BACKGROUND: Insecticides are currently the main tools used to reduce the transmission of malaria; therefore, the development of resistance to insecticides in malaria vectors is of major concern for malaria control. The resistance level to pyrethroids is particularly high in the Western region of Burkina Faso and may affect the efficacy of insecticidal bed nets and indoor residual spraying. Adult mosquito swarming and other nocturnal behaviours exhibit spatial and temporal patterns that suggest potential vulnerability to targeted space spraying with effective insecticides. Indeed, targeted spac

Malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and the Zika and West Nile Viruses are major vector-borne diseases of humans transmitted by mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organization, over 80% of the world's population is at risk of contacting these diseases. Insecticides are critical for mosquito control and disease prevention, and insect insecticide resistance is on the increase; new alternatives with potentially different modes of action from current chemistry are needed. During laboratory screening of industrial minerals for insecticide activity against Anopheles gambiae (Giles) (Diptera: Culic…

Aedes albopictus, also known as the "Asian Tiger Mosquito", is an invasive mosquito species to Europe causing high concern in public health due to its severe nuisance and its vectorial capacity for pathogens such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika. Consequently, the responsible authorities implement management activities to reduce its population density, possibly to below noxious and epidemiological thresholds. In urban areas, these aims are difficult to achieve because of the species' ability to develop in a wide range of artificial breeding sites, mainly private properties. This d

AIMS: To survey and to characterize entomopathogenic fungi as natural enemies of mosquitoes in Central Brazil.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Tolypocladium cylindrosporum (Hypocreales, Ophiocordycipitaceae) was isolated for the first time in South America by using Aedes aegypti (Diptera, Culicidae) as sentinel larvae in a stagnant mosquito breeding site in a secondary tropical forest. Two isolates were morphologically and molecularly identified, and their activity tested against A. aegypti eggs, larvae and adults.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings emphasize the importance of T. cylindrosporum as a natural fungal

Due to the limitations of the human therapeutics and vaccines available to treat and prevent mosquito-borne diseases, the primary strategy for disease mitigation is through vector control. However, the current tools and approaches used for mosquito control have proven insufficient to prevent malaria and arboviral infections, such as dengue, Zika, and lymphatic filariasis, and hence, these diseases remain a global public health threat. The proven ability of mosquito vectors to adapt to various control strategies through insecticide resistance, invasive potential, and behavioral changes from ind…

BACKGROUND: Despite global malaria control efforts, malaria continues to cause approximately 241-249 million cases and over 600,000 deaths annually. Ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug with endectocidal activity against mosquitoes feeding on treated hosts, has been proposed as a potential malaria vector-control intervention.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effectiveness of ivermectin in reducing malaria transmission outcomes in adult populations, including malaria incidence, prevalence, mosquito mortality, and safety outcomes.
METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines,

Reliance on traditional vector control methods, such as insecticides and "clean up" source reduction efforts for reducing mosquito breeding sites, has proven increasingly ineffective and costly in the battle against dengue. The Wolbachia-based mosquito replacement strategy, which replaces wild mosquitoes with mosquitoes trans-infected with Wolbachia bacteria, preventing up to 77% dengue transmission, represents an advancement in prevention. Integrating this approach into current routine dengue control efforts could reduce dengue incidence. However, challenges such as implementation costs, the

The release of Wolbachia pipientis-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes has emerged as a novel strategy to reduce the transmission of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Wolbachia-based approaches to dengue control include population replacement, which reduces vector competence by establishing Wolbachia in wild populations of Aedes aegypti, and population suppression, which lowers mosquito densities through cytoplasmic incompatibility. Field trials of the population replacement strategy, based on wMel Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, have shown variable success and concerns persist a

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue remain major global public health challenges, especially in areas facing rapid climate change. Conventional mosquito control often proves ineffective or unsustainable, highlighting the need for innovative approaches. One promising strategy is releasing Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia, a bacterium that reduces mosquito-borne virus transmission. However, spatial heterogeneity across release areas complicates large-scale Wolbachia deployment, particularly in complex urban landscapes. High spatial variation and limited access to certain regio…

BACKGROUND: The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is an invasive species and a competent vector of numerous pathogens. Its establishment in Austria represents a growing public health concern, underscoring the need for effective surveillance strategies. In Austria, two complementary monitoring systems are implemented, an expert-based ovitrap monitoring programme and a citizen science-based monitoring approach. This study investigates whether combining structured expert monitoring with citizen science reporting provides measurable benefits and identifies which advantages are most relevant.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) is an environmentally friendly tool for suppressing Aedes aegypti populations. While promising in controlled settings, its application in large urban environments presents logistical and biological challenges. This trial focused on releasing sterile males, sent from a long-distance production facility to suppress the local mosquito population.
METHODS: Sterile males of Ae. aegypti were mass-reared, irradiated, and transported 712.2 km from a central facility to Recife, Brazil. Releases were performed once (SIT 1 ×) or twice per week (SIT 2 ×). En

Mosquito-transmitted viruses such as dengue are a global and growing public health challenge. Without widely available vaccines, mosquito control is the primary tool for fighting the spread of these viruses. New mosquito control technologies are needed to complement existing methods, given current challenges with scalability, acceptability, and effectiveness. A field trial was conducted in collaboration with the Communities Organized to Prevent Arboviruses project in Ponce, Puerto Rico, to measure entomological and epidemiological effects of reducing Aedes aegypti populations using Wolbachia i…

Entomopathogenic fungi engineered to express insect-specific neurotoxins have demonstrated potential as microbial control agents against malaria mosquitoes. Currently, the primary application method is via direct contact of spores with indoor resting mosquitoes. However, many malaria-transmitting mosquitoes feed and rest outdoors. To target these, we have developed an alternative application method that exploits the lethality of transgenic fungi as a sexually transmitted mosquito disease. This approach has both a wider interdisciplinary significance and important implications for preventing mo

BACKGROUND: The invasive Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) poses growing health risks across Europe. In Switzerland, a preliminary field trial was conducted to assess the feasibility of integrating the sterile insect technique (SIT) into existing integrated vector management (IVM), which includes breeding site removal and application of biological larvicides. SIT involves repeated releases of irradiated sterile males, which mate with wild females, producing non-viable eggs and leading to population decline.
METHODS: Following a preliminary release test in 2022, a small-scale SIT trial t
