Characterisation of pregnancy-induced alterations in apolipoproteins and their associations with maternal metabolic risk factors and offspring birth outcomes: a preconception and longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoproteins as an integral part of lipoproteins are crucial for the transport and metabolism of lipids. However, there is a lack of longitudinal studies to quantify the concentrations of maternal apolipoproteins from preconception to postpartum and their associations with maternal metabolic health and offspring birth outcomes. METHODS: Quantification of apolipoproteins was performed on maternal plasma samples (N = 243 trios) collected at preconception, 26-28 weeks' pregnancy, and three months postpartum in the Singapore PREconception Study of long-Term maternal and child Outco

Maternal Gestational Diabetes Is Associated with High Risk of Childhood Overweight and Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Study in Pre-School Children Aged 2-5 Years.

Background and Objectives: Childhood obesity is a global public health concern with long-term and serious health implications. An important factor for childhood obesity is maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which in turn impacts maternal and offspring long-term health. This study aimed to investigate the associations between maternal GDM and childhood weight status and multiple anthropometric and sociodemographic factors and perinatal outcomes. Materials and Methods: A total of 5348 children aged 2-5 years old and their paired mothers took part in the study. Questionnaires were util

A meta-analysis of epigenome-wide association studies on pregnancy vitamin B12 concentrations and offspring DNA methylation.

Circulating vitamin B12 concentrations during pregnancy are associated with offspring health. Foetal DNA methylation changes could underlie these associations. Within the Pregnancy And Childhood Epigenetics Consortium, we meta-analysed epigenome-wide associations of circulating vitamin B12 concentrations in mothers during pregnancy (n = 2,420) or cord blood (n = 1,029), with cord blood DNA methylation. Maternal and newborn vitamin B12 concentrations were associated with DNA methylation at 109 and 7 CpGs, respectively (False Discovery Rate P-value <0.05). Persistent associations with DNA methyl

Course and outcome of IVF pregnancies and spontaneous conceptions within an IVF setting.

The study determines mortality and morbidity levels during pregnancy and the perinatal period in those conceiving through IVF in the Republic of Ireland in comparison with other parts of the world and a peer infertile group conceiving spontaneously whilst on the IVF clinic books. Six hundred and sixty couples had 187 IVF pregnancies from whom 220 babies were born to 151 deliveries. There were also 78 spontaneous conceptions which produced 78 offspring from 73 deliveries. The majority had trouble free pregnancies. The incidence of all complications was less than has been reported elsewhere. Of

Annual summary of vital statistics--2001.

The number of births, the crude birth rate (14.5 in 2001), and the fertility rate (67.2 in 2001) all declined slightly (by 1% or less) from 2000 to 2001. Fertility rates were highest for Hispanic women (107.4), followed by Native American (70.7), Asian or Pacific Islander (69.4), black (69.3), and non-Hispanic white women (58.0). During the early to mid 1990s, fertility declined for non-Hispanic white, black, and American Indian women. Rates for these population groups have changed relatively little since 1995; however, fertility has increased for Asian or Pacific Islander and Hispanic women.

Maternal asthma during pregnancy and the likelihood of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is the most common chronic disease during pregnancy. Maternal asthma has been associated with a multitude of unwanted pregnancy outcomes, in some studies also with neurodevelopmental disorders. Here we investigated associations between maternal asthma and neurodevelopmental disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied a retrospective population-based cohort of 1 271 439 mother-child pairs from singleton live births in Finland between the years 1996-2018. We used multiple high-cover registers for data collection. Adjusted unconditional Cox regression models were used to inv

Association Between Parental Adverse Childhood Experiences and Offspring's Risk of Suboptimal Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Previous reviews and meta-analysis have not adequately explored the impact of specific parental adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) subtypes on offspring's health. This updated systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between parental ACE subtypes and various offspring health outcomes. A comprehensive search was conducted in electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, WANFANG, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure for studies published in English and Chinese from January 1, 1998, until July 18, 2023. Two independent review

Exposure to Persistent Organic Pollutants and Birth Characteristics: The Upstate KIDS Study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may be associated with obesogenic effects in offspring. Our study is the first to investigate associations between concentrations of POPs from newborn dried blood spots (DBS) and birth characteristics. METHODS: Concentrations of 10 polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ether-47 (PBDE-47), and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) were measured from DBSs collected at birth from 2,065 singleton infants. DBS samples were pooled in groups of five and assayed together to reach limits of de

Reporting postpartum haemorrhage with transfusion: a comparison of NSW birth and hospital data.

AIM: Postpartum haemorrhage rates have been increasing in NSW and internationally, and blood transfusion is required in severe cases. Using routinely collected administrative data provides a convenient method with which to monitor trends in both postpartum haemorrhage and associated transfusion use. In order for this to be feasible however, the reliability of reporting of the conditions needs to be assessed. METHODS: This study used linked data to compare the reporting of postpartum haemorrhage with transfusion as reported in the NSW Admitted Patient Data Collection (hospital data), with the

Maternal propensity for infections and risk of childhood asthma: a registry-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal use of antibiotics during pregnancy has been associated with the development of asthmatic disorders in the offspring. The human microbiome has been suggested to act as an intermediary in this process. To provide clarification on this theory, we studied the temporal relation between maternal use of antibiotics and the risk of childhood asthma. METHODS: According to national registries, during the observation period (1997-2010), 910,301 children were born in Denmark and were included in the analysis. From these registries, data for cases of childhood asthma were obtained ba

Multiple exposures to environmental pollutants and oxidative stress: Is there a sex specific risk of developmental complications for fetuses?

Medically assisted procreation significantly contributes to an increase in twin pregnancies. One of the major factors contributing to more twin births is the use of fertility treatments. Twin pregnancy is not without a risk for fetal organ development and the health outcome of new-borns, children, and adults. Multiple pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of developmental complications, such as perinatal mortality, premature births, and low birth weight. Oxidative stress is involved in pregnancy disorders such as abortion, intrauterine growth retardation, and prenatal mortality. Th

Exposure to breastfeeding and risk of developing multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Early-life factors are reported to modulate the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) among adults. The association between exposure to breastfeeding and the risk of MS is debated. We aimed to disclose whether past exposure to breastfeeding and its duration are associated with the risk of developing MS. METHODS: We used a cohort design linking prospectively collected information on breastfeeding from the Cohort of Norway community-based surveys on health status (CONOR) with the Norwegian MS Registry and the population-based Medical Birth Registry of Norway that includes infor

Intracytoplasmic injection of spermatozoa and spermatogenic cells: its biology and applications in humans and animals.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has become the method of choice to overcome male infertility when all other forms of assisted fertilization have failed. Animals in which ICSI has produced normal offspring include many species. Success rate with normal spermatozoa is well above 50% in the mouse but ICSI success rates in other animals have been low, ranging from 0.3 to 16.5%. Mouse ICSI revealed that spermatozoa that cannot participate in normal fertilization can produce normal offspring by ICSI, provided their nuclei are genomically intact. Human ICSI using infertile spermatozoa has bee

Maternal kidney disease and composite kidney outcomes in the offspring.

Maternal chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, but its relationship with long-term offspring kidney health remains uncertain. This retrospective maternal-child cohort study examined whether maternal CKD or reduced kidney function before or during pregnancy was associated with a composite kidney outcome in offspring. Live births in the Taiwan Mother and Child Health cohort from 2007 to 2017 were followed through 2018. In the primary cohort, maternal kidney disease was defined as claims-based CKD meeting chronicity criteria before or during pregnancy; the ma

The impact of prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter and its components on maternal and neonatal thyroid function and birth weight: a prospective cohort study.

Maternal and child health has garnered considerable attention recently. The effects of prenatal exposure to PM2.5 and its components on thyroid function in both mothers and fetuses, as well as on offspring birth weight, remain unexplored. This study involved 446 mother-infant pairs from a cohort study in Ma'anshan, China, during 2021-2022. Air pollution data were obtained from the Tracking Air Pollution (TAP) project. Thyroid hormone levels (FT3, FT4, and TSH) were measured in maternal blood samples taken at various pregnancy stages and in cord blood. We employed multiple analytical methods to
