Global motion mechanisms compensate local motion deficits in a patient with a bilateral occipital lobe lesion.

Successive stages of cortical processing encode increasingly more complex types of information. In the visual motion system this increasing complexity, complemented by an increase in spatial summation, has proven effective in characterizing the mechanisms mediating visual perception. Here we report psychophysical results from a motion-impaired stroke patient, WB, whose pattern of deficits over time reveals a systematic shift in spatial scale for processing speed. We show that following loss in sensitivity to low-level motion direction WB's representation of speed shifts to larger spatial scale…

Assessing the Validity and Reliability of a Markerless Motion Capture System for Sagittal-Plane Gait Range of Motion.

INTRODUCTION: Optical three-dimensional (3D) motion capture systems and inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based systems provide accurate kinematic measurements, yet both remain costly and require complex setups. Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven markerless systems that operate with a single smartphone offer a practical alternative. In this study, we evaluated the validity and reliability of a markerless motion capture system (SPLYZA Motion; SPLYZA Inc., Shizuoka, Japan) for sagittal-plane gait analysis relative to an IMU-based 3D system (Ultium Motion; Noraxon Inc., Scottsdale, AZ, USA). METH…

Theoretical considerations on models of vestibular self-motion perception as inherent in computational frameworks of motion sickness.

This study examines self-motion perception incorporated into motion sickness models. Research on modeling self-motion perception and motion sickness has advanced independently, though both are thought to share neural mechanisms, making the construction of a unified model opportune. Models based on the Subjective Vertical Conflict (SVC) theory, a refinement of the neural mismatch theory, have primarily focused on motion sickness, with limited validation for self-motion perception. Emerging studies have begun evaluating the perceptual validity of these models, suggesting that some models can rep…

Stimulation of PPC Affects the Mapping between Motion and Force Signals for Stiffness Perception But Not Motion Control.

UNLABELLED: How motion and sensory inputs are combined to assess an object's stiffness is still unknown. Here, we provide evidence for the existence of a stiffness estimator in the human posterior parietal cortex (PPC). We showed previously that delaying force feedback with respect to motion when interacting with an object caused participants to underestimate its stiffness. We found that applying theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the PPC, but not the dorsal premotor cortex, enhances this effect without affecting movement control. We explain this enhancement as an additio…

The effect of dynamic, semi-rigid implants on the range of motion of lumbar motion segments after decompression.

Undercutting decompression is a common surgical procedure for the therapy of lumbar spinal canal stenosis. Segmental instability, due to segmental degeneration or iatrogenic decompression is a typical problem that is clinically addressed by fusion, or more recently by semi-rigid stabilization devices. The objective of this experimental biomechanical study was to investigate the influence of spinal decompression alone, as well as in conjunction with two semi-rigid stabilizing implants (Wallis, Dynesys) on the range of motion (ROM) of lumbar spine segments. A total of 21 fresh-frozen human lumba…

The Reliability and Validity of Active Range of Motion Measurement for Fingers Using Three-Dimensional Motion Analysis.

The Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Range of Motion (ROM) are well-known measures for evaluating finger motor function. However, the finger FMA has a narrow scoring range, and goniometer ROM measurements lack reliability. Therefore, we investigated ROM measurement using a 3D motion capture system (Ultraleap Stereo IR 170, Ultraleap Ltd., Bristol, UK, hereinafter referred to as Ultraleap). This study aimed to evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability of finger Active ROM (A-ROM) using Ultraleap, and its criterion-related validity compared to a goniometer, in stroke patients with upper lim…

Bodies in motion: Unraveling the distinct roles of motion and shape in dynamic body responses in the temporal cortex.

The temporal cortex represents social stimuli, including bodies. We examine and compare the contributions of dynamic and static features to the single-unit responses to moving monkey bodies in and between a patch in the anterior dorsal bank of the superior temporal sulcus (dorsal patch [DP]) and patches in the anterior inferotemporal cortex (ventral patch [VP]), using fMRI guidance in macaques. The response to dynamics varies within both regions, being higher in DP. The dynamic body selectivity of VP neurons correlates with static features derived from convolutional neural networks and motion.…

Piecewise-Stationary Motion Modeling and Iterative Smoothing to Track Heterogeneous Particle Motions in Dense Environments.

One of the major challenges in multiple particle tracking is the capture of extremely heterogeneous movements of objects in crowded scenes. The presence of numerous assignment candidates in the expected range of particle motion makes the tracking ambiguous and induces false positives. Lowering the ambiguity by reducing the search range, on the other hand, is not an option, as this would increase the rate of false negatives. We propose here a piecewise-stationary motion model (PMM) for the particle transport along an iterative smoother that exploits recursive tracking in multiple rounds in forw…

Natural motion statistics unify direction computations.

Visual direction selectivity is typically studied using coherent, unidirectional stimuli. However, natural vision involves more complex, heterogeneous motion fields generated by self-motion and moving objects. How visual circuits extract direction information from these motion fields is not fully understood. Here, we show that On-Off direction-selective ganglion cells (DSGCs) in the mouse retina encode an integrated motion direction from component motion vectors within their receptive fields. Using plaid stimuli with distinct velocity components, we demonstrate that DSGCs maintain unidirection…

Human-Centered Geodesics for Motion Planning.

This paper addresses the challenge of designing human-like reference trajectories for exoskeleton-aided rehabilitation, with a focus on mimicking human joint coordination while addressing clinical requirements. Redundant kinematic chains in human biomechanics pose challenges to trajectory planning: state-of-the-art algorithms often do not explicitly address the problem of replicating natural movements nor do they provide a suitable performance over a wide range of human motions. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a geodesics-based computational method that incorporates joint-level …

Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Since motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame, which reference frame guides perception? A century of psychophysical studies has produced conflicting evidence: retinotopic, egocentric, world-centric, or even object-centric. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian model mapping retinal velocities to perceived velocities. Our model mirrors the structure in the world, in which visual elements move within causally connected reference frames. Friction renders velocities in these reference frames mostly stationary, formalized by an additional delta component (at zero) in the prior. Inve…

Shoulder Motion Overestimated by Mallet Scores.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI) occur in up 0.4 to 4.6 per 1000 live births. Weakness about the shoulder and development of glenohumeral joint contractures are common sequalae of BPBI. Shoulder function in children with BPBI is frequently assessed using the modified Mallet classification to evaluate upper extremity motion deficits. The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of the abduction, external rotation, and hand-to-mouth Mallet classification scores in children with BPBI using motion capture. METHODS: A retrospective study of 107 children with BPBI who under…
