of "authentic facts" but the participants were unable to agree among themselves. Faced with the necessity of advising Canadians on how to live in time of plague, and yet unable to define clearly the nature of cholera, in his Memorandum on Cholera the deputy-minister of Agriculture, J.-C. Taché, translated medical preoccupations into matters of the government of oneself and others, in terms heavily acce

Ethical controversy over transplantation of human fetal tissue has arisen because the source of tissue is induced abortions. Opposition to such transplants has been based on various arguments, including the following: rightful informed consent cannot be obtained for use of fetal tissue from induced abortions, and fetal tissue transplantation might result in an increase in the number of abortions. These arguments were not accepted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Human Fetal Tissue Transplantation Research Panel. The majority opinion of the panel stated that abortion and fetal tissue

OBJECTIVE: Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or moral injury are at risk of maladaptive response styles to positive emotions, such as emotional numbing. A potential pathway to target problematic responses to positive affect is a positive psychology intervention that elicits moral elevation-feeling inspired after witnessing someone perform a virtuous act. This study aims to examine responses to positive affect in a pilot trial of a web-based moral elevation intervention titled, MOVED: Moral Elevation Online Intervention for Veterans Experiencing Distress Related to PTSD and Mor

Healthcare providers (HCPs) have described the onset of shame- and trust-violation-related moral injuries (MI) throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous research suggests that HCPs may turn to various coping methods and supports, such as spirituality/religiosity, substance use, friends/family or organizational support, to manage workplace stress. It remains unknown, however, if similar coping methods and supports are associated with MI among this population. We explored associations between MI (including the shame and trust-violation presentations individually) and coping methods and supports

Moral choice systems are widely implemented in role-playing games (RPGs) to enhance players' narrative immersion. However, existing research has yielded inconsistent findings regarding whether different types of moral choices (i.e., high-morality vs. low-morality choices) produce different levels of immersion. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the present study incorporates autonomy and moral emotions into a model of narrative immersion and proposes an integrated model that includes both moderation and parallel mediation, examining whether moral choice influences narrative immersion

BACKGROUND: As direct and continuous providers of patient care, nurses are more susceptible to various forms of psychological stress within the healthcare environment compared to other healthcare professionals. Nurses in paediatric wards, who maintain constant contact with children and their families, are particularly vulnerable to moral distress. This study aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of Iranian nurses regarding moral distress in paediatric settings.
METHODS: This qualitative study employed inductive content analysis, conducted between 2023 and 2024. Data were collected

Moral injury has emerged as a significant dimension of psychological suffering among individuals exposed to ethically compromising situations in war. Unlike post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is primarily organized around fear-based responses to threat, moral injury centers on violations of deeply held moral expectations involving responsibility, agency, and trust. In this clinical reflection, moral injury is approached not as a psychiatric diagnosis, but as a clinical-moral condition arising from difficulty reconciling actions or survival with an internalized moral framework.
